The up side to the cutback on stocking a sustaining species in other lakes will more likely focus THAT unused expenditure to Lake O. The benefits of salmon stocking in Lake O are apparent in that they control populations of forage and return a great deal more revenue to the state. I would hope that more funding for continuation of pen rearing operations would come from other cutbacks. Those guys from the hatchery drive the trucks ...two of them, all the way from Altmar and spend many hours stocking the pens, as well as hundreds of pounds of feed to at least four or five ports along the south shore. The salmon are short lived by nature, and are under extreme pressure in all the tribs by sportfishing... unlike the lake trout. In my opinion, I don't think there would be a cutback on salmon and trout for Lake O, but rather a better focus on a popular fishery that still needs human intervention on stocking. Concerning the choice of the .308 caliber, I was referencing the all purpose capability one will have in that caliber. Lets face it...any projectile coming out of the barrel over 3000 fps is gonna kill at long range. My experience with my Savage model 12 in 22-250 is that the pelt gets way too much damage under 200 yards using any form projectile. The match grade bullets have a great ballistic coefficient that carries as much accuracy down range as any caliber but the beginning starts with the shooter at the range. As stated earlier if you want to just kill something and not worry about the pelt being worth anything, you can carry your 12 guage and kill very effective at the 22 WMR RANGE of 110 yards. My point was directed to those who have a good shooting deer rifle, can handload, or know someone competant who can that can work up a load at the range...it can double as a varmint killer without the investment of a new gun and who want a pelt to sell. The fmj placed in the thorax of a varmint at short or long range is gonna take him down no matter if it is 50 yards or 500 yards and there is still a pelt left to sell. Now for those who want to buy a new varmint toy ...panther arms clambered in the 6.5 creedmoor, topped with a very nice mil dot tactical glass. Mark [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Notice the big guy next to Hank. The one with the shirt eating grin. It's the reason Hank is whispering to Bob, "ya know, I think I feel sumpin' heavy on my foot". Yup, there's my battery sittin right on his toe. Oops Mark [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

If you are a handloader, and you have a favorite 30 cal. Deer rifle that shoots like a laser, consider some of the match grade .308 full metal jacket projectiles for long range varmints that you want the fur from. No expansion means ya gotta make a good hit, and if you do there will be a clean kill and a clean pelt with only a pencil hole in the skin. I have used my 30-06 with 168 grain match fmj boattails and collected fox and coyote at crazy range, topped with the 3 to 9... 50 mm scope that I hunt deer with. Mark [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Setting up copper - what lengths for Bar/Olcott?
skipper19 replied to ReelPower's topic in Tackle and Techniques
You might consider the third rod to run down the shute. In this case the other two rods run off your boards and the shute rod could be a 450 in 45 lb or a 600 in 30 lb, if that would fit the 55 reel. In the shute position you can run the copper out any distance you want and not have to worry about a release to hold it.30 lb copper will troll about 2 feet higher than 45 for each 100 feet out. Depending on lure being pulled, 600 ft 30 lb will get you over 100 feet down up to 120 ft max. It leaves you a final presentation behind the other two copper on the boards. However a fast pickup reel would be a good idea for 600 ft of copper Mark [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
4 cyl car?
skipper19 replied to poverty stricken II's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
WOW! That puts a damper on discretionary spending like buying fishing goodies and going on a nice trip fishing...yuk. to listen to the economists talk ..you would never know you had to change your American life style. Wish I could help in the little car dept....maybe it would be cost effective to actually consider a new one when maybe you could save half or better on the fuel cost.....750 dollars a month in fuel savings could pay for a new car with warranty and insurance and still have money left over. But isn't this the plan to ignore the cost at the pump and coerce the public into buying fuel efficient "little" cars and ride the bus? Like Europeans do? American way of life almost history. A few years ago, I was fishing along edgemere with my son and we watched with regularity the perch come up to the surface and mouth the air and swim in circles on their backs. Not just a few but hundreds at a time all at once. Then that would submerge and not be seen for a while and it would happen again over and over. Puzzling, but we figured it was a lack of oxygen to support the huge population of fish spawning there, perch, walleye, carp, all seem to converge in that pond in spring. Shallow water, thick ice, loss of sunlight contribute to plant dieoff. Those ponds are relatively stagnant during winter hard freeze. There are pockets of water that move in spring that has little oxygen and somtimes the large fish population gets into them. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

I just bought some fireline fused original at bass pro and it does have properties very similar to wire. If you bend it, it stays bent just like wire, but doesn't piggy tail like wire. It feels very slick and seems to have the qualities that repel spiney water fleas, just as you have said. I will have it on two dipsy rods this summer and will give it a real time test and report. The fireline seems a little bigger diameter than the power pro, but power pro is more like multifiliment thread that would and does collect fleas. The fireline is more mono filament style of braid, and is very slick. Thanks for the tip GT! Mark [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
