Can't blame Tim for the blood bath. Funny thou. Dave tried his bow hook as a gill holder and it had a different effect......4 buckets of water later the deck was clean again.
This is Tim Bromund. Tim likes fishing. Today he caught a 31 lb salmon while on my boat . Utilizing the intel gleamed from fishing on my boat today....... Tim will be fishing aboard his 24' Thompson tomorrow in the same area......while I will be scraping my house siding. Tim loves having other boat traffic around to gage trolling speed so everyone should look for him on the water. He will be in approx. 180' FOW and fishing 60-115' down with flashers and flies.
If you troll real close to him he might be able to show you how to properly bleed a fish or how to break dance/spinning on his back while going for a rigger rod that just fired .
I have a bunch of those hybrid spoon/plugs. They are a slow moving presentation I use for lakers. They look good behind a dodger. You catchin' kings at king-speed on them?
I am not starting a pissing match over which board is better. I know full well how strong amish boards pull. If I was running an erie charter on a calm day...I would be running those type boards. However, for every day use in all types of waves and weather......give me orange funny looking foam.
Tony, there is a reason almost all the top tournament boats on Lake O use otter boats......they work. Like anything there are some variables that will effect performance. Height of mast, string lengths, dual keels set at correct angle, etc.
Not interesting, and grumpy.
Could be they are waiting for the next derbys entrance fees to come in to cover the payout......like the construction business.
Remember if you are downrigging for suspended fish with stickbaits you have to consider how deep the lure dives.....you don't want to be below the fish.
I got away from tourney ties because of August King teeth.....check the short segment between hooks as that is the weak link. Breaks are going to occur when the treble buries in the corner of the mouth and the short segment of leader between hooks lays over the teeth and saws back and forth during battle. Also make sure to check the eye of the single hook is closed tight and there is no way for the knot to slip into the gap and chaffe. Knock on wood.....single treble with 4 large protective beads and I have not had a break-off to date.
I replaced the handles after the first time I used them.....6 years ago. Reels still working as leadcore reels. The handle replacements were stainless T-handles....and I think Okuma might of actually referred me to Tuna back then. I will also add the line counters on convectors are CRAP.
Olcottfishing.com All the links you need are at the top of the page. Click on surface currents icon. Click on the Temp transects option for lake O summer-time conditions or the surface temps option for springtime fishing conditions.
If you are over a school and you run out of bait.....use perch eyes. Old timer hard-core perchers use hand lines with multiple spreader rigs with perch eyes.
I would be concerned with the stresses the dipsy would exact on the lead core over time. Go to bloodruntackle.com and you can pull accurate depths achieved by the various delivery methods ie. copper, wire line, lead core. Most fishing this time of year is at depths 60' or deeper. Even a full-core of lead is only going to get you down 40' trolling into current. With a mag sized dipsy on wire line or braid, you can get down to 115' levels.
Easier connection termination is to strip off some insulation coating and use the wire line knot. Less drag...more stealth...less expensive....and stronger.
I have the ugly stick dipsy rods with roller tip which cuts them off. For fireline braid divers you can use the surface tension of the surface water to pull them off by using a whip-up-down motion with the rod. For braid downrigger cable I just run it thru my fingers. For 30lb mono rigger line you can use whip technique as well.
