What is everyones BEST spring setup for browns look like?
Gill-T replied to Outcast189's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Two or three lines per side off Otter Boats. Two downrigger lines. One chute 1.5 color leadcore, one flat line. Line running close to bank has 30 lb mainline with 15 lb leader to keep bait off bottom. Spoons off boards have one or two split shot. Like Capt Werner, sticks on shore-side, spoons on the lake-side, and then let the fish determine the flavor of the day. To allow your spoons to run at slow stickbait speed, chose a thin spoon blank over a heavy and consider changing from a treble to a siawash single hook. -
Breakin' in my new gun dog so grouse hunting mostly during the early season. When it is warm....deer hunt lazy. Bucks will sleep in late so be in your stand by 9 am to hunt til 1:00, watch football, then be out again for the last hour of light. Good luck, hunt safe.

Don't even get me started about the clowns that wear full brown Carhart.

Mature Natural Fish From The West End
Gill-T replied to Sweet Caroline's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Eighteen mile (Olcott) has very little nat. reprod. due to pollution. Oak Orchard probably puts out naturals. The X-factor is the Niagara. With warm lake Erie water coming down most of the fall, conditions would favor a late run of Kings when water temps are lower in order for nat. reprod. to occur. Sampling the Niagara for smolts would prove very difficult due to the depth and currents. Despite lack of proof.....my bet is on the Niagara. -
You would probably making the same facial expression if you just tried to swallow a sunfish whole with those prickley fins.

I never like the idea of hunters with full camo in the woods the same time as gun hunters.

Acorns galore on the lease near Salamanca. No Beech, no apples. Good year to put in a late season food plot.

Tom, you have proven you can run a tournament......any chance you could follow Kevin Jerge's lead with the KOTL and run the eastern events the way the majority want? -

Figured the hens were out a little deeper yet. All small males off the pier Sat. morning. Plenty of fish around the piers now. See you in the spring Tim. -
ANYONE WANNA SEE A "SENECA CHALLENGE"?
Gill-T replied to lakebound88's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Instead of killing a bunch of fish, why not try something unique. A C&R tournament based on total length of all fish caught. A photograph or video of the fish caught next to a tournament pin that is given out on the day of the tournament. No observers. Just a thought. -
Thanks John. Like fishing erie just don't like weeding small fish off the lines so I thought a mixed bag program for Lakers, Browns, Walleyes, and Steelhead with lures might be more fun. Brocton Shoal sounds like the spot.

How do I get to Brocton Shoal? Out of Barcelona and hang a right? How far? http://www.fws.gov/midwest/fisheries/GL ... 8-G021.pdf

Early Bucks love those transition strips of golden rod and brush. First places you see rubs, esp. if you got some sumac around.

No problems for now, but there also doesn't seem to be a lot of rain in the forecast either. -
This time of year offshore for sure........but this year is different. Can't put my finger on it but there is something amiss with the offshore steelhead fishery this year. Usually, you can run out past 400' FOW find a debris line and be almost guaranteed a nice box of fish. This year the Steelhead are scattered all over the place and skinny. I am on the West end of the lake so it might be different on the East end?

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9-12-12 Time on Water:2:00 pm- sundown Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated:1 Species Breakdown: Hot Lure: Trolling Speed: Down Speed: Boat Depth: Lure Depth: ==================== Decided to let the lake settle down after the washing machine Sat. for one more kick at the can. Upon arriving at the launch I discovered a ghost town. There were a few groups coming in with LONG faces and similar stories of slow fishing. I had a father and son on the boat today that had never been to Lake O, and I had to get them on some fish so off I jet out of port to deep water, trolling out to 515'. Great screen if you like looking at bait.....but no real hooks around. We took a steelhead 225' back on a FL/fly mag dipsy and one more hit and miss. At 5:30 I decided to pull and run in to try a crack at some kings. Found a small pod of fish in 88' FOW just east of the microwave and had one tussle with major that got off at the boat, but that was it. The newbie 12 year old on the rod had some issues when the King decided to charge the boat AAAgh.....I so wanted that kid to catch his first king. Oh well. I end a great season with a crapper.....makes it easier to put the boat to bed for the season. It has been the best season ever with zero skunks and a lot of happy fishermen aboard. Can't wait to start on next years huge crop of 4 year olds. ====================

Keep the drag light on the wire. No stretch will rip hooks out easier.
-
You might have been a tad late this year. Kings bodies are 1-2 weeks ahead in deterioration and the water is just getting warmer by the day. Keep your chin up, this is big game hunting.....often hit or miss. I had a bad feeling about this weekend so I decided to work on some hunting blinds instead. Come back in October, November and chase the huge three year old class of kings. Launches should remain ice-free late this year.

When given the option of a boring troll around and hope to get 1 walleye/hour with no fight on heavy tackle vs dropping a light action rig to the bottom and hook up instantly on 15" perch that pull drag.......no contest right now. Gas money saved and yummy fillets aquired by the bucketfull.....win, win.

Perch off the Catt. is unreal right now. 65' FOW. All pigs. Find the pack of boats and go to the outside. Interesting enough they are spitting up baby smelt, gobies and Zebra Mussels. Salted minnows worked.
