  1. Hey gentlemen, Thanks for some great ideas - I typically use 200 kHz, so next year I'll be sure to try the 83. Also, I will switch to resitor plugs. Thanks boys - have a great off season and for those that hunt, have a great season in the field, Chris
  2. I put a new HDS-8 on my boat this year as well and here's a few of my observations: 1.) I also cannot see my downrigger balls past 75' down, especially at speeds >2.5 sog unless I turn the sensitivity WAY UP (80+) 2.) Also, at higher motor RPM's (4.3 Merc I/O) I also pick up a lot of interference so I'm forced to turn down the Sensitivity 3.) I discovered the Fish n' Chip feature on my last trip this year (select the Fish n' Chip feature in Menu and it gives excellent contour data if you use a Navionics Card) 4.) After adjusting the ducer up a bit to pick up the balls, it made it impossible for the unit to pick up depth at full throttle. The transducer really needs to be parallel to the bottom Just a few thoughts on the HDS-8 during my first full season with it. I don't love it, but I don't hate it....... Good luck, Chris
  3. Nick, Not sure about Opti tackle copper, but I can get two passes of Atommik 45# copper through the eye of a Spro inline swivel (I think these are 150# variety). It's tight, but can be done. Good luck, - Chris
  4. Bondouley, Thanks for your great reports this year - they were always great reads. Good luck in the woods this year - be safe and look forward to hearing from ya next year! - Chris
  5. YT, Thanks so much for all of your awesome reports this past year - they were very helpful helping me, and great reading on a Monday morning. You have always been generous with advice, and gracious with your honesty. For some reason, I took a PM beatdown from another LOU member regarding my post above about seeing robins in my yard a few weeks ago (implications that I was full of shiznit that I saw a flock of birds in my lawn and that I was smoking something good that day.....). Either way, I thank you for your post and I'll make sure that I read my Farmer's Almanac a little closer next time about an early winter. Good luck in the field this year, Chris
  6. I had 12 robins in my yard on Saturday eating worms during the rain
  7. Way to go buddy. As you know we pulled the boat for the season on Saturday - it's always nice when 20 bass boats are blocking the launch while they're waiting for their 7AM start to their tournament.....they really picked the perfect spot to idle all their boats. Thanks so much for another great season!!! Good luck and be safe, Chris
  8. I think it's called whirling disease? I have no idea what causes it, but I remember reading something about it from the DEC.....
  9. Good news - not algae.... http://blogs.democratandchronicle.com/520/?p=3416 Whew.....
  10. Awesome pics - thanks for sharing. Here's my personal favorite from last year on one of my cams from somewhere in New York (lol). Be safe and may you have a great year this year, Chris
  11. I fished with my great buddy Anthony today and we fished the 1-3footers from 6 AM til 10:30. We caught only three fish today - a 1# brown, a 7-8 # brown and one solitary skipper king. We had a few other knock offs today but the lake conditions were tough and the fishing followed. We fished a tad east of the bay but most of our time was due north and west of the bay. We started in 85' and ventured to around 185' and then back into the shallower 65' area. We did not have any hits on cut bait, flasher/flies, copper or a 10 color core. It seemed like most of our hits were between 100-140'. All hits were rigger bites other than a single hit on an 180' wire dipsy pulling a wonderbread standard size spoon. The following caught fish today: rigger 65' cheated with a DW SS Steelie Stomper with a gold cup took the two browns Rigger 75' - DW regular SSW spoon took the king wire 180' wire with Wonderbread DW standard spoon had one short hit. The other 2-3 knock offs were the same stuff on the riggers We tried about a dozen other lures (NBK, Carmel Dolphin, Buffalo Bill, UV mixed veggie, green glow frog, red glow frog, BF KOS, Kevorkian regular and mag, and a few others without a nibble.) Meat didn't take a hit either, nor did any of the standard spinny/fly combos (green, silver, white paddles with the common green, mirage, hammer and glow flies) I have posted about all year We will be back at it tomorrow on Anthony's boat - good luck and be safe to all, Chris
  12. Awesome report indeed!! Thanks for posting some great details on your experience. We will be at it at least one last time this weekend as we are getting close to pulling the boat for the year. Good luck and be safe, Chris
  13. With all due respect I don't buy this argument. How could a fish get more leverage from a treble vs. single hook? It's impossible if the treble hook point is only hooked in one spot and you are using a swivel. Saltwater guys/gals often use single hooks b/c of deeper tissue penetration. I think you will have more knock offs with singles. Just my two cents, Chris
  14. Great video - as always. You know it's funny but even though I know you landed the fish I am still nervous watching it while you are hand lining the Dipsy that you might lose it......what's wrong with me?
