  3. My deepest sympathy to Shirley and the family of Joe...Strength and peace be with you all. My sincere gratitude to Joe and Shirley for their commitment to sharing with us all, a great deal of knowledge and expertise with the community of sportsmen and women on Lake Ontario. Joe will truly be missed by all, but certainly never forgotten. Solemnly, I am....Mark
  4. Your not alone with your feelings for a friend in a father -in-law. I was preparing my boat that had been put away for years, and neglected. The reason for the renewed interest in fishing the big "o" was him...He said "I just wanna get out there, and catch one more big fish". He was 81 years old, survived ww2, was shot down over the English channel....now he couldn't see hardly at all, walked with a shuffle due to a stroke earlier in his life. He confided, he was having chest pains only to me, and as he was hoping to go out for that last big fish he finally decided to let the doctors try to fix him up.....needless to say he never came back from the hospital. I just put the boat back in the barn and waited until I could get over the feeling of lost time. All the time you had with him, will be priceless memories, and it is a stark reminder that time is of the essence to enjoy and live to the fullest every moment we have here with friends and family. Peace to you and your family, Chris. Mark
  5. Don't see riggers...did you use divers or just jig em up...nice looking fish, very healthy, good job, thanks for the great pics! Mark
  6. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.h ... 20Licenses New York Times article on the county clerks fight to keep revenues in the counties and how the State Commissioner is trying to take the counties out of the picture, thereby reducing county income for local collection...Idiots in Albany again
  7. I got one of those girlfriends..she picks out a rod for fishin and it has the most colorful design i've ever seen. I use it for a copper rig cause its so heavy and long...never the less we had to have it cause it's "Pritty"...never mind if it works or not Welcome to the expensive world of salmon fishing....may your wallet survive...and yer lures be many..specially the Pritty ones...keep her intrested and she won't notice the first about the wallet Mark
  8. Only place I've got em is at the south end of calf island. A bit of shoal called calf island spit runs for about 1/4 mile south to a marker. many moons ago I have gone there and caught walleyes on top of that shoal at night and the time was in August....so I don't know about now but that is my experience...drifted bucktail jigs tipped with nitecrawler with no motor running. south to north wind blowing about 5 to 10 mph back towards the island...worm harnesses worked too just working them up off the bottom and touching back down. Other than that I don't know where else to go except in early season the guys that do hook up generaly fish the black river gay up near the shallows of the river mouth. stealth is a priority there as there are lots of boats in the general area and most are using electric motors or just drifting in the wind. Word of caution about Calf island.. the waves build fast there as the wind increases from the south, and the shoal amplifies the steepness so be careful of the side drift presentation... way out in open water just so you know to be prepared. 10. Like Erin said, the august / september time is best for large king salmon up to 40lbs (18.14kg). However the normal catch is usually 20 to 30 lbs (9.07 - 13.06kg). It is a trophy over 35lbs (15.88kg) for a king salmon. We have coho, and atlantic salmon as well as brown trout, steelhead, (rainbow), and of course, the not so popular but always willing to bite, lake trout. We are under winter conditions here too in New York and Lake Ontario as well as the rest of the Great Lakes, but april is a good start month for the fishing season. Typically western New York waters are the earliest to start the salmon fishing because of the warmer water flow from the Niagara river. There you can experience fast action off the bar as it enters Lake Ontario. The action picks up along the New York shore towards my home port of Point Breeze about mid May as the larger salmon start to spread out east. By late June and into July the action is mostly off shore for salmon in depths up to 550 feet of water. We find bait clouds and determine the thermocline (temp change depth) in order to target the best chances of hooking up with kings. Steelheads are always a favorite of mine and can be found mostly in 200 to 550 feet of water during summer. They will provide an excellent fight on light tackle with many walking on the water and jumping several times during a fight. Florida is nice, did you do some fishing there? Do you go there often? Oh hey here is a link that you can watch during the height of the season on westen New York salmon fishing. http://www.attheoak.com/fishrpt.html
  11. Mika, Welcome to the forum! It is great to see the similarities of our fishing methods. Your VK site is impressive, really like the great photos in the gallery. I will look forward to finding the baithead rigs at your new dealer here in the USA. Cabella's! Next shopping day at Cabella's , I will purchase some of the baitheads and give you a report on my success. I am looking forward to getting out as soon as the boat launches are open. Tight lines Mika!...let us know when you are coming this way! Mark

  13. Tried Watoma shoals once with my son....ran all the way down from the Oak, mid afternoon to about dark tried driftin jigs and trolling harnesses but nada...except a goby or two when the bait hit the bottom for more than a nano second ..water was real clear...see bottom from thirty feet, thought that was bad for eyes to be there, but who knew? Maybe at nite like you said and be vewy vewy quiet. They gotta be out there some where, I've seen the spawners in the cranberry and they are HUGE!...some brave idiots even catch and not release those hogs, every season when the perch come in after ice out ...I know there are some stagging around the breakwall at the Oak and some guys hit em after dark there so maybe nite is the ticket at watoma. Mark
