You don't generally run a dippy off lead core. This time of year just put out your dipsy. Save lead core for spring.

Official Sodus Pro Am Results

Put me on the list for next year Rod. Thanks for keeping this great venue alive. -
Experience, knowledge, information, fishing reports, species to target, weather, water temps, time of year .......all these things to factor so you will not get one answer. That is the attraction of Lake O.....the learning part. Just when you think you have her figured out, she will throw you a curve ball. If you are new to the game, pay attention to this site, become an observer for tournaments, take some charters..........and enjoy the ride.

Flashers pulling spoons?
Gill-T replied to BALLS DEEP's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Adam, I am using 30 lb green big game mono for leader. As stated the hits are violent and have had lesser mono break at the hit. When you see underwater footage of steelhead hitting the trailing bait off a flasher, it is like they are a little spooked by paddle and charge in with a fast swipe-and-run maneuver. As steelhead go deeper in the summer try blues for colors. -
King Slammin olcott 7-23 live

Looks like the warm water pushed out and east with the shore tore open with cold water inside. Head deeper. -

65 degree water is no problem to a brown. Most don't fish shallow enough for summer browns. I would find where the thermocline meets the bottom.....then use that as your outside border and fish water shallower to that point of reference. Don't be afraid to put something right on the bottom.

Flashers pulling spoons?
Gill-T replied to BALLS DEEP's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Some of the biggest steelhead I have caught have come on a flasher and spoon. I run longer leads...like 4' to the spoon. Usually a small thin spoon with a treble. Smaller sized R&R spoons, DW SS, or Smaller sized northport nailers. The strikes are always violent!!! -
Olcott in the am
Gill-T replied to gamekilr's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Fished this afternoon early evening. The lake is Fu$ked up from storms last night. Super warm water on inside. You have to get out beyond 220' to get into good temps and to get out of the trash/weeds/floating crap line near 200' There are WICKED currents down there now. The down current runs from a SE to a NW direction. Spent most of the day untangling dipsys, copper and rigger lines from the crazy currents and debris. The good news is there is a good graph waiting for you with some nice kings around. Head out past the trash line to 300 FOW and troll back into the current in a SE direction to keep all your line straight out the back. Temps are 52 degrees down 100' right now. Flasher fly bite. Bait is showing 80' down to 140' on the graph with most hooks in the 100-120' region. -
The Curse of Sodus

I don't think anyone is going to be able to predict the weather this weekend. When I look at the radar loop one instance there is nothing....then a few hours later there are flare-ups popping up all over the great lakes. Picked up boat last night and you could see large anvil clouds forming over the lake just east of Olcott. Any of these flare-ups could cause problems. -

Best site to find water temperature?
Gill-T replied to BALLS DEEP's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Out of Oswego, you could use either the "c" or "d" page depending how you leave port east or west. These are "general" readings so don't get too crazy with specifics. The thermocline will occur somewhere within the yellow color which should give you a starting point where to put your riggers. Depends also what species you are targeting. You want browns or steelhead, fish the yellow band and higher. Kings and lakers, fish yellow level and lower into the green band. -
Best site to find water temperature?
Gill-T replied to BALLS DEEP's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I rarely use the overhead temp site because as noted by others it gives satellite infared readings so if there is cloud cover the info is junk. Instead I follow the temp transects page on coastwatch for lake O. http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs.php?lake=o&ext=vwt&type=N&hr=00 The readings are given in meters so multiple by 3 to get feet. During the summer you could almost perfectly translate the thermocline on the graph to the conditions on the water. Comes in REAL handy when an east wind blows things around and you have to decide where to go out of port east-west-north. The data on this page is based on buoy data. -

Received the news Jennifer's body was found by Maid of the Mist. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and concerns. -
Attention Niagara River charter boat captains

The 23 year old boy from Amherst was found at the devils hole/power vista area yesterday. It took three days for the body to go from point of entry at whirlpool to devils hole. Jennifer went over the falls later in the evening at 10 pm so my guess she is up higher in the river still. -

Thanks Vince. -
As you probably have heard there have been a couple of people lost to the Niagara. The 37 year old female that went over the falls is my brother's sister-in-law. The family is quite distraught over not having her body back for closure. I spent this afternoon hiking the gorge looking for her. I became apparent to me with all the rain we had the last two months that the Niagara is RAGING and it would not take long to shoot the body down towards the lake. Any charters running out of Lewiston or Youngstown PLEASE be on the look out for the two bodies that went missing over the weekend. Anything that looks like fabric or large floating objects please give a closer look. THANK YOU.

AM or PM fishing.....some observation in 2013
Gill-T replied to reelintense's topic in Open Lake Discussion
As much as I enjoy a sunrise, getting up real early and then feeling like crap until nap time is not the way I like to roll. Fishing on Lake O has always been better for me for size of fish on afternoon/evening trips. I think a good degree of feeding occurs at night and then there is a hangover. Life is too short to be miserable....sleep in. -
July fishing has set-up on the south shore for kings. The picture inside the Niagara flow is fantastic with bait and hooks where they are suppose to be. Water temps have normalized as I got my first traditional summer-time "after fishing....and beer swim" off the swim platform. Temps are around 52 degrees at 80' down. The verticle temp break occurs just outside of 250' FOW. Last night we fished just west of olcott in 160-220' plying waters from 80-100' down. We ran a two man six rod spread with flashers/flies on wire divers, two riggers, an eight color with musky torpedo and a copper with a musky torpedo. All rods took hits on kings. Biggest was 26 lbs. Lost a giant on the copper that straightened an owner hook after a long battle. Whole fight is on video so I can relive my agony. Oh yea.....take your bug spray!!!
