Lots of ways to run the meat. I run mine in a Rhys Davis head 20 to 26 inches behind a protroll e chip flasher. Usually a green or white with pearl on one side. Tweak the head enough to get a 1.5 to 2 roll per second, more of a wider spin than just a twirling on its axis. I set the hook to lay free next to the meat tail. End of the tail just at the bend in the treble. Use the toothpick in the head to jam it there. Some like to use twinkies and some like to dress the meat with a fly skirt. Just depends on the mood of the fish sometime. I like to run the meat on copper, then dipsy, and off the riggers last but sometimes if not useing a copper in the spread just deep on the center rigger. Be patient...it is not one of the quickest producers, but will often get the biggest salmon of the day. It will troll nicely at the speed you run the test of your sets, I have used familiar bite and Erie Dearie with equal success. The roll, or spin of the meat is most critical though. Be sure to get it looking right beside the boat out of the wash and count the roll of the meat twice for each ..."one thousand one, one thousand two" etc etc count. That's what I do but is no means the only way, and it works for me. Mark [ Post made via Android ]

I like the 30 lb on my long coppers over 300 ft. Less winchy feeling on the reel. You can use a much smaller reel too, and that is a plus with smaller people who are not accustomed to big tackle. I have kids and women who are ok with the 600 30 lb...I let my copper go out the first 50 feet free spool, with just my thumb on the side of the spool, no clicker on, and run the boat a little faster troll ...and do not get distracted while spoiling out the first 50 ft....overwrapping birds nest sucks Mark [ Post made via Android ]

How ever long my leader ends up after tying the loop in it (about 20 inches or a couple more)..SWAG estimate..never seen the fish own a ruler Like Carl said enough to retie...when too short, splice on some more with a bloodknot. Front hole front..fin side rear hole. Next...thread side on fly out or in... [ Post made via Android ]

I think the individual strands of coated copper stay wound with each other better than the other brands and make it less prone to kinking and backlash. [ Post made via Android ]

Running Wire & Dipsys off outriggers?
skipper19 replied to mcny's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yup...it's all good till ya get a triple hook up on steelhead!...add a copper down the shoot for extra luck. I even run 8 dipsy....if I wanted to. Two off the outboard downriggers as down outs. At least I had a thought of it, but the fish kept me too busy before I could get that many in the water. Once I did and then nothing happened except washed 11 lures for hours without a hit. Maybe less really is more....Hmmmmm. seems if I can't get all six that I normally run in the water then fishing is pretty good. If I have time to deploy more than that the fishing is slow...and more stuff down there just doesn't do much for the fish and only shows me I am a great organizer of lines and lures....Aw crap there goes everythng now! Steelhead jumping right to left over everything. That's why I bring my friend Lois...she likes untangling stuff for some reason Mark [ Post made via Android ] -
There is a hole for a pin to go in behind the actuator to keep it from moving back and when backing. It is a pain to get out and put the pin in but at some point you will be out to unstrap at the launch. Still if ya gotta backup in other places it is not very convenient though. Just in case

Point Breeze east 8/3
skipper19 replied to skipper19's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Hope it helps to get the fish to stay in the rigger spread for ya. Can't say for sure that it makes the fishing better but it has never turned fish off for sure. At least it lets you see the charge on the cables related to the water chemistry and the boat with its polarity as it sits in the water. My boat typically will read around positive .175 to .260 on the natural setting. Depends on length of cable out and day to day changes in weather and water chemistry. I usually check it when I see fish coming into the riggers and diving away without hitting. I don't worry too much as long as the natural voltage is not negative or close to neural. When I turn some heat on it I go with about 0.600 positive volt on all the cables. Suppose to make the salmon feel comfy. They are very sensitive to electrical magnetics. After all they do use magnetism as guidance from the Earth. Can't hurt but negative voltage I understand is very uncomfortable to a fish in it's sensory lateral line. They can feel the impulse from bait from hundreds of feet away according to scientists. Good luck Koot! Mark -
