Here's the video as promised: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4bO0A5P-_w After being on vacation in Cape Cod the past week and not being on the water for two, it was great to get back out. I fished with my great buddy Anthony yet again and our plan was to focus on brown trout as we felt that it gave us our best chance at an LOC Derby fish. We fished in close and didn't have to leave the beautiful green water just north and east of the Bay. Best water was 30', and everything took a fish: two slider divers, 5 and 7 color cores and the two riggers. We finished the day a perfect 15 out of 15 fish hitting the deck, and the biggest just missed a spot on the LOC Board at an official weight of 9#15 ounces.....lol. It shot out of the air like a cannonball once hooked, and it weighed ten and a half pounds on the boat (this included the metal fish holder holding it up which weighs about 8 ounces) so we knew it was going to be a longshot....... The following all took fish: Free slider out 45' and back 75' Free slider out 35' and back 75' Riggers: 15-20' down seven color core five color core The following lures all took fish: 42 sec SS DW pink muffin spoon Raspberry Dolphin spoon UV Wonderbread DW SS Purple Thunder with ladder tape spoon Pink and yellow spoon - one side pink, other side yellow with silver holographic tape down middle with silver cup Purple Frog DW standard spoon early The patterns of purple and pink/yellow seemed best, followed by UV Wonderbread as the sun came up Good luck to all - the fishing is great. Enjoy this great weather and enjoy this spectacular fishery.......I'll post a video of our great action later in the week. - Chris

Kings--what should be done
momay4000 replied to Capt Vince Pierleoni's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Awesome post Gill-T. It was like the 'Cliff Notes" version of 3,000,000 other posts. Best part is the idea to manage data year to year. Well put. Chris -
Got mine for sure - thanks again Capt Larry. The net is great and your service even better. Tight lines mate, Chris

Fantastic advice above from some great laker anglers. I also love to fish for them and would add one more thing: please take the time to learn how to properly catch and release these beautiful creatures. As more anglers target them and presumptively release them, I think it 's important to take the time to learn how to "burp" their swim bladders and learn how to torpedo them head first to stimulate them to swim back down to the bottom. I find that lakers are much less sensitive to the temperature and pressure changes like a big salmon, and quite easy to revive and get swimming again, as long as you take the time to get the air out of their swim bladder. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9224.html Good luck to all, Chris

Yes sir / that was us. I hope we weren't being a pain circling with you but that area was producing. You have a nice boat - I hope you were hooking up as well in that water. Tight lines - good luck, Chris -
Hello LOU friends, Fished again with my great pal Anthony and we covered quite a bit of water today. We started in 110 fow and had a few dinky marks here and there and started the morning with an 8 ounce king that hit a twinkie rig pulling Familiar bite. After that, we moved out a bit deeper in the 180-200 fow area and had a really nice fish on wire, but it broke off at the leader in front of the flasher. We also had two slightly bigger two year old kings in that water along with a nice lake trout on the 400' copper pulling a 42 sec. Flasher with matching fly. Since we thought the fish were getting bigger the deeper we went, we made the decision to head offshore. We decided to head out offshore in the 400-500 fow area and there were solid marks, but they were down 200-250' and I'd bet the farm that they were nice kings. However, the bite was slow for us so we pulled all the rods and moved back into the shallower depths and had more decent action with smaller kings and another lake trout or two. We finished the day 9 for 10 with three lakers and 6 Chinook salmon. The following all took fish: 400' copper - 42 sec flasher/fly 250' wire pulling white/green dot SD and a hammer fly riggers between 80 -100 feet: wonderbread (thank you shout out to Tomy L. for the advice on this set-up), 42 sec spoon, DW SS blue dolphin cheater wire 285' DW Twinkie rig/silver paddle and familiar bite Good luck to all, Chris

