Yup, 4th of July. I try to put on a small display by firing off my old 12 Guage flares dated exp. 2009. They have been stored in the boat as extras in a watertight case along with the flare gun. The gun worked fine, but the flares, all four of them were duds. I do keep them updated... but now I really am sure that keeping the old ones is useless.

That's why when you see me in pics or on the boat, I am wearing coveralls. Light coveralls short sleeve. Also light colored. No gapiosis (shirt and pants separating in the middle fat region) for the bite Flys to grab into. Long enough over tall white socks. Arms are always moving and easily covered with spray. Neck gets swabbed too. The light color reflects UV and actually deters black flies from landing on it. Learned this from some guides in Quebec who were also Indian when he said, "ahhh...dark blue jean...not good". You have lighter color? Why? "Your flies...they like you" Ok so now I try the opposite with UV green t shirt..now he says I might scare fish. What do I do now? Well since these fish in lake Ontario can't see me in the boat and the flies can. I try it, and it does work to a degree. Light poplin 5mm coverall so far is best for me, also do not wear crocks. You will have a bite that matches every hole in the shoe. I don't like sprays much especially around monofilament line. It eats plastic.

Well, I got thinking..:huh::unsure:..these things could not possibly fly. It must be something else. They are inflated with air and the light stick does not make heat. It can't rise in the air. I looked it up and it is a plastic luminous beach ball for parties. Patio, beach, pool, bbq, etc...well they must have been used to play in the lake or in the Niagara or where ever. Now they are on the way to the Saint Lawrence. Not a Chinese lantern. Just a plastic beach ball. Yes the Chinese lantern can be dangerous too with fire as the main ingredient of lift from heat.

Went straight North out of point breeze Sunday evening, to find some thermal breaks and set down at the 29.5 line just past a break at 28.5. Took the better half out with her friend Debbie for a ride and some fishing. Trolled at 7pm back south to see what the break may hold for fish. Set out two 100 coppers at the knot and three riggers 15 to 25 down 50 and 75 feet back. All with spoons. Temp was 66 surface and 46 down 25 and the water was clear black. Rods started to pop at 28.8 line and landed three steelhead in quick order. One was short the other two were nice about 7 and 8 lbs. Before we picked up at 9pm, I netted one more catch. A beach ball looking thing. One of many dozen that were floating in the debris of the break, 9 to 10 miles off shore. Turns out it's one of the "Chinese lantern" things that I saw going up west of my house in Lyndonville on the 4th. I always watch the fire works on the front yard and saw dozens of these things floating into the sky and heading north way out over the lake. Now they are floating all over the place 10 miles offshore. DOZENS OF THEM! Are these things biodegradable! Doesn't seem like it, since they are plastic. Now also, there is a chemical luminous vial, also plastic stuffed into the ball. Can't be good for the environment and a Hazzard to water intakes or props! Just litter and a lot of it. Anyway be aware of the things cause they aren't ever going to fade away. Strange catch And it has another plastic vial with liquid luminescent chemicals. Dozens of these are floating in the lake miles off shore.

I'm pretty sure I use all setting in automatic gain and fishing. It is odd no ball on the full screen 50. I always use split screen for targets one will pickup the other does not. I can't say I ever run just one frequency at a time. I hate fiddling with the settings on this unit other than zoom and screen brightness I leave everything else alone and on auto. Maybe change your angle on the transducer a bit back. You should see the ball hanging when you are sitting still. Then troll speed and see where it goes. If it leaves the screen, you might need a little angle tweak on the transducer.

smart troll vs fish hawk

Les makes the point of learning to put human senses ahead of "automatic" as I did here too. His summary for entry level lake fishing is spot on. Any of us who have fished everything on Lake Ontario since the 80's has learned that human deduction thinking will always be the best tool on the boat. That comes from experience. You can spend thousands on devices that give you data readings and all those can do for a seasoned Ontario Troller is help dial in a set of baits somewhat faster in a data zone. The latest stuff isn't necessary for those on a budget. As I said before I have put the probe on last year and caught less fish...especially kings...can anyone honestly say last year was the best fishing for kings they ever had! Human deduction thinking set in pretty hard end of the season. All the electronic stuff running dead on in the known data zones and I had one of the worst seasons in a long time. So the probe only helped me spend more money to tell me I was doing my fishing in the zone...same as I would have done the previous years only with a lot more head shaking. Automatic is good for convenience. Like electric reels so ya don't have to wind. Just leave the rod in the holder and finish your beer. Auto pilot in case you're drunk or sleepy. No human experience interaction no problem right? Makes me want to get on a plane with pilots with no manual or visual flight skills. Captain Sully..yes..experience. Buffalo flight ...ice on the wings on autopilot until final approach? Not so much. The point is all that stuff can mask a lot of other problems including fishing where there are no fish, not knowing even how to net a fish...what's next automatic net? These probes are only as Carl said "data points"..helpful if ya know what you are looking at and apply experience to it. New guys! Get the experience first..charter with a Captain who will show you his experience. Get on with a seasoned lake fisherman on a boat equipped with downriggers and long line dipsey or coppers. That's what you need before automatic stuff. -
I like the Simrad EVO units. Multiple function touch screen. Sizes all the way up to 18 inch! Big $...but very user friendly and intuitive. Do not have one YET...but planning on a 12 inch display bundle with 4G radar. Hope it performs like I believe it will. The fiddling with settings on what I have is what drives me nuts. Menus and pages and buttons...argh!

Yeah, now that I look again I see the high rigger is strong on 200 and the deep one is weak. I guess the shorter distance is in the smaller part of the cone and just on the border. Where the 50kz has a stronger return on the deep set where the cone is wide and can still catch the image of the deep rigger even as it swings back farther behind the boat outside of the 200 cone. Makes sense kind of.

I put an X4 on my boat last year, and so far have caught less fish with it than I did the previous 4 years...might be poor fishing techniques or might be poor fish population or might be I don't fish as much last year and this year so far. I still rely on my senses of sight sound and graph. Sight...the rods are bent over right The rigger cables are deflecting right and drawing a bubble of air down, creeping on the cable to a foot or more before letting go. The color and look of the water are right. I see a thermocline and bait on the graph I see my riggers on the graph Sound...I hear the hum and whine of the riggers cable. It's right for speed. The drag pulling on the divers...too fast! Then drag screaming...speed just right! Look to see what it is on GPS look to see direction on compass heading....DUPLICATE! now with the probe...it's another gadget to narrow the possibility of a human error...CAPT CARL HAS IT NAILED! -
I hate the smell of pinesol..er maybe it's taint..whatever I do not like it!

Les!...ya gotta attach a gps tracker and flashing strobe to it .."(Hooper style kegs)"..like those repeat tournament winners do. It will follow your trophy salmon around until it gets tired and just rests. Then track it ..and your 5 lb reel of copper and 900 feet of backing that got spooled!!...you know it's gotta be a trophy salmon and tournament winner cause ya got "spooled"...wait:angry:...i remember that didn't work for me either....Somebody else snagged my rig and it's on another boat now.. I used one of those mylar balloons that said I love you on it, and Ray homed in on that thing fishing in the buff. I just let him have the thing. I didn't want to get tagged by OMGANOTHERSHORTFATBALDONE!..:( -

I think sometimes when a vicious strike comes on a diver when it trips can be hard shock on wire. It seems to take it well so I can't picture how 50 would save a break off when everything else is lighter. Basically you would loose everything but the backing in that sense, not saving anything. I just did calculation for JAG on his reel for him. To use 50 lbs braid @ 900 feet trims 50 feet from copper 45lb. Compared to using same 900 ft of 30lb braid.
