Pike Trip to Canada (need help)
skipper19 replied to Waylander The Green's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
http://www.lodge-at-parent-lake.com/ this really isn't quite what you are looking for, but I have been here twice, and there are tons of huge northerns and some decent walleye in Parent Lake (check the site for the picture gallery). Not a fly in unless you want to land in Val d'Or and then the lodge owner will pick you up. It's in Quebec, about 500 miles drive from western NY, but all nice hard road to the lodge. Nice cabins and boat/motor rental. 16 ft fiberglass with 25hp mercs. No meal plans but nearby Senneterre has a good diner (Restaurant du Parc ) or english, the park restaurant. There are also a couple good grocery stores. The cabins have all you need for cooking and sleeping, just bring pillows and bedding and towels. I have done this trip in the past with my son and paid for both of us for a week including gas and travel and cabin, boat rental and all dinners and extras including licenses at a cost of less than 1400 US for both of us. Wayne and Peggy Werner are excellent hosts and know the area well. They are in Texas for the winter and at the lodge in the summer. Check it out, it's not as expensive as a fly in with a meal plan just in case you want to save some $. Mark -

Just as we cleared the east jetty we encountered Capt Carl with a hookup at the breakwall. We watched as he netted a nice king for his clients. Chris was first on a release off the downriggers and brought in a nice Coho salmon taken on a watermelon j-plug #4 in 23 fow 15 feet down on a 100 ft lead. We trolled until about 10:30 without too much happening so we picked up and ran offshore to the waypoints from two days ago for some steelheads. We changed lures to dipsey flasher flies and spoons off the downriggers. Dipsy divers on braid out 290 and 270 feet were firing with steelhead. One rip and a miss then two fish to the boat. One 8.5 lbs the other undersized and returned. The bite only lasted the typical 1 hour window and we trolled for hours without anymore action so we were weary of the rollers coming from the NE and ran back tot he 20 fow at the wall again just before dark. We were greeted by a screen lit up with bait and hooks all over the front of the wall and we were able to grab a couple more kings before the darkness set in. At one point we had all the lines out of the water for hits and fish coming to the boat. It was short lived as the daylight faded and the fish were not hitting any more. One thing we noticed was the length of the lead off the ball made a big difference in the number of hits. The screen showed several fish streaking to the ball but we originally had long leads of 100 feet in the 20 foot depths and were not getting many hits. We shortened up to 30 foot leads and immediately began getting hits and hookups mostly on j-plugs trolled 2.4 to 2.5 mph. Mark ====================

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9/23-24 Time on Water:9:00am-3pm on 23rd 7:00am - 5pm 24th Weather/Temp:warm Wind Speed/Direction:sw 10mph 23rd/ ne 8mph 24th then calm afternoon Waves: 1-2 ft 23rd/bumpy morning calm afternoon 24th Surface Temp: 66-68 Location:Point Breeze LAT/LONG (): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 4 Total Boated:4 Species Breakdown:2 kings 2 steelhead Hot Lure: j-plug black and purple and glow green/ Protroll flasher and jitter fly Trolling Speed:2.4- 2.8 gps Down Speed: wishlist Boat Depth: 10 ft- 550ft Lure Depth: 3ft - 100 ft ================= Got to go out a couple times with my son and daughter for a little late salmon action. What we found were what I described as dead salmon swimming . We started Wednesday in 65 fow and moved out to 85 fow as we trolled from the pumphouse back towards port and picked up a big ole dark king in 75 fow with a black and purple ladderback j-plug #4 down 65 ft. weighed 22 lbs on my hand scale. Chris did the honor of reeling it in and Amanda netted it like a trooper. We stayed on the inside waters and trolled for a few more hours to no avail so we only took the one fish that day. We ran a five rod spread with mostly j-plugs and swapped out a couple of spoon patterns and spin docs and flies with no hits. Thursday we got out there a little earlier and set up in the river and trolled out the breakwall to just in front of the port and picked up another big dark king that was really not too good looking but Amanda was happy with it just the same. This fish came from 40 fow and on the green glow #4 j-plug down 30 ft. The day became brighter and so we picked up at 11:00am and ran to the 29.5 north lines and set up in 525 fow for some steelhead. We trolled all the way to 32 north and nothing for a couple of hours. So we turned west where I had some waypoints a couple weeks ago that were producing and sure enough there were still fish out there. Nothing too fantastic for action but at least there was some more than we were having with the dying salmon. Two steelhead came to the net with one being 8.5 lbs and the other a little 4 lber. The afternoon was really nice out there and the water was calm so if nothing else we had a nice boat ride. The steelies were taken on protroll e-chip flasher and Tatiana Mirage jitter fly and a green ladderback Pro king spoon. The fly was on a braid line dipsy with big ring out 240 on a 2.5 setting. The pro king was on the rigger down 75. Will post again if I get out this weekend. Mark ===============

