That is great news! Bet he knew you went fishing and that was his way of saying "I'll be out there with you again soon!"

Great video, Jeff. Always a good thing when the kids have smiles on their faces.

I am in the same boat as you and have been looking for a bit now. After much research and suggestions, I found a new Raymarine DS500x complete with 50/200 transducer for $260 at Bethel Marine. Well under your price range and an incredible unit. The unit has been discontinued by Raymarine, but it has all the modern and high quality features I'd be looking for in a fishfinder.

I, actually, gave myself a Christmas present already. Saw a new Raymarine fishfinder on sale at a price I knew wouldn't last long, so I got it already. As for other things, well, let's see.....

Has Been, I understand your views here, as we do need to somehow focus on alternative power and energy ideas. I am in no way opposed to windfarms to generate power. I actually was amazed at the farm in Lowville when I drove up to see it for the first time. There is a set of windmills on top of a hill in Bear Creek, PA, able to be seen from the Northeast Extension, which I look forward to seeing every time I make my 5 hour drive to and from the lake. These farms are in areas which do not affect normal day to day activities. The proposed windfarms for Lake Ontario WILL affect our fishery and the sport we have all come to enjoy. The issue with these farms isn't having them in the water, but WHERE they plan to install them. The preliminary proposal is for them to be installed in the 150 FOW area - prime fishing areas during the season. Do you think we will be allowed to fish anywhere near these turbines? No way! It will be just like the 9-Mile Point nuke plant was after 9/11 - restricted zones. What about the power transmission lines? The lines will have to be run underwater. Downrigger balls often track very close to the bottom of the lake where these lines will be run. Just in Mexico Bay alone, they are proposing 560 of these turbines. That is like taking the entire Lowville farm and putting it in the water where hundreds of thousands of boats troll during the fishing season. Think about the annual fishing derbies and tournaments on the lake and how they will be affected. On another aspect of this, as a property owner along Mexico Bay, I know how far out 150 FOW is from shore. I have been coming to the lake and enjoying my time there since I was a child. My family has always had property along the shores of Mexico Bay. 6 years ago, I had the opportunity to purchase a waterfront home along Mexico Bay. I have come to enjoy the sunsets, the peace and quiet and the serenity the view offers. I refuse to look out over the water, just offshore, and see an entire farm of windmills spinning. No way! Property values will go down, people will sell their homes, taxes will go up (already proven in other areas as valid consequences of windfarms offshore near homes). As I said above, I am not against windfarms to help generate power. I am against having them installed where I will see them ALL the time when I look out over the water and where myself and thousands of other avid fishermen spend their lazy days of summer. If this project goes through, we may as well all sell our boats, because we will not be able to use them anymore where we use them now. You may tell us to just move to another location to fish, but when you are talking about 560 turbines in one area alone, where do you go? Another thought on these turbines. I have found out that the power generated by these turbines will NOT be used to power the area they inhabit. All power will be transferred downstate. I have an issue with that. If downstate needs more power and windfarms are the answer, there are plenty of places downstate to put windfarms, such as on top of mountains or uninhabited hills. Ok, I'm done...for now.

Ok, here is the latest from my end. Everyone needs to listen up! I have received countless Emails the past few days regarding this "project" from representatives from Oswego County. They are all aware of this proposed windfarm, and the majority appears to be opposed to this going through. Jefferson County has already started the process to adopt a resolution which will be sent to the PSC should this project be given the go-ahead. It has been suggested that Oswego County do the same. Nothing has been mentioned about the other Counties that may be affected by these proposed windfarms. Below is a section of an email I received from an Oswego County representative: ****************************************************** With regard to the impact of the sportfishing industry on the Oswego County economy, I believe that I have as good or better understanding of that than most people and work nearly every day to help support and promote it. If there where to be a proposal for Lake Ontario that met with opposition from that group we would certainly be behind them 100%. To date, not one person working in that sector has expressed an opinion to me on this issue so if there is some opposition to the concept of an offshore wind farm that you are aware of, please ask those people to contact me. Email is fine but signed letters are better as they can later be introduced as evidence of support or opposition in the officially established public processes for projects like this. I hope you will continue to keep me apprized of your interest and concerns and I look forward to working with you and others on this or any project as we work together to grow and protect the Oswego County economy. Dave ************************************************************ This email was from Mr. David Turner, the Director for the Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning. That being said, he is waiting to hear from us and needs our input and thoughts in order to have any ground to stand on when this project is presented. While this email came from an Oswego County representative, Mr. Turner seems very open to hearing from anyone who is concerned, for whatever reason, with this windfarm going through. Even if you do not fish in Oswego County, write to the address below with your concerns and displeasure. Mr. Turner said he will accept either emails or letters, however, he said he will have more evidence of opposition if he has letters to show. So, long story short, get those fingers typing or your hands writing soon! Do it while we have his attention and is still willing to listen! His contact info is as follows: David R. Turner, Director Oswego County Department of Community Development, Tourism and Planning 46 E. Bridge Street Oswego, NY 13126 Ph. (315) 349-8292 Fax (315) 349-8279 [email protected]