  15. Great job yesterday and good luck today!! May the tyee gods be with you again today..... I look forward - as always - to reading your play by plays and watching your videos. Be safe out there today, Chris
  16. Hans is on the money, This is why I fish offshore this time of year. I cannot stand combat fishing in the shallows this time of year so I like to focus on the deep waters. Good luck to all, - Chris
  17. I fished with my brother today from 6:00AM til 10:30 AM and we had a tons of hits, but only managed to land five fish. We would have screamers on the riggers and wire divers, some fish for twenty seconds and others for a few minutes and then they would shake off. We also had one fly break off. Steady action from the minute we put rods in at 210' fow until we worked north to around 385' fow. We finished the day 5 for 14, and as mentioned it was very difficult to bring these beasts to the boat deck b/c of the shake-offs. Biggest fish was no more than 15#, all Chinook today. Seemed like they preferred a NE and SW trolling direction and speed between 2.2 and 2.5 on my Subtroll. The MVP today were the wire divers, followed by the 95' rigger. 600' and 500' coppers did not take a hit today. Also - I really have a bone to pick with whoever is in charge with the migrating buoy. Today it was in 340'.....In my opinion, it's a navigational hazard, especially when it keeps changing locations without warning and the buoy is only about a foot out of the water.....what a joke. The following all took fish: rigger 95' - (I'll give you one guess....) yes, Bob Fuller KOS rigger 95' free slider - Stinger green nuclear spoon rigger 110' - Stinger NBK wire 300' - Livewire Spin Dr./Atommik42 second fly wire 315' - Green Glow Nuclear Spin Dr./Atommik mirage fly wire 280' - Hammertime Spin Dr./Atommik Hammer Fly Purple spoons, Carmel Dolphin, SSW patterns did not take fish for us today. Good luck to all - please be safe. Only 2-3 more trips this year and the boat will be pulled in preparation for bow hunting - Chris
  18. Probably a sheet of bait. Otherwise it would be a fish about 5' wide......lol Good luck out there and be safe, Chris
  19. Matt, Great stuff - thanks so much for sharing. I'm extremely thankful that you are willing to publish this information for free, to make us all better fishermen/women. Cheers mate!! -Chris
  20. I would recommend this: Read the reports over the past few days up until your trip to get a feel for the water and certainly look for where the boats are to get a feel on depth. Fish your Fishfinder and focus on the marks, not necessarily temp. However, most importantly I hope you will return the favor and share a report on your own success to help others catch fish as well. Good luck, Chris
  21. Giant leopard slugs. We had one on the driveway last night in fact. Saw them for the first time about two years ago and almost soiled my drawers. It was stretched out about 5 inches and the tentacle things on its head were sticking out. I never remember seeing these as kids only over the past few years...............
  22. Awesome report and once again it's great to see all the I-Bay/Braddocks/Genesee success this year.....my pleasure on the BF KOS recommendation. That spoon has replaced my previous favorite - the NK 42 second. Be safe and may you have continued success, - Chris
  23. LOL!! It's actually quite amazing what you can do when you're trying to net these guys alone. Granted I have autopilot which makes all the difference in the world, but it still is a bit chaotic. Next time I'm going to film it using my Go-Pro. Good luck to all, - Chris
  24. Not to rain on your parade but probably less than 10#. The fish looks to be about 25-28" long if your hand is about 3.5-4" wide. It doesn't look too girthy, and most steelhead around 30" are around 10# if they aren't too wide. Still a beauty of a fish sir! Do yourself a favor - measure the width of your hand exactly, then calculate the length of the fish in the photo. 10# for 30", roughly one pound per inch after that. - Chris
