Sandy Creek Shootout
skipper19 replied to keith's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
" I guess i should have just went for one of the copper prizes " Worked for me...culled a 25 lb'r so team skipper could collect on some blood run copper from Captains Cove.....ok ok.. Well that fish just knew I needed something to go home with so it kinda culled itself to lighten my box, 30 ft from the back of the boat after 400 foot run off a downrigger dragging a big doctor spoon in goby color. Any way that just goes to show that even a near last place box could go home with a prize. And the sponsor bag was a big plus ...easily worth the entire event for the fun and good fishing and the goodies. This was fun and thanks to all who run in the background to make it happen. Also for Keith and Scott for helping me sign up in a last minute entry and make team #33 all during their evening Friday fish fry at the restraunt. Bruce at Sandy creek Marina for the fine gasoline at the dock, made my Yammy run great, top speed has increased and engine pulled 200 more rpm than the auto station. Also for useing his personal drive way to turn around in after missing the marina drive (wish it was shorter and had a circle in it to u-turn), but I needed to brush up on my backing skills anyway. Was good fishing but the little ones were really aggressive and grabbing almost anything that went down before the bigger fish had a chance. My team mate Art and I hosted everything except a Laker, and our four rod spread took around 15 fish to the boat and a couple losses including the one that would have cost me the gift certificate from Captains Cove Thanks to everyone who participated in the tourny and It's sponsors for making it happen, and for making it encourage 1st time entrants like me to get the feet wet. Everyone did go home with something ....even me Mark [ Post made via Android ] -

Outrigger question
skipper19 replied to Chromemagnum's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Think of the outriggers as a very long rod ...15 feet...so you could use a 10 foot rod but like I say it would only give you another 5 feet. Yes I use blacks outrigger release and put a twisted loop in the backing to hook onto the clip so I can load the rod to take slack up faster. Run the riggers up about 5 to 8 feet above your T- top and angled back a little. This will keep your copper back and high above your other rigs. I hope you have your halyards long enough so you can anchor to the gunnels and make the rigging to the clip easy. I use adjustable bungees to anchor the halyard to several locations for whatever angle of the rigger poles I want. You can run any length of copper you want, it runs approximately 22 feet down for 100 feet out. I have a 600 foot and a 300 foot. With the 300 foot I let all the copper out if I want to fish a lure at 60 to 70 feet deep. I run the knot at the backing and copper right at the water surface. The 600 foot can run over the clip on the release and you can let out as much as you need. I have run the copper over the clip like this for years and it has had no adverse effect on the wire. I have used a rubber band half hitched to the copper and the loop over the clip just so I feel like it is protecting the wire some If you try to run dipsy off the riggers be sure you hold the dipsy above the water as you run the rigger halyard out to the end otherwise you will not be able to get the clip out to the end with the dipsy dragging in the water. Just run the mono or braid over the clip with no twist loop so you can drop it once the clip reaches the end of the rigger. You will be able to deploy dipsys from the side of the boat to run in gunnels rod holders, even with the copper out on the riggers if you keep them high and back. Outriggers are very handy and have many uses. I like my Taco riggers, they are plenty strong. Mark [ Post made via Android ] -
Outrigger question
skipper19 replied to Chromemagnum's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
First off if you have a ten foot dipsy rod you won't gain much by having outriggers for running a dipsy. A short rod of 8 feet would be ok. Most outriggers for boats of less than 26 feet are of the 15 foot variety. I run only mono or braid with the outriggers. Wire can work, but you will be in danger of kinking the wire as it passes over the release clip.. Your rod should be in a holder as close to the rigger halyard as possible BEHIND the rigger to minimize angle of the line to the release and the subsequent slack to be taken up upon the release on a strike. You would need very stiff outriggers to haul a dipsy at it's very end. Taco makes the ones I use and are very ridged. I have run the mag dipsey on them but usually they are the next size smaller I use and set them on 3 setting to fly high and wide. The riggers are more useful for flatlining or you can run full copper wire out and hook the release clip to the backing. I like to run my copper off them angled back and high to keep clear of the other sets of dipsy and downriggers. Mark [ Post made via Android ] -
12 miles offshore, trolling with a full compliment of gear out, a very natural looking fishing boat, far from view to many. Along comes a fast boat and pulls right up to your side and they brandish weapons to force you out of your boat or worse so they can comandeer it and continue on their intended operation of destruction and mayhem. Unload whatever nasty things of attack into your fishing boat and then go blend in.... Pirates so to speak. That's what could happen so don't expect the law to not check your boat out in the US waters. Now how do you protect yourself and your boat and possibly crew from this? Would you carry a firearm of course legally, and stored safely in a hold somewhere on board? Would you be risking an arrest for the possesion of a defensive weapon? What would some say about that? Just wondering, maybe Pete or Matt could weigh in on this ...again just a for instance and how would this look to law enforcement on the open water. Mark [ Post made via Android ]

