Lol! I get it... they come here after 4 years old so they can get free dentures and lamprey removal. So they bite on the Obama spoon...it runs way off left and ruins the whole program and then finds out it's a sham. So it dies anyway. How sad is that?

Brian!...where's the expiration date stamped on the Salmon. Does it say " I'm a 4 year old"? How can you tell?:huh:

Incase you want to run a long copper but at a shorter distance you can tie on a D loop of waxed dental floss and hook the blacks release on that. I do that with the outriggers and it works great! Nice easy bend on the copper with two holding points on it, and it can be color coded with permanent marker for distance. No problem through the guides or on the reel. D loop. I also tie on the outside 4 or 5 half hitches and go to the inside of the loop and do the same. Trim of the tag ends. Good to go and won't slip. Mark -

The tensile strength mentioned here is exactly what I have found as described and I have mentioned this just recently in another thread on copper size preference. There is virtually no difference in performance of the 32lb and 45lb class super copper in either depth or breaking point as I have seen. I like the 32lb for the space it leaves for backing allowing a much smaller reel with less weight. For repairs or adding a section I like to use 80lb power pro hollow ace. It works well with either 32 or 45 lb blood run. The connection is smooth and transitions nicely, however not a great way to repair on the boat. Looks like the idea of winding the tag ends together would not be too hard to do while on the water if needed. Thanks for a great product! Mark

Nice Andy!..I was west and started in about 350 to 400. Couldn't get much to go there but ended near 31 line and back east a bit then got kings around 11 am to 2 pm and boxed out 2 majors and a skippy I couldn't save. Glad to hear you got into them! WTG! -

Fished solo today in 28.5 to 31 lines a little east of port. Started west of port and just rode east and north. I was setting up some release points on my long coppers with waxed dental floss for the outrigger releases and had just finished with them when the deepest rigger running 70 down took off with a pearl white green stripe pro troll echip and Atomik hammer glow fly. A good scream on the Penn reel and the counter was out 270. A good tussle and a one handed net job brought the first king in the boat. Whew! Sweat pouring off now! Set it back down to run at 60 cause there were streakers on the screen at that level. Temp was between 46 and 49 in 60 to 70 fow. I had spoons down intermittent but they didn't do anything so I let the long coppers run off the outriggers instead with spin doctors, one with twinkie meat, and the other with a blue/green alewife fly. Both coppers were running at 400 feet one a 45 lb the other a 32 lb blood run presentation. The 32 lb took a shot with nobody home pulling the alewife fly. Set it back and shortly after it flys off the outrigger and the blacks release. It screams off the other 200 feet of copper remaining on the reel and continues to scream off another 300 feet of backing! Now I got work to do..and a much longer battle than the first major with all of 900 feet out to come back with. Finally the battle is over and one handed net job again, with a struggle to get it in the boat...getting old I guess! Good thing there was time in between these fish to recover with my frog togg chilly pad! That thing is a life saver on a hot still day! Thanks to Yankee Troller Rick for suggesting it a couple years ago!. One more shot on the echip flasher and hammer fly produced a skippy from 75 feet off the rigger and it was a bleeder so I boxed it for a limit and quit for the afternoon. Great day and great weather. Fishing was scattered for kings out deep. Great weather, fishing a bit scattered for kings...no steelhead today.

Well Andy, I didn't make it out this afternoon, but the boat is all ready and will be out tomorrow morning. I don't think fishing has been stellar any place this day. Sodus was slow on Ruff Rider. A couple guys out of Olcott had same kind of reports. Where ya staying Andy? -

