  1. Nice report Rick! Saw you trolling east, threading the needle between us and another boat inside of us near the flats on Sunday. Great job on getting those finicky fish to bite! We had a slow boat ride all the way from the glass house back to port. Mark Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. Thanks for the report, Shawn, we were out this afternoon 5:30 to dark and there was a great screen out west and 130 to 200 fow, but all fish had lockjaw . Going out tomorrow morning and see if they change their mind. Glad you didn't get run over by an obvious idiot with a big boat on auto pilot. Maybe he should figure out how to use it with a radar interface if he doesn't want to pay attention to the course. Too bad he had to collect 50 dollars worth of terminal tackle and baits to further insult you with his non-grace. I know you did all you could to avoid that confrontation, and that was darn near assault! Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. About the only one you can load and walk away from for 3 or 4 hours are those that automatically drop a wood puck in and are electric. Not usually under the 300 you are looking at. I have both a wood fired side box chargriller, and a luhr jenson big chief electric cabinet that uses electric and a pan of wood chips. If I don't want to babysit the fire I choose the big chief. The wood never gets fire, the electric element controls the heat at even 200, and a pan of wood lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours before having to fill it again, but you can let it go 3 or 4 and just add another pan when you come back. Haven't bought one lately, still have mine from 25 years, but it isn't expensive, they have a couple sizes. Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  6. 225 to 250 is what I do in my charcoal smoker. My big chief electric gets up to about 200. I take fillets off at internal temp of meat at 135. Best moisture and texture so far. Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  8. Wow! The color differences in the salmon this season is something! Specialy the last pic. Seems we have two classes of pre stage fish, offshore and inshore, with the latter being just the checking kind. Definitely a toss up on which to play!..nice work Rick! Even fesses up to eating all the chocolate pudding! LOL!.. Nice fishing Shawn! I can't count how many times a fish was speculation for a massive giant and comes to the net 15lb. foul hooked!...sad it got off after all that..washing lures at all is still better than work. I'll be out there this weekend, I got a boatload coming to visit! Mark Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  15. Thanks for the info on the reels and capacity suggestions John! You are right about the speedy return of line on better reels. I know...I use a Penn 309 for the 600 30 lb and 30 lb backing of power pro. It's slllooowww. And the rod is an 8.5 heavyweight. At least with the 30 lb you can use a smaller reel, and save some bucks there. As far as copper line qualities, I think the blood run is hard to beat. They don't have a 30 lb but do have 32 lb and it is about the same. I have used howies copper and blood run and the blood run is more manageable if and when you get a FUBAR in the copper. Most times you can straighten it all back out and be good to go without fear. Others...not so much...goes in the junk pile if kinks are bad. Think its the tin coating on the outside that helps bloodrun be more tangle resistant and kink resistant. Being on different planes while trolling the different tests at the same time helps avoid a lot of that FUBAR stress. Also driving carefully as mentioned before, calmer waters, and less boat traffic all affect the amount of steering corrections you might do. One thing about turns if you have to turn a 90 degree or more, try to make it so that the inside of the turn is the one with the 45 lb and the outside of the turn is the 30 lb. That way the 45 just drops deeper and the 30 climbs up and the speed changes can get you a strike on either one which is very informative on fish depth and reactions to lure speed. Also the two will never be of a concern to get into each other. Separation of the two is key, and the different poundages will help with that. 16. Dog is doing very well, but I think she is getting too big for the cab!..6 months old and pushing 50 lbs...I think it is a great dane and pitt mix by the pictures I found on the internet. On some hunting forums down there in the south and Georgia, the good ole boys like to cross the two for hog hunting. Apparently this dog was one of a litter and being female probably was too expensive to fix. I found out that it can cost 160 bucks just to take an animal to the pound and leave it, and that is one of the reasons I think there are so many dogs running loose down there. She is getting more managable as time goes on, but for a while we were ready to hand her to some friends if they wanted her!...LOL!Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  17. One 300 in 45lb and one 600 in 30lb. You are correct! Run 600 any length. The 30 lb is a heck of a lot lighter and can go on smaller reels for a 600. Run 300 anyplace if you want to put the backing in a release someplace. Maybe you want to run both at once, they run on different planes and you can put them out together even if ya don't use boards or outriggers. Just like a diver rod, run them off the sides flat out over the water on a 10 foot rod. The 300 can reach any depth too if you want to stack it on a rigger cable with a release on the backing. 60 feet above the ball will get your 300 down to the ball level. No need to add any weight to get it down ...you want 110 feet down, let it out and when you get your rigger ball set with another rod, drop it 60 feet, hook the stacked release on the cable, attach the backing of the copper, drop the whole thing to 110 on the rigger counter and ya got two lures running at 110 down..one is 300 feet behind everything and 50 feet below the surface. It is often not even having to be moved when other lines take fish, especialy steelies since they generally hop around on the surface out of harms way with the copper down there. It's just something I do if I feel that ambitious about hitting deep fish with copper and don't want to reel in 700 feet of line. Mark Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  19. Jack probably has the right diagnosis, not only related to mercury. Fuel lines are generic on remote tanks, and this has caused some trouble on my Yamaha 9.9 as well. It seems especially troublesome with the 4 stroke I think because of the pump gas we get, and the lack of two stroke oil mixed with it that acts as a kind of buffer against ethanol. Pieces of rubber get loose, sometimes just a flap that remains attached inside the hose and acts as a dam against the fuel flow. You can force it through with the primer, but when it has to feed on its own, it will flip and cause the damming effect. Try a different new style hose that is for the ethanol pump gas and see how that works. Make sure no rubber pieces are in the carb needle and seat, make sure you have good O rings on your fuel line connection, make sure your tank is venting, although you have it plumbed to the main tank, there can be a small leak of vacuum in the connection someplace and the engine can loose prime, check or replace the clamps on any connection to the main tank. If it was over heating it would not immediately start back up and there would be no ignition spark. It is a gas flow related problem most likely. 20. The fish God owns whole lake!..and he, upon his will, can and will take your tackle at any given time as payment for fishing his lake!...and that is no threat, just so everyone understands the toll for a troll...LOL! Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. Ah haaa! I will have to read that labelling....farm raised! And dye..thanks Matt, I was pretty sure that food coloring would NOT change color when cooked. I have had some that are a little pink after cooked but not too colorful like the salmon from a restaurant. I find both ocean and lake kings to be comparative in texture but a slight difference in flavor, but it depends largely on how it is prepared. Butter makes everything better!...LOL Mark Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  22. Only question I got, and this is because my guests eating the lake salmon have noted and asked ..."Why is the salmon meat you grilled white?" Meaning they have had restraunt salmon that apparently looks like what I have seen..red/orange or pink. So I have this standard answer..."I don't know, maybe the suppliers use some color enhancing ingredients, like maybe in some beef." After all mine is fresh, unenhanced (if that is a word), and cooked in a couple different favorite ways. The other from the store/restraunt comes from maybe...Alaska, BC, Pacific Ocean it had 7000 miles on it, several loading docks, refrigeration, and wrapped fresh or frozen. It gets cooked in the restraunt and it is still a pinkish orange color after cooked. So what does it mean really? Anybody have a clue? So far my guests take my explanation and run with it...sounds good to them as well as the empty plates are attest to either my cooking or the taste of the salmon...which is a puzzling "white" after cooked. 23. I think there is a certain kind of hormone release when that first king comes on board. Ok ok...I know what y'all are thinkin!.well?...ya just gotta do it agin! Feels good doesn't it!...and ya think about it a lot...way to go ADK! Congrates on yer first one!..each one is just as good a feeling as the first! Mark Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. It's also a kind of judgmental thing. If the battle was long and the king came in the very end just surfing It's likely spent. Using copper or long wire is generally gonna be a dead fish due to longer fights. Rigger hits on spoons not so bad. The hook is a little easier to remove than a tournament style fly next to the boat. But that depends on the height of the freeboard on a boat as whether you use a net. Then the fishes chances are less. Sent from my PC36100 using Lake Ontario United mobile app
