  1. Often these are made on logging roads with no available branches overhead. I assume you know the difference between a scrape and turkey scratching. Just another piece of the puzzle that defines buck travel. Look around....is there a rubline nearby?............. more scrapes?.......home base for a doe group?.....Time to set up trail cameras to see if it is a worthwhile area. Many scrapes such as those at the edges of fields, are a waste to hunt because they are visited at night. Better to find those deep woods scrapes esp. near small gaps/openings. These little didies are like a firehydrant to a dog and are visited year after year serving as "scent posting" spots.
  2. Looks like he had a "bad antler day". Probably sleeps on his right side.
  3. The oldtimers on Erie use hand lines with multiple hooks. Emerald shiners are King on Erie, but if the graph is full below the boat, the perch guys pull out the eyes of the fish they caught and use them. Boat control is key. Anchors, drift bags, electric trolling motors etc. Best to stay vertical over the fish.
  4. Congrats......but put some orange on that kid!
  5. Fixed blades all the way. Thunderhead 100 grain..... widely offered so easy to find replacement blades. I pulled a foster-type 12 ga. slug from a front shoulder.....it went in 2"......couldn't figure out why the deer did not go down with the first shot. At the wrong angle it does not matter what you use for a broadhead.
  6. Mark, I know you are new to the area.....you are finding out WNY has a year'round world class fishery. Your boat is perfect to take advantage of the "off-season" fishery. You could spend the rest of your days in discovery of all there is to offer.
  7. Most of the rubbing activity (esp. near edges) occurs at night so your set-up sounds like you are where the deer are after hours not during shooting light. I would get deeper into the thickest part of the cover you are hunting (quietly). Use grunts when you see or hear a deer that is going in a direction away from your stand in an attempt to turn the deer towards you. I would not sit up in your stand grunting away.
  8. Can we get a deal like you did with your new boat?
  9. Buddies trail cam a couple of days ago.......I'd say the chase is on.
  10. The shale/gas ain't going anywhere........make sure you can get it out safe and then do it.

  13. Trust them as far as you can throw them!!!!!! http://www.syracuse.com/have-you-heard/ ... osing.html http://www.wayneindependent.com/news/x4 ... -chemicals http://wri.eas.cornell.edu/gas_wells_waste.html
  14. Retrace his steps and hopefully you will find his rubline. Set up somewhere else on his trail.
  15. The only problem with umbrella rigs is the additional weight and drag, plus the hassles of trying to net the fish with all that stuff waiting to get snagged in the net. Tried them.....don't like them.
  16. Like Al Gore, I thought I invented these but they probably originated a long time ago on Lake Champlain. There are lots of varieties out there. Don't care for the model Tim mentioned---too much blow back. Luhr Jenson ( I believe) came up with the "six pack" with silver metal fish shaped attractors. Captain Werner "Popeye Charters" run them. Captain Lapiano (spelling?) has various designs on his site. I use simple beads, crimps and Cannon terminations. How you arrange the blades and what colors is up to you to have fun with. The top two sample pictures utilizes components from Big Weenies "grease traps". The bottom example is just a simple bead/crimp/90lb wire extension with blades. All are strung on downrigger cable and use a Black's release. These I use when I am fishing alone and have limited rods to run......they pull fish from a long way. I also use these when my daughters are on board in the middle of the day because they catch smaller sized kings, coho and steelhead when the sun is high.....running a spoon with a 5'-7' lead off the release. They take big Kings in the evening......running a spoon with a approx. 10' lead off the release. Now that the three rod rule has passed, I use these a lot less. On the bottom with a jointed stickbait....they catch lakers in the spring also.
  17. Of all the walleyes I have caught in Chaut. over the years.......I still don't know what they eat. I NEVER find stuff in their stomach. Not sure if their metabolism is super high or if they just don't have to eat much. Your pattern should continue thru November. I have never been able to catch many walleyes during the day on Chaut. lake. The time I have caught them in the day was trolling the main deep holes in the northern section or as a front was coming in and the lake was whipped into whitecaps. Find yourself at the mouth of a incoming ditch or creek and toss stickbaits at night.....works spring AND fall.
  18. Thoughts and prayers to your family Jerry.
  19. October is THE best time to rattle. As soon as the November chasing begins......the rattlin' antlers stay at home...don't want to spook the does. Rattling works better for me in DEEP woods areas where there are less competing noises to leave no doubt it is two bucks fighting.
  20. Stop your blubbering......we will be out smaking Lakers in March before you know it.
  21. West Marine will have the 5 gallon plastic reservoir to hold marine antifreeze. Power up your engine with the earmuffs on running water to heat up the engine so the thermostat opens up. Take off the flame-arrester on the top of the engine block. Hook up the earmuffs to the reservoir tank, open the valve. Turn on engine and allow the antifreeze to run into the block. When the antifreeze is getting low in tank, pry open the baffles on the carbeurator and spray fogging oil into the engine so it sputters. If the engine dies from the fogging....good you are done. Change your outdrive gear oil per your owners' manual. I change the engine oil, gas filter and spark plugs in the spring. Add gas additive. Remove your batteries, charge them and check them every two months for recharging. Others could expand on this list.
  22. No, that is our latest pitching prospect.......he has a cannon for an arm. Go Yanks!
  23. Matt, I concur with Rod......great fishing platform. You may want to post on GLA website, as Michigan has a lot of Cherokee fans.
  24. Ray, I try to match the trolling gear to the people fishing in my boat. I break out the barbie poles for kids and gnome-sized adults.
  25. Great story!!! Keep in mind.....if you had missed you could have taken a mulligan.
