Pro Troll black box?
skipper19 replied to skipper19's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
tbromund, I am in the same thinking and was ponderin the way fishin with long lines has come back in force. Heck my grandpa usta fish for Otsego bass in what is known now as Cooperstown Lake. He had ta fish wit wire cause he didn't have a down rigger cause that contraption was unheard of back then. Now folks are ravin' over a long line and thought that this is strange cause ifn ya got a rigger at 60 ft and a long line out there a country mile doin the same depth, what makes the long line seem like the hot ticket. -

Pro Troll black box?
skipper19 replied to skipper19's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Guess nobody has got one. I wanted to see if anybody experienced what happened to me Monday. This is strange but for real. I had a friend out there from point breeze and we were runnin four rods off the outboard riggers stacked. The black box is on.... set at .600 to make salmon feel gooood. Suddenly we get a rip on starboard side... friend grabs it.... I clear the other rod on that rigger.... I got to other side to clear those rods but  There's a fish on one rod and I think it is small and can't release the clip... so I yank and yank and it seems it won't release :? .... then friend says I lost him ... yhen starts reelin slack... wait  it's still there...same thing goes on three times, he thinks he looses the fish... we are still trolling so this is strange :? ...... finally I determine that the rod I'm tryin to clear with the fish hooked on a 60 ft drop from the ball has come forward and wrapped around the starboad cable.....eventually the friends salmon comes aboard and we get the starbord cable up to find a bare hook... no fish :? ...HuH! musta wrenched off on the ball.. I ponder the thought that maybe the .600 volts coursin down the cable was causing these two fish to charge at the boat even while we were makin way at 2.6 mph. Go figure. but just a guess. Maybe -

http://www.findmespot.com/Home.aspx copy and paste this link to your browser for a look at a very good piece of equipment for anybody going out on adventures of any kind. about $150 to $175 for the unit and $99 for basic service $49 for tracking. It's called SPOT and will find you and keep friends and family informed of your location and condition. Keep it on you along with the pfd and you are not alone when you are. pfd is OK but it needs to be on and yet it still will not rescue you in cold water without cell coverage, I don't know of any cell that will take water and still work, SPOT will keep working in the water. CHECK IT OUT! Mark

Ray, I put a hat on so the martians can't power up their outhouses with any energy reflected by my skull. We got a new accumulator (some folks call them SILOs fur corn) in Medina now and they are supplyin me with lots of 200proof, but it ain't makin electricity for Lyntucky, cause all the copper wirin is at the junkyard in trade for $ to buy 200 proof gasahol ta power thier cigarette boats  (what a waste of good corn). And to top it off they are usin that methane ya talk about ta make the stuff! Talk about carbon imprint, man there is a lot of fat people feedin that thing. Then there is the effect of weather reducin the imprint over there in China, and Burma, but they're skinny so maybe it dosen't count. Hey fishstix tell the wife that the kicker should have power tilt for safety cause ya don't want to fall outa the boat tryin ta lift that thing and pinchin, yer fingers at the same time, and don't forget ta tell her that the money ya save can go towards pots and pans ta cook yer catch!
-
Bracket like Ray said is very important to be a good sturdy one and if you can mount it so your kickers tiller is away from your main out board you will not have to remember to fold the tiller up before you make a hard turn and bend up your tiller on the main engine. Not me!!!! mine has a 9.9Yamaha 4 stroke on a 22ft aquasport with dive platform, tiller on the wrong side next to the 225 Yamaha and I have to remember. Just a tip that saves a later sadness. Yup it saves beaucoup $. Mine has it's own 6 gal tank and is a quik remove for use on my little alumicraft. 9.9 or less is good for use on small lakes like Hemlock where you can't have more than 10hp. Ray did you hear that global warming is now caused by fat people? What about that?

