Cayuga B & B Fall Trout and Bass fishing derby on Cayuga Lake

Jim, was down to the park late this afternoon, not many big fish on the board. Sounds like it was tough fishing today with the blow. Will try to get down early tomorrow morning and get a picture posted. If not will post a picture of the final board tomorrow night for sure. Yes Mike, please give me the schedule as soon as possible. I will show the schedule to Steve (owner of Bear's bait shop) to see what can be done. Most of Bear's tournaments have been scheduled for the same weekend for many years now. Not sure how willing he would be to adjust, but I am willing to sit down and talk to him. We still are talking about a way to go through and get a second weight in station. Long point state park seems the most likely however, one of the problems is getting the permission because the state always wants their piece of the pie if you know what I mean. Good luck to all of those in the FLT tournament tomorrow. Wayne Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

OK understand, I think SK8man is correct. When I blow up the picture a little closer it looks like the spots on the guilt plate are a little different. Either way I know there's been a lot of big Silvers in the lake this year. Maybe that's a photo of the 12 pound salmon that was caught during the salvation army tournament. suttontroller94, yes it looks like my fish. Why do you ask? I took the fish down to Bear's Bait shop this morning to have the weight certified. I got all of the measurements that I needed to do a fiberglass mount and left the cooler and fish with Steve for his efforts. I only eat fired haddock therefore Steve ended up with some nice salmon fillets. -

Thanks Jim, yes it was quite a 25 minute battle. I did the same thing with the big Laker I caught about 3 weeks ago. I assumed it was another big Laker this time as well, so I put the rod back down in the holder to clear other rods. For about five minutes while I was clearing other rods this fish was just pulling drag and the rod was setting in the holder. Imagine the look on my face when I saw this fish coming to the surface and it was a Salmon. I just about shXX my pants. After missing the fish twice with the net I did get him the third time and by now it was getting pretty dark with no lights on. It will be something I will never forget. Wayne -

Headed out of Myers point for about one hour of fishing before sunset and it was well worth it. Fished from Portland Point to just north of Salmon Creek. On my second pass right in front of the creek I caught this monster Landlocked Salmon on a wire Dipsy using a spin doctor and fly. Again, Iron Duke's trolling fly - "UV wild child" did the damage again. This salmon was weighed and measured at Bear's this morning about 9:30. Fish weighed 14 lbs. 9 oz., 34 1/2 inches long and the largest girth measurement was 16 inches around. I have all the measurements to do a fiberglass mount. Does anyone have a recommendation? Seem to be having a problem up loading the photo. Is there a size limit? Have uploaded from my Go Pro camera before with no issues. Not sure what's going on. Great job today, it pays to just pickup sometimes and try a different area. Also, I will be sending a PM about your Dipsy question from the other post. Just been very busy lately and have not had the time to sit down to write it out. Again Congrats!!! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

Cayuga Lake Report 8/20/17 Launched out of Myers Point at 7:00 AM.. Ran to the middle of the lake and trolled North towards AES. This area has been very good for the last couple of weeks with a mix bag of fish. Plan for the morning was to run riggers in the silver zone and experiment with leader length from the fly to the Spin Doctor using Mag wire Dipsy on a #1 setting 180 to 275 out. Used a number of different color Iron Duke Trolling flies for this test. Ran leader lengths from 12" to as much as 36" from the SD. Landed nine Lakes and four Salmon in five hours of fishing but for some reason I had the dropsies. Dropped three Lakers and one nice Rainbow at the back of the boat. All silvers were caught on UV spoons of different colors. The experiment on leader length was very interesting. With a short leader (12 to 18") it seemed like the fish would come up and try to hit it but would not hook up. I was surprised by this because I didn't think that could happen. The rod tip would suddenly move or jolt but then no one home. Just not sure what was going on. But my guess is that the fly being that close to the SD the fish was very skiddish, not sure. Never hooked a fish in that configuration. I normally run the leader length around 22 to 24". As expected, as I increased the length to that distance I did catch fish. My next leader length zone was 30" to 36". As I increased the distance behind the SD I notices that the fly just seems to lose some of its action as I let it down. The fly just seems to make a bigger circle with no additional action. I did catch fish using a leader length from 20" all the way out to 32". Has anyone else experimented with leader length before? Not really sure if this is consistent from day to day or if that was how it was that day. I do no, I have had days that the fish would not hit a certain length leader and make a small change to the length and you are now hooking fish. Not really sure if this was worth the time and effort but was just curious about this so I wanted to see what would happen. Either way it was a good morning of fishing all the way up to Rocky Dock and it was surprisingly quiet until around noon for a Sunday morning. If you have experimented with the leader length between the SD and fly before I would like to hear your thoughts. Attached are a few photos. Thank you.

Cayuga instructor wanted trolling

Yes, the gambler rigs are very good. During Bear's last tournament fishing for Lakers only I had two gambler rigs out and one SD/fly out. But then there were times they wanted nothing but SD/flies. Take off one gambler rig and add another SD/fly. You also can't go wrong with Iron Duke trolling flies. Glad it worked out today for you. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -

Sk8man is correct. I was out fishing last night for about two hours just south of Myers to just north of T-falls and caught fish both on Dipsy's and riggers. Running Mag Dipsy's using wire and a #1 setting anywhere from 145 - 185 feet of wire out using spin doctors and flies. Also caught fish on spoons running riggers between 55 feet and 75 feet down. Caught fish inside and outside. Inside meaning less than 100 feet of water near shore, outside anywhere from 250 to 400 feet of water. Decent group of silvers near crowbar point. Trolling speed was 2.2 - 2.6 SOG. Sorry don't have a fishhawk X4D yet hope to soon. If you are going to run a lot of dipsy's I would really suggest getting a TD fishhawk. Use this unit to develop your own dive charts for your boat setup. You might be surprised how different it will be compared to the chart that they give you. Remember success is in the details. Hang in there you will get it, hope this helps. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United -
Fisherdude, thank you for the input. Yes I've been trolling now on the finger Lakes for four years. New to the whole trolling thing, but I still have not made it up to Lake Ontario. Almost went this past spring and I'm really itching to go this year for kings. I just have not made the move due to the big lake and the different wind directions. It's really funny in a way, when I first started going out of Myers point, Bear would pick on me because I would not go very far away from Myers. Now I go up and down the lake like it's nothing and don't think twice. It's just a matter of getting comfortable. Thanks again for the input and good luck next time you go out.
