The surface temperature this season has been tough on the fish no matter what size they are. I have had them come up from 100 fow cold water and then into 75 degree water at the upper water column. The shock is too much for them if they aren't brought in quickly. If at all possible if the fish is not a bleeder and you have access to a recirculating live well or a small cooler, try placing the fish in the live well with a fresh pail of water from the lake and add some ice cubes if you can spare them to cool the water a bit. Keep the fish upright and try to move him forward around the water in the live well. I have a 22 gal. round live well built in the transom of my boat and this has saved many fish that were expended beyond a safe release off the side of the boat. Most of all, if it is a little guy, just get him to the boat quickly and try to get him back in as quick as possible. You will have the occasional floater but sometimes it happens. Mark

Should be around during that time if work plans come together. I live near the Oak, work in the whole country. Gotta catch the tail end of the LOC hopefully with my son and daughter onboard. Usually on CH 10 Aquasport center console, blue and white with T-top. Catch a @ the North after the fishing sometimes. Mark

OK, thanks Rich, for the heads up on the new Scotty holders. I would like to see if there is some improvement in the Vectors if someone can verify the design change, that would be great. Mark

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):7/19 Time on Water:7:00 - 12:00 Weather/Temp:cloudy early, lite rain, then sunny midday Wind Speed/Direction:west/ nw Waves: 2-3 Surface Temp:75.5 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 8 Total Boated:2 Species Breakdown:steelhead and king Hot Lure: protroll/ a-tom-ic bloody death fly/ and mountain dew spin dr/a-tom-ic mirage tournament fly Trolling Speed:2.3 to 2.8 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 260-300 Lure Depth: 95- 110 ==================== Went solo today. Ran straight out to 170 FOW in front of port then trolled east and moved into 150 FOW. Moved along for 2 hours playing chicken with the packs of sail boats going the opposite direction. Couldn't move a rod. Tried spoons, sliders and different paddle fly combos off the riggers and nada. Well after what looked like a good screen for part of the ride and no fish I decide to try a different area but the west troll was a little rough and I wnted to make the best of the morning time. I picked up everything and ran west to set up in front of Johnsons in 170 FOW. Bloody Death went down and immediately went off but nobody home. back down and the other side gets the mountain dew spiny and mirage fly. Both combos were taking hits as I moved into deeper water 250 on out to 300 and moving northeast again. Trouble was the fish were hitting short and after several knockoffs and a lost fish I was wondering if maybe I was a little fast so I slowed down to 2.3 and started getting hooked up better. Finally ended up getting a 5 lb steelhead and then a 16 lb king in the last hour near 300 FOW. Both went on ice because the cold water was down over 100 feet and there was a large column of warm water coming up and I could not get them to revive. Mark ====================

Nice fishin Father and Son ...That is quality time that can't be beat. Can't wait for my son to be able to come back and fish with me in the fall LOC. Mark -
Stranded wire is the way to go. 7 strand or the newer introduction of 19 strand which is rounder and more flexible. Single strand is not a great wire due to it's kinky attitude. Most every one uses 7 strand, and although I don't use wire for running my dipsys I have seen the effect of the mutistrand and it is very good in respect to depth and flea reduction. No stretch and easier to trip the dipsy for retrieval. You will have some issues with guide wear unless you use a twilly tip on your rod to give the wire a buffer as it comes and goes off the tip. The only reason I haven't gotten into the wire setups is I have gotten used to running 30lb mono dipseys size 0 as "down and out" setups off the outboard down riggers which gives me the depth I'm targeting and a closer spread to the rigger sets. As time and cash allows (bigger reels, longer rods, wire and twilly), I will dedicate a couple more rods to just wire dipseys. Mark

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):7/13 Time on Water:7:30 am to 1:30 pm Weather/Temp:sauna Wind Speed/Direction:2-3 mph south then north then east Waves: ripple Surface Temp: 74.8 Location:front of port to glass house LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 6 Total Boated: 3 Species Breakdown:coho, king, steelhead Hot Lure: Dreamweaver gold cup chicken wing for all the fish Trolling Speed: 2.5- 2.7 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 120- 220 Lure Depth: 110, 90, 75, 68. ==================== Set up in 200 fow with friend Butch straight in front of port. Two riggers with paddles and flies, a 400ft copper spiny and fly, and the chicken wing spoon on the other rigger. Well the flies were dead today except for one knock off and the chicken wing took all the other hits. Fleas were not so bad but the seaweed was in full force. More salad for Tom FISHINMAN ....Trolled into 120 feet in front of glass house and went back west to previous waypoints to try and connect back up with the action there again. Well the west troll produced nothing and neither did the steady pick area just a couple hours ago. A trawler was operating just north of us and that is something never seen before by me. I think it ruined the fishing there but I wasn't bothered by that as much as the thing just being there. Mark ====================

