If you are going to go with Big Jon, get the brute model to handle the heavier weights required for todays fishing. Both Cannon and Scotty high speed models handle heavy weights as well. Nice features offered by all models. Big john has less plastic, good pulley design, a tip-up feature which is nice on the center rigger for netting fish, and strong well made rod holders. Scotty has a track record for reliability, a clutch lever release system which is faster for lowering your ball while not draining battery power. Most don't like the plastic rod holders of Scotty. Cannons have the most advanced rod holders, but I have never been a fan of their pully systems. As you can see there are pros and cons to each. They all work fine. The important issue is picking the right model to handle the size of the weights you want to run.
I am planning on hunting on state land this weekend for grouse and I have to admit I am a little apprehensive. I am spending some money on an orange vest for my dog as a precaution This is not the answer to the license sales delima. When I was a kid I was excited about any type of opening day....I certainly didn't need a "special" day. The problem of shrinking sales goes much deeper than a date on the calendar.
Two years in a row my top two spoons were Northport Nailer Blue Mahi Glow, and a mag Luhr Jenson Shoehorn spoon customized. Don't think I washed a spoon past July 1st.
Two or three lines per side off Otter Boats. Two downrigger lines. One chute 1.5 color leadcore, one flat line. Line running close to bank has 30 lb mainline with 15 lb leader to keep bait off bottom. Spoons off boards have one or two split shot. Like Capt Werner, sticks on shore-side, spoons on the lake-side, and then let the fish determine the flavor of the day. To allow your spoons to run at slow stickbait speed, chose a thin spoon blank over a heavy and consider changing from a treble to a siawash single hook.
Breakin' in my new gun dog so grouse hunting mostly during the early season. When it is warm....deer hunt lazy. Bucks will sleep in late so be in your stand by 9 am to hunt til 1:00, watch football, then be out again for the last hour of light. Good luck, hunt safe.
Eighteen mile (Olcott) has very little nat. reprod. due to pollution. Oak Orchard probably puts out naturals. The X-factor is the Niagara. With warm lake Erie water coming down most of the fall, conditions would favor a late run of Kings when water temps are lower in order for nat. reprod. to occur. Sampling the Niagara for smolts would prove very difficult due to the depth and currents. Despite lack of proof.....my bet is on the Niagara.
Tom, you have proven you can run a tournament......any chance you could follow Kevin Jerge's lead with the KOTL and run the eastern events the way the majority want?
Figured the hens were out a little deeper yet. All small males off the pier Sat. morning. Plenty of fish around the piers now. See you in the spring Tim.
