  1. I've never run 20, but have used 25. Either seaguar or Gamma flourocarbon because those have never failed good knot tests. I would say 20 lb is minimal due to the non stretch copper and backing. Of course a lot plays into the initial force applied by an ambitious king, like rod action and power, drag set, etc. Flouro materials vary by manufacturer and some just don't cut it. I use the two mentioned exclusively with the best confidence in my experience. The leader is also somewhat of a shock absorber and the longer that leader is the more shock-absorbing properties it will have.A spro swivel that will just let the 45lb copper through the eye would be best. It keeps the strands from flattening out so much in the bend. Once they flatten the strength goes down. I don't use swivels on any of my coppers, so I cannot say what size is best. Try the copper through the eye of the swivel and see if it just passes through, that would be the one that I would choose. I recall others suggesting a size 8? As far as leader test, 20 is going to be your limit on breakage. Copper maybe 20 to 25 probably not 30. Your backing is still the most robust of the combo. Just a consideration about that whole combo. I tend to set my drag a little tight on coppers in the chute for better hookup, but also take consideration in the rod power features. 2. The flourocarbon leader won't take up too much. Depends on its length and how many wraps on the spool, but you should be fine with the 30 lb backing. Like mentioned before in another post, you don't want to have the copper loose, or close, on the spool or a Newby letting it peel off and overrun the spool. Always better to have a little room around the spool from the frame and the level wind guide. I use a 30 foot 30 lb. leader, you could probably do fine with 15 or 20 feet, and that would only put a few wraps on the spool. 30 lb braid is strong stuff, the worst problem is the copper with any knot. Some use a haywire to a spro, I don't use any connection involving any knot and that is another method using hollow core braid however, and not everyone has tools or patience to set those up. However, it is very nice when done! Smooth and 100% strong. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. Reminds me of my dad always saving bacon grease to cook things in. He always breaded and fried his walleyes in the bacon grease....wow...very tasty, however he only lived to 61 years..he liked the fat stuff just a bit too much. Nice ideas folks! Now when do we eat? 4. Yup! Once again a very realistic rep! Hey.. I have really detailed pics of a king that I caught. 29lbs 13 oz. I lost the exact measurements, but probably can close estimate them by the photos. Do you think it possible to make a cast of it, and paint it close to original, based on pics? Just wondering...if it is possible what would it cost to do that? PM me if you have an idea or estimate or suggestions. Not sure how any of the work is done!..nice talent and workmanship! Regards Mark Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Straight up...but looks to me there is not much color ANYWHERE. Lake flippage no dout. Find some bait pods and hope there are some hooks around them, all else fails, you will no dout find some lakers. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  6. Yes, very close the 30LW squall is 370 yards of 30lb mono. The 55 is 360 yards 30 lb. Mono. 10 yards larger with the Penn. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  7. The 45/50 combo is in red The 45/30 combo is green with .22 cu in space...that's ideal for the leader wind on. I didn't do the 45/40 combo yet. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  8. Howdy Chas. I was looking at the Penn squall 30LW specs and it does have enough volume for what you are going to do. I feel the 650 ft. 40 lb backing is gonna be tight, but should be fine, be sure to wind it tight. I ran 50 lb backing on the calculator, and it won't do, however 30 lb leaves you a bit of room that should be ideal for your wind on flourocarbon leader.Remember the 45lb copper really isn't a tensile breaking point of 45 lbs. so you won't loose any strength over the copper with 30 lb if you go that option. I have all my coppers backed with 30 power pro and never an issue with that. The copper will break way quicker than the power pro 30. The braid lines almost all are under rated by 40 to 50 % in straight line breaking point and use the knot strength basis, therefore 30 lb at the knot and braid tends to bite itself with certain knots. The only one not rated that same basis is blood run braid backing. It's the same diameter as power pro 30, but rated in straight line breakage, not at the knot, resulting the 65 lb claimed backing being same diameter as 30lb. Good luck with your new reels! Sounds good to me! You should still be fine with the 40 lb backing. It's only 1 thousandth more thickness than the 30 and wound tightly should be no trouble really. 14. Wish I could get my bowser on the boat. She went as far as the dock and it made a noise. Scared the crap out of her! Almost yanked my arm off trying to fly! Pit bull...very scary dog!...yeah right. Lol! Must be the Scooby-Doo great dane mixed in..[emoji102] [emoji90] Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. Just Giving a review... Not trying to sell one, nor affiliate, or otherwise push. I've never owned one of these roto molded coolers before this one, and it will likely be my last one, unless you bring more beer/food for my cooler...then the benefit of size off sets the cost of bigger! 