Les is right! I'm in the camp of the smoother and harder the line is the better. Size of line has some effect but hard smooth composition is what I believe to be the best repellent there is. New line of any size over 30 lb is better just because it is smoother and less exposure to elements of nature to rough up the surface of the line. If you run your line for 2 or 3 seasons, it's gonna be dirty and rough. No two ways about it, that's what the fleas are sticking to. So when you replace line with new out of the box mono, you are getting the smooth hard composition that makes it slick. I think most of us are thinking that it is a particular line brand or line manufacturer that is the smoking gun on whacking the fleas off. To some extent yes, but it is new so we are sure to believe it was better than what was on there for the past 3 seasons. I have had 20 lb flea flicker that was 3 seasons old and it did worse than new 30 lb ande mono. Face it ...old line grabs fleas cause it is rough and dirty ...new line will do better because it is clean out of the box. I wish I could find some fly line treatment, apply it with a cleaning pad as the rigger goes down or up, and take my 3 season old mono out and run comparison to one not treated. I think it would help. Certain kinds of line is more of a hard compound. Flourocarbon is one, Ande Monster Mono is another. And there are different kinds of fleas too. Some more PIA than others.

Copper 300 400 500
skipper19 replied to stillfishing's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yup, what Les said! I have experimented with rubber band on copper with releases, you can do it, but what I have found is the hook up ratio goes down due to stretching before breaking the band or releasing the clip...that's on outriggers. I am now going to try waxed dental floss tied on the copper in a D loop (like on a bow string) for placing in the release and give me visible footage markers. I'll let ya know how it works. My only concern is the fleas on the floss. Hoping waxed floss will help. The Floss will flatten to mostly nothing on the reel and should last for a while. Also can color it with permanent markers for reference on length. Mark -
The big difference in the diameter of 32 vs 45 lb copper is where you really gain extra volume for backing a lot with the 32lb. You can spool on way more 32 than 45 on the same reel. Up to 200 feet more with the same diameter of backing used. 32 lb copper is .030 in. 45 lb copper is .033 in. It doesn't seem like a lot...3 thousands of an inch, but when that keeps overlaying 100 cranks of the handle at say 36 inches per crank it adds up quick. .003 X 2 = .006 in. ( loss per wrap 180 degrees verticle opposit on the reel) for each 360 degree wrap on the reel. You loose about 1/4 inch clearance on the reel frame with 45 lb vs 32 lb. Therefore loss of total length of copper with 45 lb copper in relation to the reels cubic capacity. That loss calculates to 200 feet less copper using 45lb instead of 32lb Just a dumb truck driver, but driving log calculations are more difficult than this LOL!...Leave it to the Fed's to make it impossible to understand.

1150 feet of 50 lb power pro is what comes off the calculation. That will leave enough for the flouro leader on top.

Copper 300 400 500
skipper19 replied to stillfishing's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Run anything you want off copper wire. You can put it on boards or down the chute, or off outriggers, or 100 foot copper with dive bombs or 100 foot copper stacked on a downrigger cable. It's versitile and adds a longer presentation as a depth control device all on it's own. -
Depends on what # test you want to use for backing, but my calculator says 1900 feet of 30 lb power pro with 300 feet of the 32lb blood run copper. That's a lot! That reel has 6.1 cubic inches capacity with the ability to hold 350 yards of 30 lb mono. You could use 50 lb braid and I could do the calculation for that. Mark

whats best speed on the probe for kings?
skipper19 replied to trolling460's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
The loop they are talking about is not an integral part of the spin doctor nor any attaching device. They are talking about the size of the spin in the water it has with reference to its action. Could be a lot of reasons for not having luck on spin doctors. There are a few basics to be done, and measurement of leader, but in general if it's in the water and you are going the right speed with a fly or meat head on it, you should see action if the fish are turned on to it. They will come from a long way off to find that rig due to its noise and flash. May not commit to a strike but will see other presentations and look at those too. -
Catch a ride on a seasoned fisherman's boat and see the process first hand. You could charter and learn a lot that way too, and your daughter will most assuredly have an experience with the king salmon. Then apply what you learned on your boat. You can read a lot on here and it will help to a degree, but seeing how it's done is a faster learning curve. There is a lot you can overlook and it helps to see and participate in the actual fishing.
