Issue with DR probe twisting line
dukhnter8 replied to dukhnter8's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Yeah was thinking there was a good current when I was fishing. I am using blacks release which is below the probe. I have thought about putting a release on the line above the probe next time I have to take some line off to get back to coated cable. Been using the blacks releases for a few years, but first year with the probe and never had this issue before. -
Wondered if anyone else has this problem. I was fishing Erie out of Dunkirk Sunday, I went to trip the release and check things but found the line was tangled around the probe and cable. This is the first time I have had this issue, I tried letting it down slower and that seemed to help. I am using a torpedo from Troutman. I did have another line twist pretty bad on the other downrigger but think that was a issue with the harness I switched to as I didn't have issue with any other harnesses. The first time I checked and brought it up to untangle the line from the probe I had a nice laker on that I managed to land. Any thoughts or ideas besides slowing down lowering the rigger? Thanks

Not sure about up on Lake O but at Dunkirk, they get you when you get back in. They keep a list of license plate numbers when they get there if people have launched earlier.

Found a computer repair place that would solder it, they got it done in less than a day and hooked it back up. It seems to be working fine now, jiggled the wires and no issues as of yet. We'll see how it works this weekend after trailering and wave activity. But definitely seemed like the pins moving was the issue. The bad part was that it didn't work last weekend when we were camping and fishing in the 1000 islands and now I see the gas gauge is bouncing on E. I didn't realize it was that low and am glad I didn't go out more while up there without getting gas.

From what I understand this change is from the hunter input, but I'm not sure if it's from the 7000 person survey that was sent out or meeting input. If they really want to reduce numbers they need to do the earn a buck, where you get a tag for either fun loving and if you shoot a doe you get another tag but as soon as you shoot a buck you don't get any more tags.

So I took apart the dash and found the pins on the circuit board are loose causing the issue. Does anyone know where I might be able to get it soldered, I would try it myself but don't trust my fat hands.
-
I did chase the wires and the issue is one in the connector behind the dashboard, when wiggled and moved in the connector the dash works. So that maybe the ground I'll try the new connector and hope that works. Thanks

They look clean with no corrosion so I guess like you both said it is the wire. Where do think the best place to get the connectors would be?

Anybody have any advice for tightening up the 8 pin connector with female and male ends that goes to the dashboard? I have a 01 StarCraft superfisherman that the dash board (gas gauge, dash lights, and volt meter) do not work unless you pull/wiggle the wires. It's getting annoying as I like to see how much gas I have. I have tried dielectric grease, pinching the connectors and trying to pry the pins wider but nothing seems to work. Thanks

70d's I wish, my wife gets cold easily, when it's mid 60d's she is dressed like the Michelin man. Sent from my XT907 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Yeah was out Friday and thermocline was gone. The other day when I dropped the probe deeper and the temp dropped I was thinking about it then the light bulb went off as to what I was looking at. This is my first year with the probe. Sent from my XT907 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Anybody have any tips for the Wellesley island area for fishing. looking for panfish, pike and bass maybe walleye. going camping there Thursday through Sunday next week and looking for any tips. I have a 17 ft superfisherman with riggers and bow mount trolling motor. Looking for what to use, crabs minnows, etc. I have lots of tackle but also will have friends that don't fish much and a couple kids. Would just like to get some fish. TIA Sent from my XT907 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Didn't realize what I was looking at when I first dropped the probe down, then it dawned on me after I left so numbers might not be exact. First year with the probe so still learning. I will be out tomorrow and see/report what I find. This time with better knowledge of what I'm looking at.

Stereo, battery life, and solar panel questions...

I have a small 5 amp panel for sale if you're interested. Give it to you for cheap, let me know. Sent from my XT907 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
I found a thermocline in 50 ft water, this last Saturday off buffalo. Went from 60 something degrees to mid fifties at the bottom Sent from my XT907 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Also depends on where your out of. Lots of times you can fish the west end when the east is a wash tub and vice versa.
-
I should add my speed was at the probe, sog varied from 2-3 mph as we were out Saturday fighting the wind.
-
Speed for new has been 1.5-2, heard black and purple were good not sure what blade types. We got 4 Saturday on renosky and raps in blue of riggers Sent from my XT907 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I do similar when I fish alone and my buddy does the same even when fishing with other people. I don't have the Ipilot but have autopilot. I get the kicker going then turn on autopilot then get the speed I want. It helps a lot when setting rods, fighting fish and netting fish. There has been lots of talk about this subject here. I think many guys do the same. No other tricks I can add but that I do this on both Erie and Ontario so it is a big water technique as well. It can get hairy when combat trolling but still can work if open enough.

I know Silver lake marine let me try them out on Silver lake a few years ago. I launched and went over to their dock/parts dept and they came out with a couple props. We put one on tried it until I found the best one.

smart troll vs fish hawk
dukhnter8 replied to Hooked on Kings's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
One thing I will say about the DR I got on the new to me boat last fall is that, so far, it has put me in the magic trolling speed for walleye this year. Yes it is a tool but without it I would have been way slower or faster depending on the winds and currents. I have been watching the SOG on my GPS and the DR speed is anywhere from 1-2 mph off. If I was just following the GPS speed I feel I would not be in the magic speeds. I have been learning to deal with the coated cable and if buying a new one I would go with a fishhawk or the smarttroll for sure. -