Copper: Another question
skipper19 replied to Boatino's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
if'n ya see one about a gallon size with XXX on it floatin by itself. bring it back ta me but don't drink the balast, it's 200 proof. Yeah copper is a last resort but it might be worth more at the junk mans yard. -
Copper: Another question
skipper19 replied to Boatino's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Ok, let me try this one more time. See if'n ican get my point straight ( not the one on my head). Last year I ran the outhouse 45lb wirein on a penn 209 and i wanted to get deeper than malin would go, closer to the boat so i would still have enough backin to let a fish run 500 ft or so. I only had 300 ft of 45lb copper not 1000ft like ya thought on my 209 cause i had to keep people from gittin ate by bears at nite when they pooped, so gave it back, but the price of junk.... now thats a thought.....oh yeah. fishin in close and achievin the depth without haulin around a tractor trailer 600ft of copper around behind the boat and then only havin 400 ft of backin to work with on a run. people talk about bein spooled are lettin out too much line and aint got a reel big 'nuff. anyways i don't want to fish that far from the boat, think about it, 1200 feet? thats a fur peice of outhouse wire and backin. dern near 1/5 mile. I got blow boat captn's tryin ta steal my wirein, an they don't offer a martini even. anyway my 309 don't have 1000feet awire onit, only 600 ft of 30lb wit 30lb power pro -
Copper: Another question
skipper19 replied to Boatino's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
[ I might be wrong here (1st time in my life),as to the way im reading this post gosh i hope not. so maybe this helps or not..Ray K. You have never been more correct in your life Ray and I am just a hillbilly transplanted here from the catskills and made to be a flatlander out here in Lyntucky! yes I am running heavy 45 lb copper braid for close in side dipsey settings. It sinks fast and if I want to go down 60 feet, I let out 180 feet and that is close in running compared to 272.72.72.72 feet of flatline and thats not including the part of the line still above water and that depends on tip of rod above water.......awww shucks this is way toooo tech for this banjo player. Getting spooled would be less of a chance when there is still 120 feet of copper and 400 feet of backing on these small reels. I don't like using copper at all really. It's bulky and makes the rod more work to hold than fighting a 40 lb salmon. But it keeps fleas off when they are here and then there is the spread of the divers I like that you can't get with a flat 600ft line out, and yes I run that too with 1000 feet total spool on a Penn 309.....If it comes to the bitterend....my boat also can stop, turn, backup, and or chase down the screamer....btw I don't fish in gatherings so I won't mess up anybody's program. IF ya hear foggy mountain breakdown commin from a blue, gold and white, center console.....ya might be toooo close But I won't care if ya like ho down come oooon over. Thanks Ray, we gotta meet sometime. Mark -
Copper: Another question
skipper19 replied to Boatino's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I was using the dipsey diver last year when I had small capacity reels and the rate of decent was 1 ft for 3 out which is a quick drop. there wasn't a lot of room for backing and the copper, and I got the depth I wanted and wasn't bothered by the flea infestation that was going on at the time. This year I just wound an old Penn 309 with 600 ft 30lb copper and 400 ft of 30 lb power pro. Haven't used it yet. the dipseys were for each side and to get more spread with a small reel thats all. -
Went out at 4:30 set up out west of port 4 rods at 25ft to 45 ft fished 75fow to 130fow. One 10 lb salmon and 3 small returnables lost a good one 5 min after release. a couple of knockoffs. Quit at 9 pm Chichen wing nk did it best then the hot pink silver nk. Kevorkian mag had one on lost and a knock off. Wind was a bit of a problem, but otherwise weather held out. Fish were scattered no real pattern to set up on.

LMS models are good, and yes what william said the fish id should be turned off, however strange that you dont see the rigger balls displaying a straight line across the screen HMMMMM :?: -

It probably hasn't enough power for the sensitivity level required to pick up fish at deep water. If you can get one with 4000watts and a 200kz ducer it would work better for ya. I traded my 19ft boat with a X135 on it for a new boat and have an lms335 from lowrance on this one. The X135 worked well for me but I think it already has become antiquated. Wish I still had it, then I could offer it to you cheap. Did you turn the sensitivity way up to 100% and still nothing? -
Got to love a blow boat captain, only after you're offered a martini for your frustration of tackle loss. cartwheels  Did it look like sail/keel sail/keel head over heals

Copper: Another question
skipper19 replied to Boatino's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I have run 45lb copper with a diver and 8 ft Okuma diver rod. The rod has strong guides and will last a log time with the wire. The copper sends a dipsey down about 80-90 ft with 300ft out on a #2 setting, depending on speed and lure. This keeps the fleas off real good when they start up. Only thing I don't like is the feeling I am realing in winch cable and the lack off "feel of the fight", but it works ,OH and that depth is achieved with out the ring installed on the diver, less drag on the equipment. -

Good job Bandit! Wives work good for extra fishin now if you can get the bowser a license MORE RODS!!!! yipeeee. -
Well finally got out to actually fish on Sunday evening. Been tryin to get the new boat ready to fish MY way, think I got it ironed out now. Anyway did real good a little west of port 5-8:30 PM with just two rods in 80fow down 35 and 45 with a nk 28 chicken wing and nk hot pink and silver. 2.4 on the gps and 53.7 on the surface. Just went around in circles after locating some silvers, couldn't keep them off the poles at the same time. Two doubles and several knockoffs released three small ones and one nice one lost after a 2 minute thrashing. Ended up with the sun going down on the water and a final double with a 12lb king. All in all avery satisfying day, will see if I can get out Monday with more fisherman onboard and report again.

Best all around line and lb test for trout and salmon
skipper19 replied to muskybob's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Been using 17lb trilene green for years and to get the fleas off last year I went to using the trilene for backing and spooled on 150ft ( enough to reach the ball from the boat) of flea flicker 30 lb and then went back to 17lb trilene for 60ft to go from the ball back to the lure. The flea flicker works well to reduce collection of the pesky critters but it is a flat, not round line and tends to blow back on the troll a little more. I've had good success with this combo. Mark -
If you want to see where the balls are get a finder with a dual cone transducer, 50 kz will see the balls with a wde cone and 200 kz will give depth and definition. switch back and forth for the info you want on balls and fish. make sure you get plent of wattage to see the details of thermocline etc. yes faruno is a good brand, and if you get asingle purpose fish finder you can get a very good unit for near 800 frogskins, minus the gps

JC, I have used a fly rod as a noodle and the real seat is on the back behind the handle where you can mount any kind of ultralite spinner reel and fine line for finesse. As long as you don't want to put the rod in a gimble holder this works just fine and the fly rod has a double duty. An old shakespear wonder rod is what works for me. PS thanks for the service to our country and good luck out there! Mark

JC, .....What Ray said...Thank you for your service to our freedoms!!! Yes Sir the fishing has been and still is hot this season. I have been away for this year so far but am going to get out the end of next week at Point Breeze. Hope you have a bundle of good luck! I'll watch for your posts of glory on the lake. Welcome back!