I just received an Email from my neighbor at the lakehouse, who, in turn, has been in touch with the Oswego County legislator, Mr. Shawn Doyle. Shawn is well aware of this proposed windfarm project and has already begun the necessary actions to prevent this from going through. For those of you who either live in Oswego County or fish in Oswego County, we need to contact Shawn, as well as the state and local representatives and express our feelings about this. In addition, Jefferson County has already established a site for their end of this "project". Visit jeffersonleaningleft.blogspot.com and read what they are doing. If I get anymore info, I will post it here.

I actually had 2 which were productive. Michigan Stinger's green NBK and a Michael Jackson. I really don't think it is connected to his death, but in the fall, the MJ did really well with the browns.

We definitely need to keep an eye on this. 560 turbines alone in Mexico Bay - that's almost like putting the entire wind farm in Lowville out in the water. I have a good friend who is monitoring this, as well. He has a lot of contacts in Oswego County and is getting some updates on this. I'll post whatever he uncovers regarding this.

I'll have to give Beth a call. I heard about a local shop in the Mexico and Texas area that did custom canvas work. I think I was informed they are around the Rt3 & 104 split. Perhaps the same shop? I agree Chinook's deal is hard to beat. That section of PA is quite a haul for me. Would take me longer to get there from home than from home to the lake. The Amish do very nice work and are extremely detail oriented. I live about an hour from Lancaster, PA. I know of a shop there which does custom exhaust systems. Friend of mine got a full stainless true-dual system on his Suburban, including stainless tips, for $250.

I am in the same situation as you. I've been given quite a few locations which do top notch work. Where are you located?

I have a tandem axle trailer for the boat and was wondering if anyone does or suggests rotating the tires similar to you would with your car or truck. The trailer sees maybe a total of 800 miles a year. It gets towed 6hrs to the lake in the spring, 6hrs home to PA in the fall, and just the 10 mile trips to the launch during the season. The tires aren't wearing oddly and there is nothing peculiar forcing me to ask the question. Just curious if anyone does this or if it is a recommended practice for tandems. Thanks.

There is a chance the software may be out of date and needs to be updated. I had a similar issue a few years back with my GPS unit. It worked fine the first season, but the second season at first power-up, it couldn't connect or find any satellites. Ended up the software was outdated. I had to send the unit in to have the software loaded, but they had it back to me in a week.

I'll also say long-shaft is the way to go. I have a short-shaft on my Islander which does very well when the lake is calm & up to about 1' rollers. Anything above that and the prop does come out of the water momentarily when the bow noses down and the stern is up.

Try to also use a cleaning cloth or towel that will not scratch the vinyl, too.

I'll also vote for Port Lodge in Pulaksi. I stayed there awhile back and the rooms were very nice & comfortable. Plenty of parking, too.

