Rod, great report, and some beautiful fish indeed! amazingly, you were able to make light of a lousy situation with Canadian custom agents, being such nit pickers your crew and you exercised great restraint to enjoy some sweetness from the bitterly stupid treatment from the representatives of Canada. You are absolutely right about feeling like "Bubba" Good thing Ray wasn't part of the crew the soap mighta flew In all it seems like the male agent was only trying to impress the subordinate female officer and make an ass of himself for her benefit somehow. Gotta love the cheesy cat that ate the canary grin on those agents pusses while they know you can't defend yourself without furthering the incrimination.....been there done that. I hope they are enjoying their sense of false security, being so indignant, and refusing to do the real job of security. Heck with them and feel safer fishing in our own territory I say. I have to tell you I'm not a big fan of rollerguides for the reason they get really expensive to get one with close tolerances for the wire. There is the wear problem in the side plates too and they are tough to replace compared to hardened guides. It's a cruel fact that over time wire will saw through stuff especially with a screaming king on. If you get around to having a couple more rods for dipsy work, try a 10 foot Daiwa heartland dipsy rod and get the Twilly tip. You can run four of those dipsy when ya get good at it, and you can compare the two styles of rods. For the double roller just run straight through, the upper roller I believe is just for guiding the wire onto the reel when under tension because it tries to stand off the bottom roller when reeling in. Good job your on yer way, just be sure to keep the wire tight on the spool and slack out so ya don't kink it up. And watch the rollers on your rods to be sure they don't get side play and allow the wire to pinch in the guide. [ Post made via Android ]

In reference to using one over the other for the pros or cons, there really isn't any, because they are totally different ways of presenting your lures in a trolling set. Think of copper wire as a option to use for the sole purpose of getting another lure down deep, way back behind your riggers and dipsy. Copper wire by its own nature is It's own depth fishing tool. Sinks approximately 20 to 25 feet on its own every 100 feet, at normal trolling speeds but is variant depending on many other factors, lure drag, current, turns etc. Mono has no ability to sink on it's own without the aid of a downrigger, dipsy, or lead weight or the planning ability of a lure. IE. the two are fished entirely different. Mono uses attachment to depth attaining equipment and copper does not....however ...and I will get harassed over this , I have been known to use a dipsy on copper 45 lb test wire to achieve very deep presentations that are close to the boat without peeling off 600 feet. Advantage when combat fishing, so ya don't get yer tackle under some one else's boat...wire is wire, It's just different colored...I got an air horn on my tricycle...and it works. I could say something derogatory, but I'll just keep my money here in the USA instead. After 5 years of crossing the border twice a day with the big truck, I can say that since 911, we (Americans & Canadians) have put up with some really stupid ridiculous, politically correct nonsense from both sides of the border. I'm just glad I never go there anymore. One word wrongly spoken and you are subjected to actions that make you feel like a real criminal for nothing. To bad the exchange isn't better for the US dollar, I'm sure it would really matter about the tourism and trade then.....oh well...run to the end of your chain and bark, ...no sale, not even internet....haaaaa... Finding the Thermocline
skipper19 replied to TyeeTanic's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Ha Ha....That's what is so great about this site something new never saw that thing before ...that gadget,,the fish hawk TD is worth a try for that money. One drop and get the thermocline straight down and have it recorded every 5 feet is much better than the old mercury depththerm.... Like Micky Finn said it's a time intensive cave man style thing compaired to this wonderful gadget...glad I came out from under the rock ...heck one year warranty and 5 year battery life, better than a X4 when the probe gets lost I guess. I don't know about running it on copper and dipsy line that are susceptible to breakage and the big King salmon runs off with it to show all his friends the shiney new bling he just ripped off the hapless fisherman But it will work for a one time check with a weight or on the rigger ball. Of course its not as good as the probe style that has continuous reading at the helm, but a more inexpensive alternative. might be worth a try, for me...when I make my first hundred dollars that the gas tank doesn't get -
Finding the Thermocline
skipper19 replied to TyeeTanic's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Cheapest thing and can estimate depth it went or ya could use a line counter reel is the depththerm. It is a mercury thermometer that is closed in a plastic tube that takes a sample of water after a minute or so and can tell you the temp and depth it went to. Not sure where to find one but it works well. Mark [ Post made via Android ] -
http://www.malinco.com/fishing-stainless-cable.html This is your wire... Malin 7... non coated....30 lb test. Twilly tip is a coil of spring shaped like a funnel...goes on the end of your rod tip in place of the tip eye. Fleas are the microscopic critters that cling on your line and when enough of them get on your line they will lock up in the guides and you will be a mad indian. Wire and Twilly work to cut them off as you reel...do not try to use braid when they bloom out...if you do you will be very sorry. They are coming soon. Bad bad invasive crap. spin doctors making a mess
skipper19 replied to JakeyBaby's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yup, 7.5 beam you will need 5 foot arms that tip up or put cable retrieves on to pull the ball in from the end of the arm. Long stretch and a rough day might make you get a swim ...not good. I personally run a spinny all by itself just to avoid wrap ups...no free slides...cheater...stacked stuff. If you want to run stacked rods off the cable you can use a down and out stacked small adjustable dipsy that is set on # 3 to run wide and out away from your ball rod. In this case you probably will not get tangled with a spinny that is run off one of the outboard riggers. I like to run the dipsy out 90 feet and clip the line in release 30 feet above the ball for this application. It is very deadly on shy fish that come to inspect the closer inside baits. They might fall away from those and when the dipsy down and out comes along it will entice a hit as the fish believes maybe a stragler bait is easy prey. These never get tangled when running stacked, just be patient on the ball drop to the preferred zone so the dipsy can keep a straight track to the outside and not flip over, which can happen if you drop too fast. That will cause a tangle on the dipsy and it may not release. Mark [ Post made via Android ] -
spin doctors making a mess
skipper19 replied to JakeyBaby's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
If you are running four downriggers on a boat less than 8.5 foot beam you are going to have problems with wide swinging flasher and such. You should be able to separate your cables by at least 6 feet to avoid trouble ...6 between the outside and inside riggers cables (2x6)...12...and 6 between the inside riggers... (total 18 feet)... , extending 5 feet back. Fact is I have four riggers on my 8.5 beam and I only run 3 at the most anytime. And only 1 on the inboard will have a spindoctor or flasher and running deeper than all the other sets on it so it is down and behind all the other cables on the outboards. I hope you have the outboards riggers facing at 90 degrees from the center line of your boat for maximum separation and you have 5 foot extension arms. Currents and quick turns will get things together too. Hope this makes sence and helps, but it sounds like first you might separate the cables as much as you can and run the flasher set inboard and deeper than all the other sets. Mark -
Great day on the water Andy Good to see some time on the water away from chores for ya, and with one of the boys and friend. Happy fathers day! Mark

