Boating and lightning.... you should read this!
skipper19 replied to Fishtails's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I had the expierience once on a small lake in otsego county called Canadarago. There was a black cloud moving in and there was no lightning at the time but there was definite static draw on the graphite rods standing up on the console rod holders. I was standing up casting and kept hearing this buzz...snap...buzz...snap behind me, I finally had to see what the heck was the noise and found sparks arching from the GRAPHITE rods to the metal railing around the console about an inch or more away  ...I grabbed the rods and got a shock from them and laid em down on the deck and had the family on board sit low in the boat....needless to say I hauled butt to shore after that....also when ya cast, and yer in an aluminum boat if yer line does the watusie above the water and it is the plastic kind not braid, and yer lure goes in the water, but yer line won't.....look up in the sky and see a black cloud movin' over get the heck outta th water....CAUSE THE STATIC IS TRYIN' TA ZOOM IN ON YA -

something for your cell phone if you have a data plan that can give you a very good INSTANT update to the conditions in the area where you are is My Cast Weather and radar program. It even gives the latest lightning strikes in the area within the past 45 minutes and puts the display in motion for you to get a good idea of the course of travel of the storms. It cost $3.95 a month for access but it beats having to spend beaucoup $ for a radar on the boat. -
Went east to 78.4 looked around for an hour from 200 fow to 400 fow... came back to 200fow at 78.1 then went west on a troll pattern stiching a current break at the 225 fow area...Took a steely on a Big Doctor silver spoon mupped above a Kevorkian E-lure at 62 ft....at 6pm and the 78.4 line still in 235 fow took a 7 lb king on a DW chicken wing mupped below a pirate mag watermellon with seeds at 80 feet down....speed 2.5 gps..lake flat at evening...quit after the king came aboard.

I've got a couple of Proos manuals and they work great if ya don't mind winding...but that is not bad either because of the oversize wire spool. You can bring up 3 feet of cable in one spin of the crank. Solid construction...Had these for 20 years now. keepin em fer my 14 ft alumacraft now that I got scotty power riggers on the big boat.

I'd say by the time you can see a flag and what color it is or if ya can hear some one yelling over a motor running(unless on a vhf or a bullhorn) or see arms flailing around about staying clear of the stern,...... ya can probably read here's yer sign  printed in 2000 font size.. any body ever troll that close in reality :? BULLHORN  AIRHORN   I like the sign.... just put it on a bed sheet and drape it off the stern as yer leavin' port and forget it

Yup I heard the distress call the coasties were talking about from a child report. Good that you took the time to clear your area of the search. I know about the diapers for the baby salmon, But arn't they cute! and so livlely....only I wish they wouldn't get the hook stuck up under the chin like most of the time... makes me feel bad for them doin' extra surgery ta get them back in the water. Mark also saw the coastguard send out the helicopter on a search pattern reconisance run -

Ray, I saw you going up the river as I was pulling my truck to the ramp for pulling out after dark (county side). also think I caught the tail end of your radio check with the coasties as I was leanin out over the back of the boat doin some riggin. Heard Pegasus bein hailed . You were near me I believe, out from lakeside, flanking around with a charter. I was the center console that came into your area from out deeper. Guess I shoulda tryed ya on the radio but wasn't sure what you monitor... probably 68 like most. DIAPERS  Not for you I hope You can call me out there when I'm out.. my vessel name is AIN'T SKIER'D. gotta get the lettering done though -

Out of point breeze...All I can say is SKUNK! Fished all weekend with four of us on the boat. 7 and 8 rod spread ..friday was so so with steelhead and small kings in the afternoon. Saturday 8 rod spread mid morning to dark a couple of nockoffs and nothing.....skunk for the first time this season  Sunday morning was west wind did two steels and lost at the boat....pulled out went to family picnic and came back late afternoon a little more west and SKUNK again   So don't feel like the lone ranger about the lack of fish... I did the same program going out to 550 feet and back and forth across over 7 minutes of longitude and got very little returns on the graph... mostly bait. but I will say it took a bit for me to relize that the bait was shallow and the fish were too.. 25 ft under the boat  in over 400 feet of water. Probably the reason for not marking too much out there anywhere. East wind was blowing on sunday evening when after the west wind was blowing the morning and that caused a mess with the temp breaks. We need more stable weather to set the lake up... hope the fishing picks up for the youngin's -

Started out at the 150 fow trolled north to around 175fow picked two small kings on the riggers nk 28's down 85ft. Kept north and a little west out to 420 ft after that and searched for larger fish...not a chance... the lake was flat and so was the fishing for a couple of hours. then some sporadic action on spoons again, but nothin' big. Right at sundown the slider and riggers started firing with steelhead 5 to 8 lbs 320fow... quit at dusk..somewhat slow but went 5 for 7 on a rather nice day anyway..will be back out tomorrow AM. I've never met you Ray.....but it doesn't matter....not that I wouldn't want to..it's just that we haven't been formerly introduced or informally for that matter. There's one thing about the internet and sometimes the phone (900 #s) ....well maybe not those, but you can tell when there are good folks on the other end. There are a lot of good folks all together here and we are all kind of like family somewhat displaced by time and space. One thing I know for sure is we all share a common bond or two or three....WE LOVE FISHIN', our families and friends...and that's what we are on here for... to share in triumphs and difficulties, to have a place to become one with all on here, this site.... Well..... long as there's 45lb copper wirin' still left hangin from th' trees there in Lyntucky...I still gota good connection ta that qwerty board....even out here in the harborcreek, PA office Again......GODSPEED to your dad's wellness, and I'll see ya sometime...like I said if not...I can tell yer OK RAY MAN!!!!! can you use a BLACK BOX with Sub-troll 900
skipper19 replied to pleasure unit's topic in Tackle and Techniques
did ya put a voltmeter on the cables (positive on the cable with ball down 10ft or more....negative on battery ground) when yer in the water? A meter that can read tenths or hudredths of dc will work for a readin.... Long as its not showin negative voltage and its not over .3 positve it shouldn't be bad....water conditions will affect the readin different every day....water temp and chemical composition of the water affects it...Check yer readins at the main engine ground to the cables too....could have some leakage from the engine electronics....also use Rays stainless steel brush on the anode...be sure it's got good contact with motor and the zinc is got some shine. -

skipper19 replied to pleasure unit's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Are you running a kicker? Cause if ya are... the kicker needs ta be grounded to the main engine's ground otherwise yer sacraficial zink anode on the kicker will cause a ground feed to it. Ya might notice the anode wearing away. also try cleanin the zincs if they are coroded with a white crust on them. just in case ya wanna try figurein out the voltage leaks Mark -

Is there a difference between car & boat wax?
skipper19 replied to Diversion's topic in This Old Boat
Well waxin off is probably due to the missin' sheeps on the pics forum.... ya first gotta become an apprentice baiter when ya start fishin, and then after a spell ya can move up to a master........ Ray  -
Copper: Another question
skipper19 replied to Boatino's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Sure was fun though, Ray cracks me up .....Go ahead and use the wirin' but don't let no blow boat cap'ns near yer stern there... cause they want yer copper for martini $. It's OK John, we might be a little off the edge, but we don't mean no harm Ask any time if'n ya wanna laugh1 Mark -
