Caps on Bert's rod holders
skipper19 replied to bassman69767's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
X3 electrical tape, nice and neat, lasts for years, looks natural with black, or for a little bling match your hull color, blue, red, or whatever! Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Borrow someone's hand held. Check it with that. There are few on the vhf that actually get the energy to respond...lately. or use a scanner programmed to your transmitted channel. It might ACTUALLY be working. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Yeah, I think the best of brightness eats battery power, but not an issue if you have a mobile charger or an inverter to use the 110 v charger. What is the navigation platform you use? Can you drop way points on the screen, and does it follow you and show your position centered all the time? Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

There are some...very few...walleye. a few invariably get caught up at the dam each year, but very rare. So they are around I'll say. I have on occasion come across a couple boats that anchor off the breakwall at night, and I can't tell you they do well, but they are fishing walleye, bass. If you do that, be sure to keep a light on while anchored or drifting. You could get run over by the salmon boats coming in late. Twice I've been approaching the breakwall channel and nearly hit boats that are sitting totally dark...not cool. But yes try it if all else fails, it's still fishing, and as long as you plan to be there, why not! To the east side there is some hard bottom rocky shallows that may be of intrest. Look at a chart to see some of those areas. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Brian is right there, but a boat of up to 27 feet can be powered with a big single. If you see a boat powered by the old Yamaha OX66, from 2001 up, those are good 2 strokes and go up to 250 hp. Yamaha would like to see those old motors go away because it's hard to market out their new stuff when there are still some of these old "perfect" motors around, lasting many many years. Stay away from the HPDI motors that they had out to replace the OX66 though. I have a 225 OX and it pushes my 24 foot Aquasport center console just fine. 45 mph trimmed out, and the motor is not fussy about oil. I use a synthetic blend from cabela's that is about 15 dollars a gallon. Pour it in the remote tank and it measures it out for proper ratio. This motor has been good to me for 8 years, and never been to a dealer or shop. Minor maintenance things that are easy for the backyard shade tree mechanic, makes these old motors a great power unit for a fishing boat. Of course you might need a kicker to troll, as it would be way more economical and less maintenance. A four stroke kicker works well and no fuss with oil. Just things to consider when buying a used outboard, look around for good repo boats. That's how I got mine. Very low hours, like new, fully equipped tournament boat, and 1/3 cost of new. The new boat I was looking at was a foot less and cost twice as much, and I would have had to equip the new boat with all electronic, and downriggers, and the kicker motor. This boat even came with a set of outriggers. All totaled would have cost new more than 80,000. Be mindful that most guys buy a new boat and want something different in a couple years. Maybe too small, maybe it has some inconvenience, so if you get the "right one"..you may have it for 20 or 30 years, and then the new boat is a good investment if taken care of carefully.Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

There is a lot of choices out there. 25000 will not buy you a brand new boat with trailer, but if you have that cash to spare for down payment you could get a brand new boat with low monthly payments, be covered by industry standard warranty of at least 5 years or more. Some 10 years!..outboard is easy in all aspects of a boat that size. I would go to the boat shows that come in the winter months. Look at them, step aboard. Imagine the fishing layout. You could also subscribe to a few magazines that give real time reviews of boats for fishing. One is Salt Water Sportsman, I get that one, and every month there are more than a few boats tested with pricing. Like some have already mentioned there is way more than just a boat, motor, and trailer to consider that can add up to 5 to 10 grand, specific to fishing Lake O. I can tell you that hull design is everything on Lake Ontario. I lean toward heavy, therefore fiberglass, deep V with reverse chines. Best of both worlds in rough water, at speed, or at 2.5 mph. High forward freeboard, lowered cockpit aft. Trailer is a consideration too. In my case, I launch, load solo, and a bunk is easy. Rollers are ok, but you can't unhook the boat until it's in the water. The bunks keep the boat on the trailer down the ramp. Same going on the trailer. Power load to the forward stantion and it stays, pull it out. No wading, or walking the plank. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Does it have a shift interrupt switch check to make sure if it does, wiring is not loose. But, turn the prop in neutral engine off..listen, feel for any skip or catch indicating a gear tooth, and like suggestions above, sample the gear lube for metal particles. Sounds like a gear case problem maybe. Engine idles ok? Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