Good job Ray! thanks for the report, will be out there a few times this week. Son and Daughter coming to reel fish too . Last weekend went out there in 29 to 32 lines and had a great time with steel and kings. Sent Chers friend Lois home with a bucket full of fillets. Mark -
You're welcome Pat! (in case any thing I put on here was useful) The learning curve has been very steep in deed for me. What with learning about fishing buffy style and using blowup dolls for extra rod holders from Ray to learning how not to troll copper with dipseys from Cap'n Carl, I have never been so productive in catching Gobies and zebra mussels in my entire fishing life. Now I have my freezer full of the makins for Adirondack Clam Chowder and I have Musky to thank for that ...I can't wait to get back out there and learn how to charge up my glow j plugs....Cripes I tried it once before I learned how off this site and I melted down my J-plug arsenal ...(note to self, never use 300,000 candle power spotlight to charge my bling). J-plugs are plastic, not good. needless to say I have a lot to learn here about how to find fish, since my kid with the snorkel and goggles who used to ride on my bow jumped ship (hope the prop missed him) and now I sure miss his sqeaky voice saying FISH! FISH! and so on. Sometimes I think I can hear him in the distance (following me around) on a boat named Pegasus. I know hw must be there otherwise that boat wouldn't have so many fish on board all the time. Man I sure can't wait to get back out there. Oh wait I am going....this week, all week...Man I sure hope there are some gobies runnin the Oak right now...mmmm. well gotta go charge my bling for night fishin so people can see me while I drift fish without runnin lights....I'll report later...Yipeee a week off. Yall have fun openin yer junk mail I just delivered in Rochester....I see a lot of it goin to the Elmira area... look fer yer favorite mags and catalougues Ray..(Victoria secret, Blowup toys are us ETC.) Arrr, me belie'e the chilly mornin' weather will put a damper on Captain Ray's buffy fishin' this fall season. If not for him we may all have been less fishy and clothed, gar! Thanks Captain Ray, gar! Cap'n M. Organ....he be me close chum on a chilly eve....arrr, thar be a small mis-spoken word in that thar statement...me means the bottl o' rum, not me chum the good Capt'n. Me bird says NO, arrr. Some men like their partake in fishin'...some men Partake in their quest for foulin'...some men concur in the fond hearin of the canonball roarin'....Me, me likes sleepin', 'specially in Cherree's chamber -

Man, what the heck is this? Looks like all the protesters in DC...Send them down there to help save us all Well Stan I'm sorry that there are no pics right now. I was gonna put something on here but the Sony hard drive took a dump and now I am using the backup stoneage Toshiba with no card reader except for a CF port that nothing uses much today. If I can I will try to appease the mad crowd of demonstrators with the posters by offering another plan for the salvation of the thread Mark -

I'm tellin ya it's IN THE HAT!!!!!!!!! right Jerry?.....our personal friend Toby said it was good MOJO to wear his signature straw hat Mark -
Calf Island spit, a shoal that runs south off Calf Island was good at nite this time of year for me several years ago. If the wind is blowing just right you can be very stealthy and drift on top of the shoal, engine off, with bucktail jigs and worm or minnow bouncing off the bottom. Check with the locals up there about it, maybe you can get a recent report. just be careful of a south wind that blows a little too hard cause that shoal can get pretty rough with wave amplification coming up on the shallows. Charge up the glowing stuff and hit the inside waters (100ft or less) before sunup for kings. Glow J-plugs were good last week at the Oak. Moonshine spoons took hits as well as glow sd's and glow flies. Try mid depths to 75% down (75 feet over 100....45 over 60 ) etc. over the bottom to start, that seemed to be the strike zone last week, but things change so watch your sounder for bait and hooks nearby. Some fish have been coming off the bottom too. Steelies are active offshore in the moonlight. Again glows and flashy spoons are good. Look for the bait pods and the steel will usually be nearby. Good Luck! Mark

One of my hottest spoons for Steelies is a Gold hammered Doctor spoon with red or orange edges. Size of spoon is a 285 or bigger. The spoon is very speed forgiving and has a wide erratic wobble that gets a lot of attention. Most any spoon with red or orange seems to be a good color. Chicken wing is a good choice too. crushed green glow spinny and a jitter fly on 18 inch flouro leader works pretty good too. What everybody has said....go way out to deep water find a scum line and weave through it. Mark
