  1. I wonder if that is my problem, too. I have been using a Purolator oil filter. I've seen the MerCruiser filter and noticed it wasn't as long as the Purolator. I just changed the oil in the fall before winterizing the boat. Maybe I'll also try the Merc filter if the manual pressure test that Hank suggested I do doesn't change things. Good point, fish-on!!!
  2. Hank, I was actually thinking about doing a pressure test at the engine after I originally posted to rule out the sending unit and/or the gauge. Good advice! I thought about changing to a different grade oil, but my manual specifically calls for the 25W-40, so feel I should stick with it, unless anyone feels it isn't necessary. The engine sees a lot of trolling time, especially when the winds come around and the kicker can't hold course anymore.
  3. I'll take a look at them, as well. I was also considering the Carlisles that are USA made. Less expensive than the Marathons, too. My boating store has a huge inventory of the Load Star K550 tires, too, at about half the price of the Marathons. The dealer told me they're made in Korea, but are an excellent tire. Sure he was trying to get me to buy a set to lower his inventory on them. My trailer uses the ST175/80R13, load range C.
  4. My trailer is going to need new tires. I have the Goodyear Marathons on now and have been very happy with them. I know they are now made in China and have not been getting very favorable reviews since the change. I was in my boating store this weekend and they have (4) of my size Marathons on the shelf with the Made in USA on the sidewall. I was going to get them, but the sidewall DOT markings say they were made in 3/09. Should I be concerned with the tires being over 2 years old already and using them? I know typically trailer tires last 5 years. Input?
  5. My Islander has the 4.3L MerCruiser with about 225 hours on her (new engine in 2005). My question relates to the oil pressure. When the engine is running, the oil pressure stays the same on the in-dash gauge, around 80psi. It doesn't change between idle or full throttle. I know the pressure shouldn't stay the same throughout the RPM range, should it? The engine purrs like a kitten, doesn't overheat, so I know it's getting oil. Any ideas about the steady pressure and what it should be through the RPM range? The wire is connected to the oil pressure switch on the engine and to the back of the gauge in the dash. I'm using the MerCruiser 25W-40 oil.
  6. I agree with FX's comments. I learned it all on my own, talking to other fishermen at the launch, looking at other boats, and researching the tactics. That was almost 20 years ago, and the act of trolling comes naturally to me now, although within about 2-3 years after starting to learn the process, I had it down pretty well. There are also seminars given by charter captains throughout the year which are very beneficial. Lots of information on here and online. Also, look at charter and product websites, like A-TOM-MIK. Many will give tips on what to use and where to target the salmon throughout the season.
  7. Nice looking fish! Great job, guys!!
  8. My old boat had a 75hp Evinrude that threw a rod. I searched high and low for someone reputable to handle my older O/B and ended up at Bersani's Marine in Cicero. I dropped the boat off Sunday evening on my way home to PA. Monday morning, they called me at 9am with the diagnosis, cost and down time. He promised me he'd have it ready to go by that Friday so I wouldn't miss any derby time that weekend. Thursday morning at 10am, they called to say it was done. They ended up doing A LOT of work to that outboard, yet gave me a huge deal on all the parts and labor. Bored the cylinders, new pistons, connecting rods, used crank, cleaned and tuned all (3) carbs, plus a lot more. I know there are a lot of places capable of doing the work, but if you're near Cicero, I highly recommend Bersani's for Johnson & Evinrude work.
  9. Another vote for the 22 footer. I've been out in a 19 footer in some pretty snotty weather and will never go backwards. Had my Islander 221 in 4-5 footers last year after a storm came out of nowhere and I never felt unsafe or fear we wouldn't make it back to port. Very solid and secure-feeling boat.
  10. Number saved to my contacts, as well. Thanks for the info.
  11. Now, that's a brown!!! Wow, nice job!!!
  12. While I have never had to use a repair facility at the lake (knock on wood), I have heard good things about Mike's Marina on the Little Salmon River.
  13. Just to keep up on the ongoing happenings, I received the following email, as did everyone who is a part of the Great Lakes Wind Truth forum, from Tom Marks, the Executive Officer of the Great Lakes Wind Truth New York division. ******************************* I am sending you this meeting announcement below in case you would like to attend. I feel it will be very pro wind and supportive of the Great Lake Offshore Wind project however we need to have a presence at the meeting to ask the tough questions. How can wind energy be green if it replaces nothing? Has no capacity value, can not supply base load or peak load power, will kill millions of birds, will use oil in the transmission cases which has to be changed and disposed of and possibly leak, depends upon rare earth materials neodymium magnets only available from China (energy independence?)....ect .. etc.... We won in Erie County now we have to become more visible in our campaign, we are far from victory. Thank you, Thomas Marks, Exec Director Great Lakes Wind Truth, New York ; '>http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?llr=urpqh5dab&v=001o1NWE3yaJ-q_nQC2qpNklOikgoH6mCyANfayEfciPXgh9ZAyUimRlzZhrSW_mmfZYc6B6up8FUFyEPvF6_HXOfLz8W9tMhpj0Jtw1NHahwC04usqQyvE5Q%3D%3D>;
  14. I'd love to fish the western end in the spring to take part in the whole Wilson & Oak area, but not feasible for us. I picked Oswego overall.
  15. I have one as a backup, as well. I have a Standard Horizon and, while it is fairly basic, it does a nice job. As mentioned above, their range isn't great, but in an emergency, I wouldn't want to be without one. Last fall, I was on shore talking to a friend who was on the water. He was about 1/2 mile out from shore and we were talking like we were next to each other. Weather conditions will affect your range, as well. Definitely worth the expense to have one, in my opinion, even if you never have to use it.
  16. Here's some pics of my (4) Cannons on the back of my Islander.
  17. I have been running the Eagle Claw SF-400A rods for close to 10 years now and love them! I have (6) of them on the boat and use a combination of the older Daiwa SG-47LC and the newer LCA reels on them. I also use a pair of them for my leadcore setups. Dipseys I am using the Daiwa Heartland rods.
  18. I'll post pics of my Islander's set-up tonight when I get home. I run (4) Cannons.
  19. Nice fish!!! Makes me itch that much more to get the boat out of storage, get her ready for the season and tow her north.
  20. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family for a speedy recovery!

When you say "locally", where are you located?
  22. I was there Sunday instead of Saturday this year. Excellent seminars from both Ron and Pete. Both were willing to answer questions and give plenty of tips. Nice job, Captains!!
  23. Thanks for that excellent information, Tim.
  24. That can be good and bad. Along the eastern shore last year, we dealt with waves coming in closer to our breakwall during the larger storms. The Labor Day storm was absolutely incredible. Since getting the house in 2003, I don't think I have ever seen the waves hit our wall like they were that weekend. And, to see the Salmon River lighthouse disappear as wave after wave broke on the stone wall and went OVER the lighthouse was an incredible sight.