Shake down trip Sandy 7/5
skipper19 replied to Gene Shenk's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Nice post keep that 11 year old close and enjoy the fun of teaching him what grandpa taught you when you were a youngster. It's great to see the generations come and enjoy the simple pleasures of quiet times and stories told. Your dad will live on in him through your experiences with him. I know because I have done that with my son and sometimes I think my dad is in there somewhere, just by hearing some of the old sayings my dad had that my son picked up from me. It's uncanny to say the least, and it always makes me stop and look at him as if I just recieved a blast from the past. He looks at me and says "what?" , I just say "ya know I've heard that somewhere before" and smile. He says granpa . Now he is 24 and its hard to get the time we used to have. Enjoy those youngins as long and as often that you can. Tight lines Gene, and fish hard and often. Thanks for the report and sharing. Mark [ Post made via Android ] -

7/2 & & 7/3 at the Oak w/ pics
skipper19 replied to chowder's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Andy, glad to see you decided on the Oak Looks like you got into them pretty good. Nice pics of your trip, and happy boys Wish I could have got down there to fish. I was actually home for the weekend due to plant closings, but the Yamaha needed some work and then the other half was on me to get the camper ready for a trip to the ADK's in a week, so I was busy and only got to come down to the North for a dinner Saturday nite. My balls were black, and they seemed to work ok like that, but then the outer skin came off and they became exposed and they still work ok but the one on the port side that is lower than the other is a little colder to handle coming from the deeper columns of water. That's all I have noticed. [ Post made via Android ]

<<"Isn't that what the fisherman were doing ? Left US port , went through Can. water than back to a US port.">> Exactly what I was thinking. Trolling is NOT stopping, not heading for a Canadian landing, and going in transit from us port to us port.....fishing in Canadian waters is the only thing happening. License necessary for that, and carry USA credentials for identity if stopped. Jeeeze you would think the Canadian govt would love us more now that we have a FLAMING liberal in the Oval Office [ Post made via Android ]

Trolling with a fish on - advice needed
skipper19 replied to TyeeTanic's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Fish on... Slow down when ya got The fish tired...don't rush it to to back of the boat , keep him back away from the other lines until all the wild thrashing is over. If the fish is a king and screaming line off you got time to do stuff with the throttle and other rods just by leaving the rod in the holder and let him peel line for a few hundred feet. When ya got the fish coming in , predetermine which side of the boat you are going to net on. Then start to move rods away from the side you are netting and give the steering a tweek towards the side you are netting. Not too much just a slight turn to keep the fish on the side you are netting. I prefer a side of boat net job rather than back of boat but that is preference to your particular setup on the boat. Now if ya got a monster king on and there is little control, it would be best to clear lines and bring up the rigger cables. [ Post made via Android ] -
$ 1000 = 20 Canadian fishing licences Yeah and 162 bass competitors not buying Canadian Licenses = $8100 lost too...haaaaa! Guess that means 8 more of us to get pumped in the rump for them to make it up....NEXT!...not me [ Post made via Android ]

So they think that Anderson was the only incident ....guess we better send a link of these posts on here to Schumer and the media reports. It still does not warrant a fine without the warning first. No intent to actually enforce these rules and then suddenly start fineing people is still extortion on the grounds of a threat of seizure of property or else. Mark [ Post made via Android ]

. Was a little hard talking myself into buying it.Took almost ten min! That's not bad, I been tryin to talk all my friends into helping with the price. I keep tellin them how many more fish we will get with it and they tell me any more fish in the boat and this will feel more like a job and have less time for b/s and beer [ Post made via Android ]
