600 ft copper reel
skipper19 replied to dick black's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Just got 1000 ft 32 and 1000 feet 45 blood run. Compared side by side on same size spools. 600 of 32 lb going on a seagate 60 with 900 ft. 30 lb power pro. It will reach 105 to 115 foot depth variables involved. The reel is quick and the 32 is a nice supple wire very friendly to use. You can see it is a smooth player off and on the reel just by looking at it. 450 45 lb. is going on another seagate 60. Whatever reel you choose it will need a minimum of 475 yards of 30 lb mono specs to fit that 45 lb copper. Mark cent frum my notso smart fone -

I'm going to try pinning a surrounding light rag or cloth to my pants leg. Soaked in 98% deet. Or even the ultra shield so it's not on your skin. cent frum my notso smart fone -

Streaking salmon
skipper19 replied to dirtyworm's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Gill is correct! If you see them on your screen they are near your weights not your lures. That's when a lot of times fish coming from deep will see larger items passing by overhead and go to them. Your lures are trailing behind and off the screen. That's when the mupp rig will get noticed with a big flashy wobble spoon on a 4 foot leader 6 to 8 feet above the ball. Non aggressively they will look at it and pass it up and drop down when the small faster action spoon gets the attention going past the shoulder of the fish. Smaller looks easier for the fish to attack. ..and its already there close by. cent frum my notso smart fone -

Streaking salmon

It is baffling no doubt. ..seen it before. I assume you were running wires or junk lines too? Try a mupp set..One larger flashy spoon pinned 8 feet above a smaller spoon on the ball that is same pattern only darker in color on a 25 to 30 foot lead off ball. Meat rig on Twinkie teaser has same effect only with smell. I would try to get rods in at first light, low light cover for salmon that are chilling deep gives them more confidence to feed. Try some glow spoons mupped on riggers like Moonshine carbon 14 and geezer. Top water has been warmer where most bait is but my guess is the feed has been at twilight early. Then chilling deep in low light water levels and metabolism is lower. cent frum my notso smart fone -

I seldom see wide loads on the 90 in mass or ny. You might be better for two things on US 20. THE TOLL IS REDICULOUS!..they will gouge you for extra axels..even wheels! 6 wheelers are charged more than 4 on the same size pickup...then your height over 9 ft gets jacked for more! Check the thru way and mass pike for their "special" rules. In most cases you will not be noticed on roads near the lake. Everyone is used to seeing big boats moving around the asphalt there. I took a 10 foot beam boat down from Watertown to Point Breeze with my pickup. No troubles. Not saying it was legal or recommend this to be done but unless you are stopped in a roadside inspection by DOT...you likely won't be bothered. Check the toll costs and the toll road special rules on loads over 102 inches. Get the permit to be legal for peace of mind. Fuel, permit, tolls might be worth calling a drive away company like the ones that haul new campers from Indiana manufacturers looking for back haul opportunity. cent frum my notso smart fone

I truck all over. I frequently stop at 3 stores in Wisconsin, Illinois (bass pro) ... and Indiana. Cabella has great 18 wheelers parking lot! Bass pro..not so much but a few do..Lincoln Nebraska. .but anyway, you would think that some of the best of trolling gear on the great lakes would be in the stores near lake Michigan. ..not much! I do rate cabelas signature 2 stroke oil highly for quality and price. I also like the outdoors cooking camping dept. I always come out with smoking wood and spices, rubs, brine mixes and gallon jugs of 2 cycle oil at $17 or less on sales! They are good for a variety of intrests but...you want special trolling stuff, stick to your local shops, Nancy, Narby, Captain Cove, Slippery Sinker etc. Places of that nature. I'm not sure you will find a line counter on a reel big enough to hold 450 of blood run. You can mark the copper every 100 with florescent paint or something alternate colors for indication. 45 lb super copper from blood run is .035 diameter. Most folks use 50 lb braid for backing but I have no trouble with 30 lb power pro at .011 diameter. You will have a slight advantage on reel space for the copper. Another alternative is their 32 lb at .030 diameter. The dive curves are very close for both and you can get 150 feet more copper on that reel that will only fit 450 without compromising backing and fear of spooling out!...true it's more line out to bring in but is much easier handling and reaches deeper than a 450 will at full deployment. The Solterra by Okuma is plenty big and fast, also the new Diawa seagate 60...6.1 to 1 gearing is a good choice 149 bucks bare, and the new Penn Squall 50LW 4.1 to 1 gearing but gobs of torque also 149 bucks bare. If you are set with 45 lb blood run you will be a little tight on the Diawa but about 700 feet of 30 lb backing. By calculations, The 32 lb will go 600 feet and 900 backing very tight. In any case the 45 lb 450 ft. copper will need a reel with 30 lb. mono capacity specs of at least 450 yards...475 even better. The Solterra will have no problem as it is like farm equipment. Large and built for coverage. There are others but to stay below 200 bucks bare reel these are content at that level and capable. Mark cent frum my notso smart fone

Good game play Rick! I still think the salmon are feeding night time. Early before, and just at first light..and if you are there, rods in the water you get them in the top column of water..they have been chilling deep in mid day not interested in feeding....but hey..then there are those nice picture fish and they need more attention so....barbecue those chickens! Smiles are showing the appreciation of your effort Rick! cent frum my notso smart fone -
Did you check the suction side of the pump for any air intrusion? Thru hull hose clamps and ball shutoff valve connections, hose to pump and clamps, make sure your inlet filter housing is not cracked or have bad o rings. The gurgle sounds like a vacuum leak going on somewhere. There is the chance that a diaphragm has failed in the pump. There are 4 or 5 of those in the pump depending on the make. Hope this helps! Nice day yesterday for sure Tom! I resisted the temptation to go out after looking at the surface readings from satellite. They were changing drastically! Three different snaps of the surface during the day showed it was going to be a challenge...you have seen the bait! I have hooked more of them in the side than any other time. I wonder how many we don't see in that screen when the cone is looking at 4 feet of bait in that Window under 25 feet of water. Temps seem to be separating the bait from the predators in terms of comfort zone  Thanks for the report..guess it was...for me...a better day to save gas funds for another day! You are correct Vince. Way more alewife this season and there is a veritable buffet everywhere in the lake. This past week has been proof on two trips. One out of golden hill west and out of the Oak 4 days later that covered water 450 ft out and west to Golden Hills. Bait bait bait! Every where! Predators too, but they are hard to entice when they feed when ever they want on that smorgasbord! Top water has been warm to 25 feet. Most fish are in that column and there are some way down deep 70 to 110 feet. I suspect the big marks deep are mature kings and probably fat from night feeding while the sun is down in that warmer upper layer. Diminished light and quiet surface makes them likely to come grab meals at that time...dropping to the chilly water to just rest and lower metabolism. It is transition time no doubt, and we had an easy transition last year that makes this year a tough one to contend with. I hope that the stratification will help stability in the day bite! Maybe when the alewife move deeper where kings are more comfortable during the bright day, we can benefit from a more consistent bite. I see by the surface temps today that a flip of the lake is slowly happening. Let's hope it sets up a predictable thermocline that will last for a while. Mark cent frum my notso smart fone

Same as Tuesday, lots of bait..Large hooks near them and everywhere. Those fish are full of alewife. Gotta be lucky enough to hit the feeding frenzies on all that bait. Way too much bait! Even the steelies were uncooperative. ..they're stuffed! cent frum my notso smart fone
