  1. Well I've had enough of the manual downrigger's. I would like to go to electrics next year. My current boat set up is, starting motor in the back connected directly to the motor and a deep cycle battery connected up front to a mini koto trolling motor. The starting motor also powers my fishfinder and both pumps for the boat. From a electrical point of view what do I need to do or how should I change over to electric downrigger's? I believe I understand I will be limited by the alternator in my boat motor as to the amount of current my downrigger's can draw?? I I think I need to total up all of the max current draw of all my electronics stuff and make sure it does not exceed the rating of my alternator?? If I do I will not be able to charge my battery and therefore it will eventually stop running the motor. As you can tell I believe I'm a little fuzzy but I think I'm close. Other things that may be important, motor is a 25hp Yamaha four stroke, boat is a tiller model, and current manual downrigger's are old Riviera's. Don't want anything fancy or fast from a electric downrigger standpoint just want to make it a little easier on my back and arms. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 2. So if you are new to trolling for the Kings it sound like fishing in the afternoon until sunset is the best time. However being a small boat owner (16'), and assuming no afternoon storms would you recommend this? One of my concern is the less boat traffic. Less help if something goes wrong. Would be going out of Oswego hopefully within the next two weeks or so. I wish i knew other people going up so I had a buddy system. Any suggestion or comments appreciated. 3. I live about 10 minutes from Myers and I know of a couple people that had problems with them. Both from a time and cost stand point. However I have heard good things about Johnson boat yard in Ithaca but have never used them before. Hope it works out for you. Was in a similar situation this past spring. Good luck!!!! 6. Final board update !!!! Yes the top two fish were a brown trout at 13-11 and a LLS at 12-12. The biggest Lake Trout was 12-8. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. Attached is the entry form for the Barney Baldwin Memorial fishing derby August 12, 2017. You can sign up at Bear's Baits, located at Myers Park in Lansing New York. I will try to attach a PDF document sometime next week. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  10. My mistake, I was just looking at some things getting ready for tomorrow and that fly is actually the Bruised Alewife. Either way it's one of Iron Duke Trolling Flies that catch fish. [emoji1][emoji14] Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  11. John, that's funny you called that a Bellis Fly. I had forgotten that I grabbed one of those at the Watkins Glen show this past spring. One of my other rigs that caught fish also was that fly behind a large big Al flasher. I was quite surprised they would hit that just behind the big flasher. Plan on fishing this weekend and hopefully the winds don't get too crazy. Hopefully I'll see you, good luck this weekend to Mike and yourself. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. Wanted to send a shout out to Iron Duke Trolling Flies. Been having trouble getting a consistent lake trout bite on spin doctors and fly combos so I gave Mike a call. I purchased some of his flies and he answered some questions for me. Mike was very helpful and willing to answer my questions. Below is a photo of the first lake trout caught using one of his flies. Ended up running two SD/fly rigs for about 2 1/2 hours and went seven for eight. One rig was on a downrigger and the other was off a number one wire Dipsy 190 out. Again, thank you Mike for your help. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. This time of year we are usually fishing out in the middle over deep water. Quite offend I will find large marks on the screen down around 150 feet or deeper. My assumption is these could be good fish suspended in very cold water. Lone wolfs if you would. Who knows they maybe small salmon or something else. Just curious as to what they could be. More then likely they are Lake Trout. Other then that you are correct generally don't fish below 75 - 100 feet. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  14. Everyone, yes Bear has entry forms for the salvation army derby in Lansing July 8 and 9th. Hope to see everyone there. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Stoneam2006, I run 30 pound big game mono on the fingers and the fleas are not a problem. I just replace about 250 feet of mono on my rigger rods with the 30# and then switch over to all wire Dipsey's and you should be ok. Hope that helps. 16. Can you use Dipsey's off of a downrigger? I currently have manual downrigger's therefore cranking them up and down all day from 80 to 100 feet becomes a pain in the butt and would not want to do that all day at 150 to 200 feet. Therefore was thinking about running a dipsey down the additional distance. If I am using a wire dipsey how would the deployment go and how would you connected to the release at the downrigger balls? Any thoughts or suggestions besides buying electric downrigger's. LOL. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. Whoops, sorry about that. New to the whole perch fishing thing. This is just what we used. Did not know it was such a big secret. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. Stoneam2006 I have the same fishfinder on my boat and last year I switched over to the app mapping program on an iPad. I am doing this until I get the money to upgrade to a 7 or 9 inch screen. And it will more than likely be a Garmin unit that is already loaded with the maps. Before I upgrade to the new fish finder, I am saving my money to buy a temperature probe like a fishhawk X4D first. What I have learned over the last four years is you can go without a fish finder but if you know the temperature breakdown below your boat and put your lures in the correct temperature you will catch a lot more fish even if you can't see them on your fishfinder. Just something to think about. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. A friend of mine just took me fishing for perch for the first time and I had a blast. We used something called crappy sliders on 1/8 oz jigs. Was curious about what other artificial baits do you recommend for fish perch on the finger lakes? I really enjoyed the laid back relaxing environment compared to trolling for Trout and Salmon. Great change of pace. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Stoneam, I have used these releases and they work great. In my opinion the best two adjustment release on the market. Like someone said earlier adjust the one for the rod very tight so you can put a really good band in the rod and work with the bottom release for the fish. 21. Agree Stoneam, this site is just unbelievable with the amount of support from very knowledgeable anglers. Sometimes I'm just afraid to ask questions because they may appear to be stupid. I have been trolling now for about four years and believe me when I say this I would not be where I am today without this site. A lot more to learn and look forward to the continued support. 22. Fishstix I have also started running some of Gambler Rigs. Could you please explain a little bit on the rubber band release? I have been experimenting with the large Scotty releases and the Chamberlain releases. Would you just wrap a rubber band around the mainline and then put the rubber band in the release? I know this this sounds like a pretty dumb question but I'm just trying to learn. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  24. A friend of mine had an old tackle box full of flutter spoons that he gave me. Some of the spoons are Suttons, Sammy 08 and Alpena diamonds. What is the correct method and trolling speed (GPS) when using the spoons? I understand the GPS speed is not the best because of currents but I don't have a down speed or temp yet. Is it true that the spoons are generally used on Seth Green Rigs or also called meat rigs? My hope was to use them off riggers and cores but I'm told that you have to troll very very slow. So what is very very slow? Thank you for your time. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. Thank you for all the input, parts have been ordered and should be in sometime tomorrow. Yes it is the main motor on a 16' smoker craft. My back up motor is a Minnkota trolling motor. The motor did start up and appeared to run fine after it cooled down. I am replacing the water pump assembly and the thermostat. Reading up on the engine, it appears that it has a safe shutdown mode if the temperature gets too hot. Apparently it throttles back the engine to keep it from getting to hot and hopefully that is what happened. Appears to have no paint peeling and no other signs at this point. I probably won't really know until I replace the water pump and get it out on the water. Unfortunately, that will be at this weekend's tournament on Cayuga Lake. So hopefully the black cloud will leave and if I do need help on the lake someone will come help me out like I have helped many others in the past. Again thank you very much for your time and good luck fishing next time you are out. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
