I use Seaguar Fluoro leader material (there are two types, one has a smaller line diameter and has a yellow seal and is more expensive, so just buy the box with the red seal on it). The knot to the swivel is a Trilene knot, and I join the mono to the leader material using an Allbright knot. Good luck and be safe on the water, Chris

Great job Brian! Awesome fish, Chris -
I have the SPX-5 Sportpilot with the original controller ( I think the units now have a fancier control panel). It can easily handle 3-4 footers. In fact it handles them better than I can. The counter steering can be a little annoying and loud at first but if u calibrate it correctly and u can adjust the sensitivity, it's fine. Disclaimer - I do not have any personal or financial ties or sponsorship with ray marine. If u ever want to see it in action - drop me a PM as u are always welcome on my boat for a seatrial. Good luck ! Chris

King- I just wrote this in another post but I've had a ray marine sport since they came out a few years ago. I love it. Pros: handles rough seas, easy install (need to mount flux gate compass, helm steering unit, control unit and the small control touch pad).perfect for cable steered boats Cons: a bit noisy, makes passive steering stiff in standby mode I would buy it again in a hearbeat Good luck Chris

Just a moderate amount of tightness on my boat. It's only a factor when docking in strong wind and even at that it's tolerable. Best investment I've made

Tannero, It's my third or fourth year with the SPx Sportpilot. Best investment I ever made on my boat. You will love it and never look back. Pros: easy to install, holds course very nicely even in heavy seas, great control head (I believe the new helm control is even better than the original), great Raymarine customer service (my original was part of a recall and they had a new steering control to my door in one week), extremely simple to use with easy calibration Cons: a little noisy with the steer/countersteer (this can be dampened by decreasing the sensitivity), makes passive steering a bit stiff when you are steering your boat in standby mode Overall - it's a great investment - I promise you will love it for your cable steered boat! Good luck, Chris disclaimer - I have no financial or sponsorship ties to Raymarine in any way

Thanks again guys for all the kind words - be safe out there! Reelintense (awesome name BTW) - it's very fascinating that you had a much different bite (i.e. divers) than us. I wonder if it is speed related or the rest of my spread changed things? Nonetheless, it was a day of deep presentation for us. I also added a video link above Be safe and good luck to all, Chris

Fished with my buddy Mike and my brother Kevin, from 6 AM til 10:30. Today was a great day and a day to fish deeper presentations. All action waas on 600' copper and our riggers. We couldn't buy a hit on the Dipsy's, short lead cores and a surface rod with a 1 1/4 ounce keel sinker. All fish were chinook and lakers (no coho salmon, BT or steelies today) We focused on the 100-120 fow area, mainly east of the I-Bay channel. After about seven hits and a slight lull in the action, we slid out to 290 fow only to find barren water and continued no action. When we fished back into the 100' area, we hit about 5 or 6 more. We finished the day with about 12 fish that hit the deck, with a few other knock offs in between. The cotton catching on the lines was tough, especially on the damn Planer board tow line. We fished two riggers 90'-120' both with free sliders, along with two coppers (400' and 600'), two wire divers, various short lead cores and a surface line. As mentioned above, only the deep riggers and deep copper caught fish, and it was only a spoon bite. The following spoons all caught fish: NK 42 sec (110' rigger), Moonshine Carbon 14 Mag (600' copper), DW SS Midnight special (90-120' rigger), DW SS UV Jager Bomb, DW Regular SSW (120' rigger), DW SS Alewive with white back, DW SS Wonder bread (later in day on 100' rigger). The MVP spoon was the 42 second. The highlight of the day was a 24 pound 2 ounce chinook which managed to tangle the wire diver, second rigger and surface line, but we still landed it (Go-Pro video to come later). Good luck to all- be safe on the big pond, - Chris Here's my first attempt at creating/editing a Go-Pro video. Sorry if it's boring, but at least you can enjoy the music.

Stan, I agree with Matthew - I don't think a heavy line like copper really has that much action up and down when you have so much line out when comparing 2.5 to 4.0 sog. Even with high waves, the up and down action is dampened by the length and stiffness of the copper line. You may have side to side "whipping" action on the line when you are zig-zagging or turning, but not up and down to a great extent unless you are changing speeds back and forth. I think Chromeslayer nailed it - you probably just left the strike zone or you lost action on your bait. It's simple physics and I think the Smart Troll is going to change a lot of what we think is going on down there..... Good luck and be safe on the water, Chris

Thanks for the update - it was sad to see all these fish swimming around my boat in the bay. They all looked like they had broken backs and were swimming around in circles. I hope it doesn't affect the salmonids Good luck on the water and be safe, Chris

I moor my boat at Mayers Marina in I-Bay and up until this year I had a front row seat on D-dock and I would watch all the follies at the County launch on the west side. I've seen everything from the Sheriff Dept. sink their SUV to a boat sinking (brand new beauty sunk last year) to fist fights to axles ripped off on the tow vehicle to multiple arrests in handcuffs. Even Mayers gets a little testy from time to time - especially when booze is involved! On somedays the entertainment is just as good as the fishing!

Great report as always - solo and only a few hours and 6 fish which is a great job! Nothing like landing a solo double, too!! Glad to hear that the kings are starting to show up in better numbers around Rochester. Good luck and be safe, Chris -

Bandrus - I think your comment is spot on! However......and there's always a however......if this information can turn a 5-10 hit day into a 30 hit day, then it might change my thinking...... Awesome stuff - I hope folks with start to gather depth data on Atomik 45# copper as well as wire divers and possibly even snap weight data. Thanks to everyone for sharing such useful information, Chris

Hey fellow fishermen/women, I came across this very interesting post on true depth of running a 300' copper or ten color core based on the new Smart Troll system: http://www.greatlakesfisherman.com/forums/showthread.php?p=132182#post132182 I know some folks are already starting to use the Smart Troll system. I find this extremely interesting, yet I wonder if it will clash with simple instinct/experience that we already use. I must say, I think this is something I'd like to add to my boat in the off season. The good news is the lines are running higher than we think instead of deeper. I'd love to see some Dipsy diver numbers some day, although I can imagine early on anglers using this system will be a bit secretive about releasing their personal data. Really neat stuff! Good luck to all on the water, Chris Disclaimer - I have no ties to Smart Troll, Blood Run copper or any other product mentioned here. I'm simply a weekend warrior with too much time on his hands......

Awesome video. Quick questions - what Gopro video setting do you have it on to get the best wide angle with lowest distortion (I think 720/30 is what mine is set at and it seems to be OK). Also, what is your best method of conversion? I'm using the CineForm to convert the file on the SD card from MP4 to Avi, and then Windows Moviemaker to edit for upload to Youtube. Are you using anything that's easier/quicker which is free? Thanks bud, Chris

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think the hole you are referring to (on the starboard side of the lower unit) is a drain hole (no threads, no nut in there) which drains water from the cavity in front of the shift shaft which sits forward of the main drive shaft. I think it's meant to drain water from that cavity of the shift shaft. If you have oil flowing from this hole, you have a bad seal somewhere - could be coming from the upper unit, shift shaft seal, etc. Call a good boat mechanic and I'm sure they can set you straight in about ten seconds. Good luck, Chris