Nice day father and son, way to go Mark -
I'm using 30lb power pro on two rods but they will be of no use when fleas come out. wire is the ticket. The only place I use 30 lb mono on a dipsey is on a down and out stacked off the downrigger cable with a small dipsey. There is not a lot of line out in that situation and the small dipsey is easy to trip when retrieving. It also is less susceptible to flea collection so that is the ONLY case for using the 30 pound ande mono. It holds tighter in the scotty pinch pads I use also so it holds the pull of the dipsey. Use wire, it's really the best when fleas come out and gives the dipsey much better depth. The twilly will help cut fleas off too if they come to the rod. Mark

I'm with ya Shawn ...My dad was my mentor and I only wish he could be with me still and enjoying this great fishery we have today here in Lake O. He would be amazed that this is in our backyard and so easily accessed and protected by our armed forces with the freedom to enjoy! To all the LOU dads..good job!.. being a Dad is a true life job of the highest esteem. Happy Fathers day DAD!...I feel you fish with me and drive that truck with me everyday. 1910-1971 the last 16 years of his life for me were the best I ever had until the last 26 of mine so far when I had the pleasure of being the "torch passer" and experience the "job" of Dad with my two children. That's a very rare thing to have 30 pound power pro braid break that easily. If you could tell more about the snap swivel like what type of ring is on it either welded or is it split ring. #1Always use welded with power pro because it will not abrasion or allow the thin diameter of the line to "sneak" out through the split. #2 try a double improved clinch knot on the ring. power pro is very slick and will pull out on any knot that is not double wrapped around the eye of a hook or ring. you make the double improved clinch the same as the standard clinch except you first double the line back on itself and then pass the doubled line through the ring and tie it carefully the same as a standard clinch. Now you have the double wrap on the ring you need to keep it from slipping. I'm saying this mostly because I believe that if you are using a welded ring snap swivel, that you are probably experiencing the palomar slipping out and not breaking. Hope this helps, I feel your pain on tackle loss. I have never had power pro fail to have very strong integrity and a lot of my reels are still spooled from 5 years with the same line. However I do reverse my reels each year. Mark
