Trolling Speed: 2.4 to 2.8 gps Down Speed: Boat Depth: 12 ft Saturday...55 to 75 Sunday Lure Depth: Sunday, 35, 40, 60, wires out 90 and 120 on 3 setting. ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS My daughter and her boyfriend came out with a friend of theirs, Todd, and wanted to get Todd to catch some brown trout. We went Saturday afternoon trying for browns down toward Johnsons. Had a few hits down there in front of the creek mouth but only was a ble to come up with a 13 inch perch on a jointed Rapala. Couple other hits and that was it for that shake down run for this year. We got back to the dock and the DEC survey guys wanted to see what we had so we go over and show them our perch. They were intrested in it for the way we caught it trolling for browns. They also mentioned that no one had brought any browns in that day on their watch. So with that info, we decided to hit deeper water for salmon on Sunday. We arrived at the launch about 11:00 am and much to our dismay the water was looking mighty white out there, but non the less we went out and motored west 5.5 miles against the waves and set up trolling east in 75 fow. 3 riggers with spoons..two wire divers on 3 settings out 90 and 120 pro troll/hammer fly and spinney crinkle glow fly...and a 200 foot copper with spinney and fly. We went for about a 20 minute ride east and had no action until moving shallower to 60 feet then we collected two kings quickly, one on the frog spoon and the other on hammer fly dipsy. Had a rip on the 200 copper but gone, a couple other hits on the riggers with just a bounce and still clipped to the release. The Laker, about 10 lbs, came on the green gator mag down 55 over 64 fow. The green frog took a king about 8 lbs, and the hammer fly on a white pro troll green dot took a king about 15 lbs. Nearly back to port now and the port rigger flys off with a real screamer. My daughter Amanda grabs the rod and just hangs on for a 500 foot blistering run with a king headed for the Niagara. She says "what do I do dad?" I said " just hang on and enjoy" ..wish I had a video cause it was one of the fastest drag rips I can remember. 3 more times the fish ran way off to parts unknown. 30 minutes later she wrestled the monster to the net. 25 lbs and she is pumped! They had to head home this afternoon so we had to wrap up the day at 2:00 pm and headed in straight out in front of port. And then we had barbeque when we got home. Mmmm good. 3. The mods were mostly to the charcoal side with the side fire box in use. One is like mentioned before because the box has way too much heat on the side nearest the side fire box. It is recommended to flip the charcoal cradle over and make the heat go under it more or to hang the cradle from the highest point and wrap it with foil to tunnel the heat and smoke to the other end of the char section. The other mod was to attach a drier vent pipe to the chimney to get the smoke to find a route closer to the cooking grate by extending it to the grill level, thereby helping the smoke linger longer in the cooking area. One other was to place foil made gaskets around the perimeter of the char section to keep the smoke going out the chimney more, since the clamshell design leaks smoke all around. The method of making the charcoal last longer in the fire box is called the minion method of burn. The box is aranged with briquets that are cold in a long condensed line, leaving the end closest to the char side open for about a quarter chimney of hot briquets to go in. Then the cold briquets are made to ignite progressively back towards the draft end makeing the fire last longer and burn slower. The chunks of wood are placed on each side of the line of charcoal, and burn individually as the coals burn back against the draft. I have to try a few smokes in this thing to get the temp and fuel ratios right but it should be fun. I'll give an update soon as I get some goodies to do. So far I have some pork ribs to do but need a day without wind to give it a go. Mark [ Post made via Android ]

  10. Yup, I have the HTC EVO smartphone and use the navionics app. For Lake O. It works fairly well and has the marina info along with shore dinning marine stores, marina info including the phone # to contact most of those featured info screens. Sure has helped to keep me from grinding the paint off my rigger balls when fishing the Niagara bar between the red and green cans ....however a bigger screen than the 4.3 on the phone would be better....hmmmm, the other half has a Acer Iconia pad running Android honeycomb, 10.3 inch screen on that baby too....wonder if she will let me test drive it on the hot rod center console. Maybe some good Bungee cords will be useful. Mark [ Post made via Android ]