16. Depends on how rough you are on a cooler. The price points on coolers are mainly based on longevity in rough service. Yeah, they'll all toot their horn on ice keeping ability, but what that comes down to usually in any cooler is how you load it , pre cool it, how many times a day do you open it, and available shade for storing it with ice. Yeti advertises too much. End of story, because that costs big bucks. Bottom line costs are affected hugely by this. There are coolers out there as good with out the notoriety. Even Coleman or igloo doesn't advertise as hard, and they are alright for ice chests, just most are not as durable and you might buy more than a couple in a lifetime. End user costs go up in that case, and you might have bought a much more robust make, and had it for a couple of generations, so it becomes a hand me down for your offspring! Put it in your will! Lol! Seriously though, that is the consideration on the price of a Yeti type ice chest for me. Not that you need to pay for advertising, but there are many as good and some better, that don't jump out of the Saturday morning hunting and fishing shows, or take a whole page or two of full color ads in your favorite magazine to entice you in their product. Here is one that I considered an investment worth every penny, and you don't find them advertising all over the place. I bought a Grizzly brand ice chest, and you can't hurt this thing in any activity short of throwing it in a very hot fire for a couple hours. It will last a lifetime, and the hinges and latches are part of that consideration. I have an Igloo as well and it has been a decent cooler for years but the plastic latches have broken and I dropped an ice block in it once and it busted a hole in the liner!...not good! Water gets in there and bye bye insulation. Fixed it with some 4200 epoxy...seems ok, but you know you can't do that all the time. The Grizzly is very tough. It's no light weight. It will hold ice as long as the Yeti claims, the lid is tight with rubber refrigerator gasket and has nice heavy rope handles or rigid grips either to help you pick it up...with a friend..if it is a large one of 120 quarts or more. Mine is heavy, but those roto molded type of coolers all are heavy. This has very nice rubber feet on the bottom and you can't make it slide around. That has its advantages and disadvantages. I found if I want the cooler to slide into the pickup bed...nope...not gonna. Gotta get up in there and pick it up! Lol! The cooler drains from either end with very large screw in plugs. Inside is made for freezable ice panels to slide in, and can be used for separating foods. These things however have not been very cheap. I understand the science of the liquid gel that is colder than ice but, it's pricey. Oh, and of course it's made to frustrate a bear that knows what a cooler is. It can be pad locked shut! Lol..now if the bear gets really smart and has a lock pic...hmmm. So check the Grizzly, it's a lot less than the Yeti, as good as without the expensive ads. More than a Coleman or Igloo. Others I have looked at and as good as are Orca, Pelican, Engle, and a few others, but for the price you absolutely cannot beat a Grizzly. Mine came from Amazon, and had a great price for its value. Also check the grizzly factory site for specials. I think they even have some blems that are functionally OK, but may have a color pigment off or something with the finish that wasn't passed by inspection. You could get the value of roto molded cooler for quite a bit less. Mark Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. Yeah, mine still sits in the same spot from last September. Haven't even got the trailer licensed either. By the sounds of the crickets (fantastic fish reports), not much to get excited about. So I'm out here on the big road, in my big truck, slowing up all the recreational activities on Memorial day weekend, with my big, fat, slow, overloaded 18 wheeled sled, delivering all those fine fishing magazines for couch fishermen, and of course... 20. What he said...yup, I learned that from Ray K. ..trolling for old bags works if ya git enough of them, they'll slow ya down good. 22. There's a video showing a drone carrying a surf cast bait out over the water and dropping it more than 1000 feet from the beach. I know I've seen guys using kites to do this but, the wind has to be right. Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  23. I had some photos saved of your catches while on the High Voltage. I learned a lot about your setup on meat rigs that you shared on LOU. It certainly was a great help in my first efforts of using bait heads and twinkie rigs! Here's another great photo!Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. You wouldn't think the local thieves would even try anything in the area of the oak. Sheriff's office is right there. They make rounds at the county park very very often. More than one officer is always around. Border patrol is seen often. Security cameras are in place Makes me wonder exactly who is the thief there. 25. I did wonder where and what happened Mark! I have always remembered your amazing catches and have saved some of these great shots of your catches! Welcome back, Mark! Hope you find a very nice vessel to enjoy. Looking forward to more great reports from you! Soon, you will look like this! "I fish for salmon!" Congrats on your journey back man! My gratitude for your sacrifices is overwhelming sir! Mark Sent from my SM-N900P using Lake Ontario United mobile app
