  1. I thought I would post this in the hopes that somebody saw something last night. My boat is parked next to the entrance to Boat Doctors. The motor was stolen at some point after the time I left my rig at around 7pm. They cut the swim platform to remove the lock and chain. Pretty heavy motor so might have needed two people. Looks like they used a sawzaw if I had to guess.
  2. I think you guys will find success on those patterns on Erie also. Not only does the pattern look "goby-esque" but I have been finding Johnny Darters in the stomachs of perch and walleye last year on Erie fish. Johnny Darters look like a cross between a goby and a sculpin.
  3. It looks like the temps will below freezing from 12 am Friday night and won't rise above freezing until 8 am. What is everyone's opinion on if we should be worried about our blocks/thermostats freezing and cracking?
  4. Glen I have settled on removing the lead as others have stated then joined improved cinch knots. I wrap the backing or the leader twice around the leadcore sheath before tying. Get both knots started then crank the knots down on the final push together. Tie a little overhand knot in the tag ends of the braid and leadcore then melt down the tag to the knot to stop fraying of the tag. Been using it for two years now.
  5. 30lb mono with a light leader. The heavy mono floats the bait up higher.
  6. A torpedo-style weight will do fine as a probe rigger at 12 lbs.
  7. I took a king off a mag dipsy yesterday that was only out 44' over water depths in the 40' range. Just figure 2:1 ratio with a mag dipsy and 3:1 with a standard. If you tap bottom, bring it in, dust off the zebras and readjust your setback.
  8. I can confirm there are some kings mixed in. Shoreline bite was tough yesterday. Fish were hitting only when the wind changes happened. Like someone flipped a switch. I never seen Lake O get nasty so quick yesterday....it was like I was on Lake Erie.
  9. No not a pretty part of town........hope you are still married.
  10. Agreed! If you have problems with the unit you can drive it to their location in Buffalo and they can test it while you wait. Takes 5 minutes + they have all the parts on site such as coated cable spools.
  11. The Dingell-Johnson Sport Fish Restoration Act was designed to collect taxes on hunting and fishing equipment to be placed in a trust and used for conservation and expansion/support of sport fishing. In reviewing the amounts given to each state there appears to be a large discrepancy. Alaska sells 618,384 fishing and hunting licenses and receives $17,904,350 in annual grants California sells 2,056,748 fishing and hunting licenses and receives $17,904350 New York sells 1,538,400 fishing and hunting licenses and receives $ 9,810,510 Based on these figures of usage of the natural resources as represented by license sales......we are underfunded compared to Alaska and California. If the state is looking for money for a new hatchery I would say that money is out there if you know how to ask for it.
  12. As far I can tell they are in breach of their contract. Hurry up already its freezing downtown! http://www.buffalonews.com/city-region/communities/still-too-much-ice-on-lake-erie-to-remove-ice-boom-20150414
  13. LIGHT N or NW winds will pin the warm water tight to the bank making fishing VERY easy.
  14. Pre-spawn staging salmon often school-stack vertically so fish at the top of the spawn swarm will often end up at the top of the water column. Underwater footage of salmon in Alaska show this "chasing" pre-spawn meet-and-greet that happens before the fish move into the pier heads. Can be truly maddening looking at a graph stacked from top to bottom with hooks and not have them biting! I come across these spawn-balls west of Wilson with fish getting ready to run the Niagara.
  15. Its called the East-wind blues.
  16. Usually done with sticks come May 1st. By then I am all spoons. Baits like Dreamweaver SS would be an excellent bet for browns. I run a lot of Northport nailers also.
  17. To update: Letters have gone out to various state government employees and we have begun to hear back. There are people from this site that have stepped up and its working. We still need people from Jefferson, Cayuga and Orleans county residents represented so please step forward if you can. PM me your address and I will send you the form letters to send to your county representatives. Thanks.
  18. Congrats on launching your battleship. Hopefully you and the fleet of charters have a bountiful and safe season! I hope to be on the water this weekend.
  19. I have been on the docks in the UP Michigan to buy whitefish from fishermen bringing in their days catch. They net these fish when they come into shallow water to spawn in October-November. The bi-catch in the gill nets included smallmouth, kings, steelhead, etc. etc. Canada can keep their nets!
  20. They are stocking bloater chubs now. Take a look at the different whitefish species as they all kind of look alike.
  21. Breaks in the coated cable can cause this. A bad sending antenna or the cable that plugs into the back of the display are also causes. Call Moor in Buffalo. You may have to send the unit to them to diagnose the problem. Rarely is it the probe.
  22. Bring the boards and fish leadcore off them.
