Every boat should have an oar aboard which helps with the final docking.

If you don’t have a downspeed, consider trolling North/South and look at the bend in your dipsy rods. -
Much to learn young skywalker. You need to learn the business side. You need to learn how to talk to people i.e. smooze clientele, even though you don't have a thing in common with them. You need to learn basic boat maintenance in order to keep your rig fishing and not canceling charters. Marine mechanics don't just drop what they are doing just because you have clients coming the next day. You need to learn how to network (without offending). You need to have all your fishing and safety gear. You need to have insurance. You should have a slip- home base. You need to learn how to deal with drunk obnoxious smokers on your boat. You need to know what to do when a client starts turning green and goes quiet. You need to have probably 120 charters to break even. You need to have the patience of Job to deal with late arriving clients or clients that keep dropping fish. You need to deal with clients who cancel last minute. You need to keep in touch with past clients for repeat business. Last but not least........you need to learn how to catch fish in an East wind!

With a dead battery your VHF will not work. I would say today with gps tracking, a cell phone is more important. If you had to abandon ship, you can take your cell with you. I have the local coast guard number in my contacts. If you go to the compass feature on your phone, it will give your gps coordinates.

The lake is loaded with nutrients right now. I was surprised how green the spring water was despite the cold water. This year’s weather reminds me of weather in the late 80’s. We were fishing kings up at Burt Dam around September 10th with the leaves already turning color back then. I would definitely plan for early runs on the tribs this year. With the Niagara still in the high 50’s my buddy is still catching tons of steelhead with his centerpin. Maybe we get a Niagara run this year??

The first-in copper and last-out copper, keep your thumb on the spool to keep it from backlashing. If you have to go over a dipsy then let the copper settle a couple of minutes down the middle before sending it wide -to allow for it to rise. Using a mag dipsy will lessen the chances of the two getting together due to steeper dive curve. Use spoons while learning as flashers make a mess.

Happens for two reasons in my estimation and experience. One, letting out dipsy too fast. Two, a small fish hit and spun it or three....a fish hit and ran forward causing the dipsy to roll onto itself. The most logical is the third option as I don't have this happen to slide divers.

Flat lining w/spoons
Gill-T replied to Reel Chaos's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Main line to a barrel swivel- leave a long tag line on knot to attach the split shot. This way the split shot is not crimping on the main line weakening it and if you snag bottom the splits will slide off. Leader coming from the barrel is equal to length from rod tip to the reel (to clip onto for storage). Termination is a duolock swivel snap. -

If you have not been running a DW glow two-face in mag or super slim you have been missing fish.

Town of Seward has a accessible small tributary on the opposite side of the bay from town. You can wade out into the water and cast vibrax spinners (orange treble dressing) or Cleos for pinks and silvers. Go down in the evening. All along the coast the tribs are loaded with salmon, dolly varden and grayling. Don’t fish the tribs near towns. Park you car and hike upstream to find water to yourself. Gear to bring is a spinning rod for hucking lures, a fly rod, streamers, egg patterns, and dry flies for grayling and white fish. You can catch Sole off the mouths of tribs by fishing skein chunks on bottom rigs. Make sure you check regs. Every stream has individual regs. Some are closed.

Fluorocarbon just called ..........and it wants you to use it appropriately. -
I have tried trolling with a cat’s asz and the little bugger would hang onto the swim platform for a little while then just give up. I will stick with my discontinued Subtroll.

PM Jerry Felluca on this site. He traditionally has run two probes at the same time (subtroll and Fishhawk) and probably has the differential. I have a subtroll and have noticed that my buddies fishhawk shows a faster speed. When comparing spoon action at the boat, 2.25 mph subtroll seems like 2.7 mph fishhawk. The difference could be calibration testing between units during fabrication or perhaps the units are not measuring the same thing knots-per-hour vs miles-per-hour? In the end you fall back on the speed that works for reproducibility so you need to adjust your view to your new view on speed shown on the fishhawk.
