  1. Your observations are on the money, esp. the part on the fish evolving to run later. To bring the runs back to better support the bank fishery, the DEC should consider only stripping eggs and sperm from late October-November fish and increase the allotment going to pen-rearing. If the DEC is afraid of too much natural reproduction happening, stocking more fish into the streams that cannot support natural reproduction due to warm water temps and poor substrate, would help keep natural reproduction down while supporting the fisheries around the lake. I don't like the DEC's stance that two pen-reared fish equal one direct stocked because of better survival rate. There was not enough study time and data to support the 2:1 theory as fact. The DEC does read these posts so keep the good conversation going.
  2. The Atlantic Salmon program has ZERO effect on the Lake Ontario fishery and the economies of the ports around the lake, therefore, you have had ZERO net effect on the lake. BTW, saying hello to biologists at State-of-the Lake meetings does not constitute “working” with them. To call out and question Capt Vince’s credibility is just plain stupid. Keep in your lane.....stream fishing for that one Atlantic per year you catch.
  3. Now that is a buck!!
  4. I think the idea “Salty 13” is that the fish are NOT imprinted on the salmon river.
  5. Guys might go up to the mountains days in advance to set up remote camps and scout. Bad cell service areas means they may not have gotten word. I love the southern tier woods after three feet dumps. I have the place to myself.
  6. Big fish have moved in onto humps. Try inshore.
  7. Hopefully, hunters out in the mountains of Montana get out safe. I am sure there will be people stranded. Three feet of snow......
  8. Yes, I believe that is correct Brian. 2016 was a warm year of weather hence the record alewife year class.
  9. Too hot. Can’t even think about hunting right now.
  10. Great video. Was that a Anchovy vs Rocket face-off ??
  11. A pen-reared harbor fish going nowhere by the looks of the surroundings.
  12. I would put your tree stand there. Signed Captain Obvious
  13. Put it on your neighbors boat. The dead fish game is fun. Ask the kid in the dorm room below me in college. He is still trying figuring out why his room smells like Oswegatchie perch.
  14. Kings have darkened up quite a bit already
  15. Congrats on coaxing a four year old 30 lb fish to bite this late in the game!
  16. Great weekend to be on the water
  17. Water temp will be same as water temp off Buffalo. A word on flow. Be advised the water level starts rising around 8:45 am as the power authority has to allow for water going over the falls for sightseers. If you are out on a rock, you may get stranded and/or die. The power of the water is no joke and all the rocks are slick as hell.
  18. I am assuming that with your handle WNYfishingfolks, WNY stands for Western New York? Lower Niagara is usually best in October for Kings. See that Lucky, gave facts with no saltiness.
  19. Lucky, as a self-reported steelhead and Atlantic salmon fisherman, would you include yourself in this indictment that all trib anglers are flossers? As A fly fisherman, I can tell you a swung fly under slight tension is the most efficient flossing tool out there. Chances are you have recognized the nuance of a fairly fished dead drift or an upstream streamer presentation that has very little chance of snagging fish. If you except that these methods as fair practice, then you have to recognize that egg fishermen can catch fish without flossing. The whole center pin revolution is based on a true dead drifted bait.
  20. I have heard of this occurring with frequency from highanus up to Maine. My brother had a striper trip canceled due to “weather” and it turned out to be a calm day.
  21. You won't need face paint with that rash.
  22. I don’t think you can count on gentle forecasts the rest of the year. If you want to fish, and you can do it safely, then you better do it. You don’t have to go out very far this time of year.
  23. Keep in mind stomach contents are just a snapshot. Orange meat might be just as likely coming from smelt ingesting invasive blood red mysis down deep as it is from mussel-eating gobies (keratin)