These pics are from my cell phone, zoomed up 3X. not very clear, but what I saw was clear enough. I was out today straight in front of port at the Oak, when out in about 350fow a big boat appears and looks like a tug. Upon closer examination it has davit arms and outriggers. Then I see the boat maneuvering in circles and what do I see but a trawl net being hoisted aboard. I wonder what it was doing there. I figure since commercial fishing for trout and salmon is illegal, then it might be a research vessel. BUT not, it is a bottom scouring trawl for smelt. I wasn't aware that this was something going on in US waters. Either this one was lost or I guess it's ok somehow to ruin the fishing in our lake. Here's what was happening today. Set up in 220 fow and had a steady pick of the fish until 10:00 AM. East troll from about straight out from port to in front of the glass house. Came back to in front of the port again near the 220FOW and here is this trawler doing it's thing. There were two other boats, a charter and a smaller vessel than mine and this trawler was moving in a rather obvious course to try to intimidate this small boat. Notice my photo where the two are in close proximity of each other. This is not necessary when there is so much water out there and why is it there in the first place. Any way, the fish in the area where we were doing so well was void of marks on the screen after this thing came in, and the next two hours were fishless as well. I know there is a huge market for smelt in Japan but are we suppose to sit back and let this happen to our fishery? I would have gone in behind this trawler and checked for by catch of any kind just to see if was floating around out there.....if I thought it was safe. These deep water nets are scouring the bottom of the lake. What is that doing to the ecology of the lake and what are those heavy skegs stirring up down there dragging and plowing furrows in the lake bottom. Any body else ever see this on the south shore? Do we want this? I for one think that the fishing this day turned off and dried up on the screen because of this trawler dragging a net around. Wonder how many trout and salmon are being wasted as bycatch. Mark

Great job guys and gals Shawn, I know how it is with the ladies having issues with the fish laying on the surface before taking off. Mine just about borders on being a member of that society......you know the ones who condemn hunting and fishing and post up pictures of a dog with hooks in it's lips all while eating meat . ..... Oh, and if I keep a fish, then starts the twenty questions, like, "how long will it take to die" ....."don't you think it's like us drowning when they are out of the water....how do they breathe"....there's never really a good answer, so she doesn't go anymore ..darnit, I needed another two rods in the water . Tom don't feel bad about the fish shaking off, at least ya got your lure back. Oh that salad is great, ask the Chinese. Now all ya need is a cormorant and you can have Peking duck for dinner. By the way if you guys get a big king that has a crazy bich fly and mountain dew s/d and 20 feet of flouro....Please return it to me....that fish busted off my 400 copper and is running around out there showing all his friends the $17 worth of bling he took off me Mark

Hopefully and by the pictures, it looks like it is only surface rust. #1 take a small hammer and go along and tap the frame and tongue and watch for large flakes falling off. Also when doing this listen to the sound the hammer makes as it taps the steel. It should still have a ring to it. If it is dull and dead sounding for a long portion anywhere it is a sign of rust gone further than surface and probably inside the frame rails. #2 Use a tool like a screw driver or a knife to scribe on the frame in different places as well and see that shiny metal is just a "scratch" away. Inspect the welds and make sure they are solid looking and not full of pin holes where water can leak into the frame tubes. The frame is the most important part of the trailer, it is the backbone of the trailer and will determine if you should keep looking for other faults. Like the foundation under a house, the frame of the trailer is the first place to go to look for problems and if there is, keep walking. #3 Axles and their fastening hardware, although replaceable if necessary, they can be expensive and a certain amount of grunt work to replace. However in some cases if there are other underlying problems such as hub and bearing assemblies you might be better off in just replacing the axles as an assembly with new springs and hangers as well. So check all those items and determine if the hardware is good and maybe the axles are fine if all you need do is change a few hangers if they are worn and have play in them. Don't be afraid to take a hold of the wheels and the spring and give them a good shaking, or even a bar to put some leverage on shackles to check for looseness. #4 As mentioned above by John, everything else is just a given to replace such as the lighting, wiring and tires, hitch , winch etc.. The frame can be scraped or sand blasted and in some case if the rust is just light surface you could paint the metal with rust remover or even vinegar will remove some rust. Just be sure to paint it and make sure the hitch is solid with good mounting hardware, after all you don't want it to come off the tow vehicle, and then everything else might just be the least important in that event. Be sure to look at those hubs and bearings for any play and they dont make any grinding sounds or feel "catchy" any where when turning the wheels. I would clean and repack them with good marine grade bearing grease to be sure there would not be any problem later anyway. Hope this helps add a little to your inspection, if you know someone who does inspections on trailers, that person may be of some physical help in your determination of the structural and safety integrity of the trailer first hand. West side launch on Archibald road has better launch docks. The guide posts are at the end of the docks where they don't interfere with launching and picking up. The docks on the East side have the posts on the sides of the docks and they can cause some trouble with wide beam boats as they are in the way. They can be a real problem when there is wind blowing from the south or north. Those posts are unprotected and can damage stuff if you make a miscue on approach. That is the only disadvantage other than limited parking there. Both are free so far and have restrooms, the ramps are good and the walk to the parking lot is a little farther on the west side. Mark