No doubt he was probably jealous of you, liked your dinner partner. Been exposed to that once... very unusual feeling. I got all the attention while my girlfriend got totally ignored and the tone of voice change! I was starting to get physically ill...and he thought something was wrong with my meal! Never ate there again. Shhheeesh!Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Exactly right Les! I don't do the SWR, but do the SCR...same principle different metal in the wire. SCR = Stealth Copper Rig...100 foot copper on the rigger ball. Last outing I ran 3 riggers solo, 2 with spoons, center and starboard, SCR port side 20 feet higher, big spin doctor and twinkie meat rig. The SCR was doing so well, I decided to change the starboard rigger spoon to another SCR 100 foot meat rig. Varied the depth of the two from time to time. If the two ran together within 10 feet depth difference, the bite slowed, or even stopped on those SCR's and then the single spoon running center 20 feet off the ball became the target for a couple bites. So what you are saying about many attractive programs run too close is more detracting in that it spooks wary fish is valid in this observation. Also there were more than a few boats trolling that particular spot in 580 fow, so I believe the extra activities those other anglers were presenting were a factor in the Stealth Copper Rig being productive with just one running that plane of water.Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Yeah, I think the the Seal 8 from BAK in Buffalo might be a brighter screen for outdoor use and is a rugged unit, but think it is only an 8 inch. Not sure if it comes with a larger screen yet. It's very new to the market. Haven't seen much online about it.Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Thanks Nick for the video and update! Great help with deciding on the different Simrads. Got me second guessing the extra cash for the NSS EVO. I tried the tablet we have, an Acer A 500, and it is too dim in sunlight with the navionics HD app. I need to find one more visible, but at least 10 or 12 inch screen. The MiFi works great with it though, and like you demonstrated, it's handy for any Internet chore. I need one to be a little more robust, since it's on a center console with a T top. The only real plus to the Evo is the screen size and the brightness. Screen size is covered in the tablet as your setup works. Just would need more visibility, especially when it is mounted on the console in bright conditions and a white interior. Mark Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Moving a wide beam boat around near lakes isn't going to attract much attention, it's common sights. You're not for hire. No DOT and the only real possibility of the question would be DEC officer or marine sherif attachment at a launch facility. Still not likely but, keep your registration up to date, and your lights, tires, etc in good working order. Avoid getting pulled over for those visual things that create a reason. Drive safe, avoid accidents at all costs. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app

If you're close enough, yell over to him and ask him if he wants you to net his fish for him...I do it all the time. Etiquette covered, I'm being nice. Usually the other side has that goofy ...huh?...look. sometimes etiquette goes overboard and I get the, I'm number 1 wave...I'm still courteous and give them back th OK sign. 3 fingers standing for A double S and a hole. Keep fishing and turn hard right or left to deeper water drop the balls and dial up the speed, maybe the U turn will complete before the treasure gathering.. Oak/sandy
skipper19 replied to Pa223's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
This was west of the Oak. Current was a mess, first tangle of the riggers this year. Temps were all over at 80 down over 150 to 250. One minute it's 46 next it's 60 then something in between. Lot of bait but fishing there sucked. Picked up and went 30 to 31 lines 580 fow immediately hooked a double and went 1 for 5 in a couple hours solo. Most bites came 90 to 120 down. Smaller kings, I'm guessing, since I had a case of dropsy on the meat rigs. One spoon bite. Lake is transitioning again after that last big turnover and the big blow last week. Just have to feel it out from day to day. It's gonna change. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