  11. I have 6 of the Penn 209 but no copper on them. They are slow like mentioned. Putting 300 feet of 30 lb. Copper on one will be a push, but you might be able to do it. I would recommend 30 lb power pro backing. Also the small line guide on those reels is hard to pass your leader to copper connection through. I have a Penn 309 spooled with 600 ft of 30 lb copper and 300 yds 30 lb power pro and that is very full. Be careful not to get it too full and rub on the guide or the braces. In my own experience with that reel I would not consider it for copper. Not saying it won't work but there are some better choices for that work. However sometimes you got to use what ya got. 12. I have used green grass in my trout creel. Bedded brookies in it with a sprinkle of water and don't let the fish touch together. Worked ok, not sure about heavy fish in a cooler, but lots of crushed ice and bed them in it out of the melt should work. [ Post made via Android ]
  13. Atlantics are white. The grey color of the outside of the lips end before the jaw teeth, then its all white inside Coho have some white in their mouths, kings always are mostly black, but variations occur in the coho and make the mouth color deceiving. Best to go by the spotting on the tail between those two and look at the anal fin. Coho is longer from the body and shorter where attached to the body. King is longer where attached to the body and more tapered close to the body. Which doesn't help much if you don't have one of each in the boat to compare. Spots on an Atlantic are x shaped and sparse compaired to a brown trout. Mark [ Post made via Android ]
  14. Almost always if the gas is running out of the air box then the float needle and seat has a piece of rubber stuck in it and causing it to flood. My 9.9 yamaha four stroke had that happen form stinkin ethanol farce gas. I also had to replace all the low pressure fuel pumps (3) with rubber diaphrams on the yamaha 225 ox66 because of that crap. Use a good ethanol treatment on every fillup and it will stop the problem. Be sure to run the engine with the treatment before storage. Better yet use non ethanol if you can find it. I like the Lucas brand treatments and fuel supplemental additives. Mark [ Post made via Android ]
  15. Sure Ray, I wasn't putting nuttin between the lines, but, I think we could get some fishin time in too, no need to worry about gas unless lobsters cause gas. I always got gas and if'n I don't the boat has it ....or the pipe in the roof of the out house does. Even got a nest fer ya, case ya git tired. It's a long ride from Lyntucky back ta Cornball. Mark [ Post made via Android ]
  16. You are too funny Ray, no lead in this critter. There's no Apple trees around here, oh wait, is that why there is that funny vinegar smell downtown Lyntucky? Most of the hickory got used up fer the hot tub club (sure smells good in the bath but the ouhouse is kindda overpowerin. That's why I bought hickory and didn't get any apple wood cause the backyard neighbor already got a bunch in his yard. Wonder what smoked lobster would be like, you still got sum? 18. image hosting I just got this grill at Lowes, it is the Char Griller trio. Combo gas, charcoal, side fire box, and a side burner. So far I have just cured the grill and cooked a steak and some chicken on the charcoal side. Worked great for that, still need to try the side fire box for some indirect smoking, Texas style. I just picked up some hickory and cherry chunks from Cabelas, and plan on trying some kingsford briquets, or royal oak charcoal for some smoked goodies. I been reading on this grill and it has some good qualities but some folks are doing some mods to it that sound useful. I will be experimenting with it on some pork, beef and of course...SALMON ...I like my little electric luhr jensen smoker but thought I would try this....after all sometimes I need an excuse to play with fire Wonder if anyone on here has experience with this humongous beast...almost 250 lbs Mark [ Post made via Android ] [ Post made via Android ]
  19. Browns Tom!...nice catch Also a good way to tell is the upper back end of the lip extends behind the eye of the brown trout and the upper back end of the lip on the atlantic is more directly under the eye. Mark free picture hosting Close up of the Atlantic Paul did a mount of, shows the eye in relation to the end of the upper lip [ Post made via Android ]
  20. I haven't tried a rub however I would think it would cause a drier product and would not form the pellicle which is the beginning of the carmelization of the sugars and helps preserve the meat. It's just easier to get flavor and moisture throughout the thickness of the meat and for the smoke to penetrate into the meat better with the moisture. I have sprinkled on some different seasoning during the smoke or just before the smoke. Black pepper for a little bite, red chili flakes for more bite. Italian seasoning for a unique taste. Marinades are just a good way to get the base flavor into the meat, for example terriaki with soy and worcestershire. A sweet taste like here with the Apple juice. Hot marinades made with pepper sauces, etc etc. Mark [ Post made via Android ]