backing for copper and leader
momay4000 replied to The homewrecker's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Homewrecker, I put 300 yds of 50# braid, tie it to an inline swivel 150# size and tie the other end of the swivel to the copper using a Haywire twist. I do not connect copper directly to the braid. Next is another inline swivel after spooling on the copper of your desired length and finally a 30' fluoro leader on the terminal end of the second in line swivel. 300 yds braid..........inline swivel......copper........inline swivel........leader Good luck, Chris -
Awesome advice bud - thanks for putting me at ease regarding the sensor. It would make sense b/c it was extremely intermittent, then constant, then chirping for a second or two......extremely annoying but you put me at ease! Matt - this is great advice as well. I agree 100% that paying attention to very small subtle details can make all the difference. Tight lines fellas, Chris

Agree that the blank looks like a Michigan Stinger with the small dimples in the hammered finish but MS never used ladder tape like that - they always had their custom wide tape like on an NBK. Don't overthink it - try and find a similar blank on the MS website and tape it yourself - you can find the glow and black ladder tape at most local tackle shops. - Chris

Happens all the time on my boat when one side seems hotter than the other. This year, it seems like my non-probe rigger has been better than the one with the probe. Also, I was running a bit slower - 2.2-2.4 Subtroll so maybe that's part of it. Thanks for the reports - good luck to everyone out there, Chris

Hello LOU friends, I fished with my great pal Anthony early Saturday morning and we dropped our spread in around 5:45 AM and fished til 9:30 for a relatively short morning fish. Things were good until my audio sensor kept going off intermittently so we had to deal with an intermittent 100 decibel high pitched squeal for almost 4 hours. Oil pressure 40 PSI, temp 165 degrees, perfectly full lower unit oil.....hmmmmmm. The buzzer would only ring for a second or two, then chirp, then ring for a minute, then for 30 minutes, then stop for ten.......so it was driving me nuts but sounded like a short or bad sensor rather than a true alarm. I pulled all sensor wires but the oil pressure one (was afraid to pull it out at sea since I didn't know exactly where it was on the motor) but it wouldn't fix the problem. We decided to stay and fish and we went 3 for 4, with one nice low twenties Chinook, a nice brown that we lost in the prop wash and a ten pound lake trout. We caught all fish on the riggers with spoons, and for the second week in a row, we haven't had a wire FF bite. The fish we lost was a beauty that ripped the 400' copper, only to lose it half way through the battle. Fleas were reasonable, but not terrible. We fished north and east of the bay in 110-130 fow. The following all caught fish: 90' rigger free slider NBK 65' rigger Kevorkian DW SS 80' rigger NK 42 second Since I was bummed about the sensor and couldn't get it to make the noise again at the dock, I decided to take the boat back out solo for a few hours in the afternoon and fish close to port for lake trout since storms looked like they were brewing. I confirmed the location of the oil sensor so I was confident in trouble shooting it at sea. As soon as I dropped my first rigger on the bottom, the noise started again and I fixed it instantly by pulling the small wire on the oil pressure alarm. I'm sure there is an electrical short somewhere (or possibly moisture got behind my dash from all the rain the past few days) but I can live without the sensor knowing I'm constantly checking my gauges every few minutes (yes I'm that anal). I wound up catching 7 more lakers in about two hours of solo fishing, and the biggest was around 15 pounds. All were caught on the classic cowbell and Spin n glow setup although I had an incredible rip on a wire thumper with a yellow dodger/green SNG. I had the fish hooked for about 10 minutes but wound up breaking off at the Spin n glow leader..... Good luck to all, Chris

Tom, Your quality is what makes me coming back (take the fact that you take the time to snell all your hooks when you tournament tie your harnesses, or the fact that you offer custom marking on your copper spools, or the myriad of color combinations that you have on your flasher/flies, and most importantly the dedication you have to our fishery). Please, please, please do not send me anything free - I'm sure you're goofing around but I do NOT want anything unless I pay you for it. As a guy with super high standards, I just like to recognize those who give a great product and service. Cheers to you, Chris
