Rollie, the DEC has based it's Alewife census on Lake Ontario based on the same trolling transects that were used when the census began....in 1975? FACT meaning they are running the exact same GPS/loran coordinates year after year for population comparison. FACT The food web has changed in the great lakes due to invasive species negative effects. FACT The food web in Lake Ontario is more concentrated in the Niagara flow due to the Eutrophic water coming from Lake Erie. FACT The majority of Alewife are concentrated in the band of productive "green water" flowing along the south shore for most of the year. FACT By following traditional netting transects, the DEC/FWS/OMNR have been underestimating the population of Alewife in Lake Ontario because they are spending too much time netting in water without alewives for much of the season. FACT After bringing this matter to the attention to Steve LaPan/DEC and FWS employees at the state-of-the-lake meeting this spring they stated on the record they had to remain true to the original netting transects. FACT After the meeting concluded, I spoke to a few officials and off the record they agreed the lake has changed and the trolling census was not as reflective of the alewife population today. FACT Fish are not making it to maturity as shown by historically poor numbers caught off the piers, in the rivers. FACT The DEC are reactive and not proactive. FACT We aim to change that. FACT

October is always so friekin' windy so I think the heavier arrows will resist drift more. Going to use my Grim Reaper expandables on my 500 gr. arrows for windy days and use the slicktrick fixed for wind 12 mph or less. Common sense approach that will deliver the best compromise between accuracy and penetration. Now just have to keep the little gremlin off my shoulder that whispers in my ear that says "shoot quick.....he is getting away" LOL.

Creating a fishery in which the DEC recommends you DO NOT consume any Lake Trout over 25" due to toxins. The amusing thing is the DEC has tried all different types Lake Trout strains in an attempt to find the best strain to survive and repopulate Lake Ontario. Sorry, in my mind if you change the strain.....it is no different in theory than stocking any of the introduced salmon species.

There is a negative relationship with alewife/sawbelly species and perch. The higher perch numbers are reflective of lower sawbelly numbers. They compete for the same food.

I am not sure if wildlife officials could ever prove that the presence of too much bait would cause small jacks to run and spawn. I have caught 18" 1 or 2 yr old kings in the two-heart which flows into Lake Superior which is bait poor. I CAN tell you that if you continue to strip eggs and milt from these jacks you increase the likelihood that the progeny created will also develop early. It should be hatchery policy to not use jacks for egg or milt take. -
Remember....don't lubricate the shaft (insert joke here).

How do I catch trout and salmon on smaller inland lakes?

For Lakers try a low-tech approach with a three-way swivel a heavy drop weight and bounce bottom trolling below 2 mph. -

Sounds like you need to tighten the allen nut on the rod so it doesn't collapse as easy. Sometimes under pressure of heavy waves the bar extends out to far and you loose steering in one direction. When this happens just push the motor over by hand to reset the bar.

They have expanded considerably since reintroduction and protection. There was some thought that they may open them up to trapping this year but it was shot down. They are nasty killers. They kill Raccoons (talk about a loud fight!), porcupines, squirrels, rabbits, Pine Martens.....anything they can catch and kill. I am sure they do a number on Turkey and Grouse eggs also.