Laptop computer used for weather monitoring duties
Misty IV replied to Misty IV's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Thanks for all the relpies and various input. I wouldn't be solely purchasing an aircard just for tracking the weather while on the boat. It is something I would use on a day to day basis for work and down-time at the lakehouse when I cannot get out on the boat because of weather. The kids have been bugging me to do something so they can go to their favorite websites and to be able to check their mail while we're up for the weekend. I've thought about the various conditions I'd encounter while on the water while trying to decide if this is something I want to do (ie. sun, damp conditions, getting banged around, etc). I realize that NOAA and the USCG give advance warning of approaching severe weather. I'm the kind of guy who likes visual aids. I like to see where the storm is, how fast it's moving, and whether it is coming directly at me or if it's going to pass me by. So many times, I've seen it getting dark west of Oswego, heard that a storm is approaching, and pack it up to run in, only to get back to the launch and realize the storm completely missed us. I don't know. Maybe I'm asking for too much. I'd love to have a full-bore radar on the boat, but as a weekend warrior, I (and the misses) cannot justify the cost, and we're looking for a way to see the storms and bad weather visually. I thought with all the options on the web available dealing with weather, the laptop may be an easy way to do it, since I already own one and would just have to buy the aircard. Still in the decision process here. But, please keep thoughts and ideas coming. Thanks! -
Laptop computer used for weather monitoring duties
Misty IV replied to Misty IV's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Mark, Excellent info. Thanks for the reply. When the Sirius weather came out, I was really interested in getting it, but then felt I may never get the full usage out of it, being a weekend-only fisherman. I kinda put the whole thought process on the back burner over the winter, but with the 2009 season underway, the idea appeared again. My brother has a Sprint broadband card for his work-issued laptop, and he uses it all the time. One of the modems I'm considering has the capability of storing data, too, and thought this may be an added benefit on the water. Thanks again for the reply and info. Definitely the type of input I'm looking for. -
I fish Mexico Bay, Nine Mile & Oswego areas. I have the advantage of being able to look out my front window to see what the lake is doing, but, I agree that those forecasts aren't always accurate. I was up 2 weekends ago to open the house for the season, and, while Saturday's forecast was right on, Sunday's was nowhere close to being accurate. Nearshore was calling for light winds of 5mph or less with waves under 1 foot. Hmmm, where did those 15mph winds and 2-3's come from?

This is something I've been pondering about and finally decided to throw it out there for comment. I also posted this on another fishing website, looking for input, but most of the replies were from fishermen on Lake Michigan - need input from Lake Ontario. As a weekend warrior fisherman, a full-bore radar system for my boat is out of the question right now. I'd like to have the capability to monitor the weather while out on the water with visual aids, in addition to how I currently monitor via the VHF radio. I've looked into the Sirius weather system as an add-on to my current Sirius subscription, but came up with another idea. Has anyone taken their laptop computer out on the water and used it to keep track of weather? Obviously, I'd need a broadband modem to access the web while offshore, but this is something I could use at the house, as well. I use WeatherBug a lot, but open to other weather monitoring websites. I have a Sprint phone and was considering getting the Sprint card, but I know Verizon, AT&T and others have broadband cards out there, too. The monthly rate for the broadband service is kinda pricey, but I'd be using the card for more than just trips on the water. It'd get its use elsewhere, for sure. Anyone tried this and what type of results have you had? Looking for good and bad. My Sprint phone has good reception up to around 10 miles offshore before it starts getting sporadic signal so guessing a broadband card would be about the same. Thanks for any input!

I typically trailer from the house to the launch and launch to house with the top up on my 221 Islander. It's only a 5 mile ride and I usually don't go over 45mph. The top has held up for that short duration. However, when I tow the boat over the highway, I always lower the bimini and remove the side windows. I saw a bimini get destroyed once when a guy was towing his boat down I-81. The top was wobbling all around and finally, the canvas gave up the fight. Felt sorry for the guy.

Mexico Bay Sunday 4/26
Misty IV replied to unkeljim's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Nice job! Glad you managed to get into a few. I was up opening the house this weekend and had to watch the boats trolling by all day long. Saw a few hook-up right in front of the house which made me jealous. Oh well. Be up in a few weeks with the boat in tow. Hopefully have my shakedown run Memorial Day weekend. -
Not exactly sure what you are asking. I have the RC425 GPS/Chartplotter on my boat and it needs the external GPS antenna to do GPS features. Excellent unit.

I agree it's worth the extra time spent to remove all the electronics. I always have and never had to worry about an issue in the spring. My dad once forgot to take out his depthfinder before winter storage - he never forgot again. It was done come spring...or frosted, as mentioned above.
