Thanks for that great info. The units I'm looking at are the echoMAP 73dv and the echoMAP 74dv. Only difference is the preloaded maps (BlueChart or LakeVu). If I can manage it and go with Garmin, may do the 9" screen with the 93sv

That's good to know about the new units coming out. I'm interested in seeing them. I like the features Garmin offers on their units for what I need. I don't want the high-end features, but also don't want to go super-basic either. Their mid-range plotters are just about perfect. I'm also looking at the offerings from Raymarine, Furuno, Humminbird and Standard Horizon.

I'm in the market for a new chartplotter and exploring all the options. While looking at Garmin's offerings, I see they have the BlueChart g2 and the LakeVu maps available. I've tried to find any information on these (2) offerings and which would be best suited for Lake Ontario's eastern and southern shores. I'm not having much luck. The units with the BlueChart maps are a bit more expensive. Anyone able to shed some light on this for me? I'm not set on Garmin but I tried one of their display units at my local West Marine and really liked what I saw. Thanks in advance!

I had the same thing happening on my Sub-Troll. I ended up finding the antenna spring which sends the signal to the head was not fully attached under the heat shrink. I ended up replacing the entire antenna with the Scotty 1211 Contact Sleeve assembly and haven't had any odd or strange issues since. My readings from 150' down also improved and became more stable.

Interesting. Yes, I just found the sleeve on Fish307 without any cable. My antenna wire snapped off right at the heat shrink on the cable end and I don't have a lot of wire available to splice into. Thanks for the tip and info that that sleeve is available as a separate item. Sent from my XT1060 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

The antenna for my Moor Sub-Troll snapped off and obviously need to replace it. I'm talking about the part that looks like a spring through which the downrigger cable runs. While on Moor's website, I saw they offer a "special" antenna which looks like a metal tube, through which the cable runs, and this attaches to the downrigger boom with wire ties. This seems much sturdier than the spring assembly and wanted to see if anyone has upgraded to this type of antenna and what your thoughts are on it before I make a decision. Thanks!

I took the side cover off and everything looks fine. I did a continuity check of the switch, and I'm getting continuity at the top and bottom terminals when the switch is in the respective location. Am I looking at a circuit board now? They are the Mag10HS. Sent from my XT1060 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

This morning, all was fine with my Cannon Mag-10 downriggers, as it's been all week. For some reason suddenly, my one unit now will not send the ball down with the motor, the motor isn't engaging. I can free-spool it down and the rigger will lift the weight back up fine, it just won't lower it. If, while the weight is being retrieved and I hit the button down to stop the retrieve, the motor will stop. It seems the switch is working, but the "down" function isn't. Any tips on where I can look before taking it to a repair facility? Thanks! Sent from my XT1060 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Manual Downrigger Weight Capacity
Misty IV replied to overthelimit's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I ran 12lb balls on my manuals and didn't have any issues. I had the Cannon Uni-Trolls and would extend the booms most of the time, but always would watch the tip for excessive bounce, especially in rough seas. As for cable length, I had 200' of cable on each spool which worked fine...most of the time. When I upgraded to my electric Cannons, one of the first things I did was swap to 400' of cable on each spool. In years past, I've had the balls down to almost the 200' mark, but taking into consideration the blowback, I'd have needed more than the 200' to reach 200'. The 400' cables are relatively inexpensive, too. -
Cannon vs Big Jon
Misty IV replied to ben schroo's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I can't comment on the Mag-5s, but I love my Mag-10s. Only difference is the 10s have the extendable booms. I've always used Cannons, but been on boats with Scotty's and Big Jon's. They all seem to do the job fine. I, like you, had the manuals, and just plain got tired of cranking them up, especially when the ball was 100+ feet down. The electrics make your fishing time so much more enjoyable. Good luck in your decision! -
That's what I was afraid of. I took pictures of the old one still on the engine to try and match up, but the composite and steel cover pumps look identical in pictures I've seen, which makes me wonder what is it about the different covers that dictates a different pump. Thanks for the reply, pap!

I ran a 6hp Johnson 2-stroke on my old 18' Starcraft center console and it worked great. Had the EZ-Steer system attached and steered from the console.

The boat is currently down due to a bad starter. While I was taking the old starter off last week to bring home, I noticed the water circulating pump on the front of the engine was leaking. So, when I go up next weekend to install the new starter, I plan on doing the circulating pump, also. Problem is, they list (2) different pumps depending if the engine has a composite or stamped steel timing cover. I don't know which it has and won't until I see it for myself. Is there a breakdown list of which years used the composite and which used the steel? Engine is a MerCruiser 4.3L, 2bbl with the Thunderbolt ignition and rated 190hp. The original engine was a 2000 model year, however, the previous owner "forgot" to winterize the engine prior to the 2004-05 winter and the block cracked. It received a replacement engine from Jasper in 2005 and I bought the boat a few months later. Any help is appreciated!
