Momay, I understand degrees. Here in Olcott we have 78 degrees. What I heard on the radio was someone telling someone else to head to 25N. What hw said was do you know how to find lines on your GPS. If I were to put a heading for 25N should my GPS say N78.25? Howie

On many Fishing reports from the Oak I see :Fished 27N Line or 25N Line. Question - I have a Raymarine A60, How do I find 27N Line or 25N Line on my GPS? In other words what dio I need to do to find those areas? I mainly fish out of Olcott but I would like to see if I could pull that information up if I needed. Thanks, Howie

Rule of thumb. The slider will only go down as far as the belly in your line. Assuming the line is tight the slider will be half way down your setting ( rigger is down 50', slider will be about 25"). Like Gambler said if you want it 10, 15 or 20' above you spoon you will need to tie a rubber band around rigger cable then attach the mono and rubber band together with the swival on you cheater at the disatnce you want it above your spoon. dipsy/spin doctor question
Shade replied to Baby Blue's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Depth times 3 minus 10% with SD/Fly, Times 3 with spoons. 50' down = 160' back running SD/Fly 50 down = 150' running spoons 60' down = 195 back running SD/Fly 60 down = 180 back running spoons And so on. I wouldn't bet the ranch but I would bet this is close. Shade -
First of all just because they say the fish are in 120 - 180 ' does not mean there all over the place. Do you have a speed and temp probe? If you do not you are fishing blind. You need to know at what depth the 48 - 55 degree water is. Is it 50' down or 70' down? Thats the temp of the water the fish will be. Next you need to find the bait fish. Once you set up and start trolling , what is your trolling speed at the ball? Its all about presentation, water temp and lure selection. This is all done by trial and error. Shade

That was a spoon designed by someone, probably a Charter Capt. and Dreamweaver developed it. Thats how most of the spoons you see today was originally designed by an Ontario Fishermen. Not just spoons, flashers and flies have been designed by what was successful on the water. Great stuff. Shade

BP, Most everyone runs 22" leader between flashe and fly. There are some who may run spoons behind flashers as well with some success. Shade

MB, First, what port are you fishing out of? Then check fish reports like LongLine suggested. If you need some tips post a question and it will get answered. If you are new to Ontario take CBish advice and hire a charter first, ask questions and go from there. This web site has helped a lot of guys put fish in their box including myself. You need to evaluate you equipment and just look over all the threads that posted each day. Shade

This is not a fish story but it also has to do with being alone. Back in 2000 I was working in Wellsville, NY and I had a house on top of Niles Hill. The driveway was about 850' off the road so the house was totally secluded and surrounded by woods on three sides. It was a hunting paradise that had not been hunted in years. I built a ladder stand and my wife had come to Buffalo to visit the family and was on her way back. I took my 3 wheeler that I had at the time and I dragged this 25' foot ladder stand into the woods. I walk this ladderstand up against the tree but I forgot the center brace. I decided to climb up the stand anyway and at least get it tied off. While standing on the plateform I was attempting to wrap the strap aroung the tree. The stand turned and began to slide off the tree. There was a smaller tree right next to the one the stand was against so I jumped and grabbed hold. I looked down and the bike and a pile of branches where right below me. I new if I let go I was going to get seriously hurt. The only thing that went through my mind that my wife was on her way home but would not know where I was. I slowly slid down the tree but I was cutting my chest and arms as I came down. I was brush burned on my chest, belly, arms and legs. It was one scarry experience. Never Hunt or Fish alone unless you where the right protection equipment and always let someone know exaclty where you are and when you will be back. After that experience any time I went into the woods I left one of my hand held radios on the table and showed my wife where I was and when I would be back. Shade

Ray, Heres how it is going to play out. She is retired you are still working. When you are home she will tell you how bored she is and "Lets do something" or "Lets go somewhere" which cuts into your fishing time. This will not happen right away but give it 6 months. Save yourself and find her some volunteer work or my friend it will be Nag, Nag, Nag. The real problems begins when you are both retired..........OH MY GOD... Shade

Proposed rule change on Pro Am ending times.....Opinions ???
Shade replied to Fishtails's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Rod, I did not volunteer to be on the committee to do any favors or to reinvent the wheel but to see first hand why when threads like this come up that it is being discussed and an explanation why it was not changed is relayed. Rules are put in place because someone tried to pull a fast one. There are a few rules that I do not understand why they even have them but I am not going to try and get an explanation on them. I agree that what you are looking for is an 8 hour fishing time like the pros have and like it was in the past. It will take a lot of support to get a rule changed, I hope a rules do not get changed because of a few. Improvements should be made because of the many. I also agree that you should not be disqualified because you have a problem with your boat that prevents you from getting back to your dock. Why was this rule implemented? It is bad enough your boat is disabled but now you lose all the money you put up to enter the Pro/Am. Shade -
Justin, I thought ruffles in Allegany county where I own property was going to be a problem. Just keep this in mind. Most of the newer shotguns and ammo can get you out there 150 yards, black powder will get you around 300 yards. This can be a problem if you are hunting open fields. Most of us hunt inside woods and I have not seen a kill longer than 100 yards in any woods in WNY. Most hunters today hunt out of tree stands and last there are hunters out there using hand guns that can reach 300 yards already. The new gear is starting to overshadow the hunting. There was a time when you used a recurve bow with a kill range of 25 yds., shotgun with a bead for a site with a kill range of under 100 yards and a pair of binnoculars. NOW we have shotguns with rifled barrels, 10 power scopes and slugs that can run accurate for 150 - 200 yards, Compound bows that can throw an arrow 340 fps and a kill range of 50 yds.or more, legalized the use of high powered rifles and we are very close to see crossbows become legal also. This is a state with a very weak orange law for hunters but with finest fire power. Whats next, allow road hunting off pick up trucks.... Shade

No not recommended, but if you use a rubberband it will work. Lupe the rubberband on the lead core and then insert the other end of rubberband into your release. Shade

Proposed rule change on Pro Am ending times.....Opinions ???
Shade replied to Fishtails's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Rod, My only concern is you are putting a lot of unecessary pressure on the Observers. Now they need to make sure all your lines are out of the water by 1:30. What if you get a screamer while your bringing in your lines. Do you have to release it or not count it? Who says that it is 1:30. I see too many variables with this suggestion. I think, my suggestion, is boats should line up inside pier heads prior to leaving instead of leaving from their dock space. Also the AM division should leave at 0500 not 0515 and begin fishing at 0530. This would allow AM to pick up xtra time fleaving from pier and an additional 15 minutes to your preferred spot. Just need to follow common courtesy to smaller boats when leaving the pier. Another issue Rod, Everytime there is some discussion or opinions on the Pro/Am the same response arrises "VOLUNTEER TO BE ON THE COMMITTEE", so I did. As of today,1209 PM on 8/13, I have not been notified of any meeting. I sent a PM to Paul and an Email to Bill to find out why and I am awaiting their response. Howie -
Thanks Yankee, Thats what I thought. I need to make arrangements a little earlier this year. Last year I could not fine a place to stay. I normally have my boat in Olcott but I want to put it in Wilson from May until the Niagara Pro/Am and then take it to the Oak for the Orleans Pro/Am. Shade

Read the fishing reports. These guys tell you at just about every area in the lake what is hitting. Right now it is a wide variety. Just running what is hot is only part of the equation. Remember speed, presentation, depth and water temp fills in the rest. All in the reports. Shade
