  6. Here we are into March, Lake Erie froze over, ducks and geese dying along shore line. I hear this is the highest freeze over since '79. I remember '79 when the spring was as cold as the winter due to the ice on Erie. The boom was lifted well into April. He who fished Ontario back then, what was impact on fishing in May? Shade

  10. YES Larson keep it simple. If you are alone you can only run 3 rods, with your wife , assuming she has a license, you can run 6 rods maybe to many for an 18' boat but 5 is doable. Two riggers, 2 wires set on 2.5 and a lead core down the shoot. Keep your turns wide and you wires depths about 10' ( ex. set one at 180' back and one at 210' back depending on thermocline) along with a ten color lead core which will be around 50' down. Mount your riggers as close to the edge as you can and swing the arms at 3 and 9 o'clock for maximum spread and learn to run cheaters off them. Good Luck...have fun Shade
  11. Larson, To fish Lake O you need basic equipment: 1) Depth Finder/ GPS Combo or a finder and a separate GPS and a Temp/Speed. It is very important to first locate fish or bait, (to do this you need a probe that shows you where the thermocline is (50-55 degree water), how deep the fish are and the speed you are running at your downrigger ball. 2) You need at least 2 downriggers (preferably 3). More fish are caught on spoons then flies in most cases. This also gives you more depth variety and easier to adjust depths when you locate the fish. 3) You need at least 1 rig with at least 400' of copper, at least 3 or 4 wire with 10' - 12' poles, 1 or 2 (10) color lead core set ups and a good set of boards. This allows you to cover more water at a variety of depths. This may be a little overwhelming and you can get away without copper, maybe just 2 wires (however if something happens to a wire you are down to one rod) also 2 riggers and one lead core. We have not even discussed flashers, flies, spoons or dipsys. All I can say is leave it basic. You may toy with poles and line but you need a way to locate fish, find down temp, maintain down speed, run a variety of spoons and cover more water is essential. It all depends on your cash flow so you walk before you run but have fun. Do not get discouraged even if you drop a few, just think how much fun it was fighting them. You may wan to do a couple of charters in your home port and read these posts on fish reports and ask questions. There is a variety of topics, read them all. Shade
  12. Had a fine day. We went 12 of 15 boxing 5, able to release 3 kings and 3 steelies and a shaker. Most of the damage was on set ups Green Gators on riggers down 45 and SSW down 65 both on cheaters, wires back 240 and 225 on Green Glow SD/ ATM Blue Hammer Glow and Mountain Dew SD/ ATM UGG. Started out 125 FOW with NE troll and when we hit 150 we started with a double and had hits all the way to 165 FOW. Most came on the NE troll up to the ladders and a couple when we came back SW. When the water laid down the lake seemed to shut down but we had to head in anyway. Shade
  13. Loose eye, Welcome to the site. We are docked at Wileys in Oak Orchard. we have a 30' cruiser/cranberry canvas fly bridge. Boat name is Hannah Christine. We normally fish on the week ends and would be glad to have jump on board and join us. just PM me if interested. Can not miss our rig, or call us on radio anytime. Shade
  14. It all depends on the Charter your on. I fished Lake O in the 70's and when we came back in 2006 we did 4 charters to see what changed. I took 2 charters out of Olcott and both were ugly. The one was lucky he got paid. When they say 1/2 a day...means 1/2 a day. It was a 45 minute ride to his spot and 45 minutes back. We left at 7am back in dock at 11am. NO TIPS. Then we did 2 charters at the Oak. Both on the same boat. This captain does not make you pay for a ride. Fishing started when the last pole was set and ended when the last pole came out. Boxed out both times and had ball. Friendly, funny and talkative. This guy and his dad worked their butts off. Bagged every fish and took pictures for us and Fished 4+ hours. These are the charters you tip and recommend. Shade
  15. Glad to see you guys made it in. Scary as hell buddy. Had a similar experience years ago in Seneca lake. A fishermen was on shore and heard our may day and that we had a trailer in the lot. He and his brother got the trailer off my truck and hooked it to his truck and had it in the water when we pulled up. Just glad you guys got out ok. Howie
  16. I attended 3 seminars hosted by some top Charters on the west end and they all said the same thing. Percentage wise black is on top. if you have a favorite color, mine is a glow frog run it, but black puts more fish in the box. Shade
