Point Breeze 6/17 report
skipper19 replied to skipper19's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I can almost picture you two.. "cut that $#!$ and lets go fishin!" lol. Nice report good to see some kings headed eastward! Holy crap!...It's like you were there ..I'm just glad it was his decision and not mine. Not to mention I learned the value of a good working emergency brake on a steep ramp and a standard tranny when I loaded the boat. Almost a picture moment...but mostly bunghole tightening ..WHEW! 3 ROD / PERSON...............PASSED IN BOTH HOUSES
skipper19 replied to lyteline's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Gay marriage...and three rods...this doesn't sound like we have a good plan on the governors desk. New rule for fishing: an angler may use up to three rods ....while trolling with two rods and looking for a third....this new ruling when angler finds the third rod will be categorized as the manage a trois trolling...uhhhhh....spread. DOH!... [ Post made via Android ] -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):6/17 Time on Water: 9:30 am - 2:00 pm Weather/Temp: niiiice... Wind Speed/Direction: none Waves: flat calm Surface Temp: 64 ish Location: east to glass house LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 8 Total Boated: 5 Species Breakdown: kings & lakers Hot Lure: NK28 in 42 second and mountain dew s/d a-tom-ik frenchy fly Trolling Speed: 2.4 to 2.6 Down Speed: same as boat (water speed pass ball unknown) Boat Depth: 140 - 160 productive....300 just looking Lure Depth: 55 rigger and 180 diver hottest ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Got a late start due to some hitch issues. My truck in the shop and still working on it when friend Art calls me and wants to try the big lake for the first time. Well he says he can bring his truck and haul the boat, and so here it comes in the driveway....a dump truck...with a combo pintle and receiver hitch. He had a hitch with three different sizes, but when we tried to flip it to the 2 inch size there was some clearance issues with the pintle hook. So a little modification with the hot wrench (cutting torch) we slid a 1/8 inch sliver off the top of the hook and we are in business. Now to fishing...we set up in 200 feet just east of port with a simple 2 rigger and 2 diver set. Riggers with spoons and divers with pro troll and spinny pulling A-Tom-ik flies. Riggers at 55 and 65 ft, braid divers on 2.5 settings out 150 and 180. Trolled south east into 120 fow and started marking fish. Zigged between 140 out to 160 to the glass house where we found the kings in a nice surface break loaded with debris. Hot spoon for the kings was the 42 second on the 55 rigger. Lakers were scattered along the way, they wanted the spinney with the frenchy fly. The bite was short only about the first 2 hours was good for us but if we could have started earlier in the day I'm sure it would have been much better. Lots of bait hanging in the 60 to 90 foot depths. Checked out the 300 foot depths and was not a good screen there yet. Ended up with 4 in the boat one Laker lost at the back one skipper put back and a couple good grabs but no hookup. Art wanted to try a lake trout on the grill so we kept a 10 lber and the three kings ranging from 10 lbs to 14. No big screamers , but some good fighters and airials from kings was different. Art was happy, and wants to do it again,...another one hooked Mark upload gif ==================== [ Post made via Android ]

Would be nice not to see so many "undersize fish" in the back of a pickup truck....just a thought [ Post made via Android ] -
Great report Rick. There was some tough fishing out there for sure and the fish were really rev'd up and just trying to come unbuttoned on Sunday as we fished out of Wilson west also. Got set up late and fished in the 225 to 330 fow 7 miles from the red can and had 61 degrees on the surface but a very bleak screen. Put 3 hours in that area and managed only 1 decent steelhead and a couple undersize coho. Then a 25 ft GIANT TREE half submerged came and grabbed into the rigger cables and caused some crap for a bit. Anyway all the lines were back in the boat and I wasn't in the mood for fishing for babies and went back in at 1 pm. Appears that over 13000 lbs of fish are still missing from that water over there Mark [ Post made via Android ]

Fish have a protective slime, but after they are dead it can have bacteria form from decomposing effects. A bullhead or catfish can leave a nasty wound with the dorsal and pectoral fin bones. My uncle once stepped on a bullhead in the bottom of the boat at night and the bone went thru his boot and into the bottom of his foot. It swelled up bad and he could hardly walk on it but never went and got treatment for it. It eventually went back down but the wound itself would not heal for a long time. Hard to say what kind of bacteria would be on a dead fish but some form of bad bacteria is likely. The lab should be able to identify it. Hope he gets better soon. I can feel your anxiety, when a fun day turns into something scary. Mark [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Interesting, FX and FISHINMAN saw and reported a rogue 4 foot wave on the day they were out at point breeze but it was a different day and probably was a bow wake from a freighter. The fact that all those monitors show the same short period swell on two different lakes points to something that happened wide spread. Thanks Tom, very intresting thought! Making the most of a two rod spread??
skipper19 replied to MarkNY's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I like to use a free slider when targeting a steely in the top water columns. Yes the free slider is much easier to deploy, no doubt. When I fix a cheater, alone I like to keep it in the "MUP" form in order to target kings in every specific zone. The method I use by hitching the rubber band to the cable gives me a quick release when the band snaps. Then if a fish hits the ball release, the band snaps and the cheater slides down to the main leader, not requiring the rod tip to slide the band down on the retrieve when the fish is at the back of the boat. The cheater will already be behind the fish and out of the way of netting. Alone with one hand on rod and a 25 lb or bigger salmon, and net in the other dragging in the water aiming to get said big salmon in the bag....ya don't want anything extra in the way or have to unrig a cheater that didn't slide all the way down and flailing around by the net, in 3 to 5 footers. Very very Sharp hooks and tight drag and rod bent, and very quick refex on the strike is imperative. [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -

Time and space continuum....peculiar irregularities, particularly those of which are variables of circumstances such as earthquakes changing the length of day....and...uhhhhh ...OUCH! ...my head hurts...why in the heck is this still going? I thought I explained this all a long time ago. Uh oh ....my wheels are turning. The speedometer reads fifty eight miles per hour velocity, but I am not moving. Now what's up with that. Does that mean I'm reading the speed of the vehicle or the revolution of the wheels, and the ground is not moving but the surface of the earth is spinning and moving me into the future towards a new day. Have I gone anywhere? Or am I just spinning my wheels.......hmmm.... [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

The fly body is a thinner design and lends to the effectiveness in clear water. A little more shimmer and the cone helps that. It has a noise effect that sounds like a school of bait and disrupts flow of water around the fly to give it that extra wiggle. Just wish the body was more durable and sometimes the plastic eye breaks off when a thrashing fish hits the deck. Still a good fly either behind a flasher ,spiney or by its self.
