Craziness all around from this new legislation!!! I'm speechless and confused on all of this. Flybuster, if I'm reading the law correctly (and I've read it 10 times and I'm still confused), but I would say that any gun you currently own would be grandfathered in but have to be registered if it: Has a detachable magazine, is semi-automatic AND has "one of Assault Rifle features" such as a muzzle brake (I would consider a ported/vented choke tube like my Carlson's a muzzle brake), pistol grip, bayonet, collapsible stock etc. It must have BOTH a detachable magazine and be semi-auto first, and then possess one of the other AR features to be considered a banned weapon. I would assume most turkey guns which are semi-auto have tube-style magazines so automatically they would be disqualified even if you put a bayonet, collapsible stock, and a muzzle brake on it. Some of my other concerns: 1.) Where/how are we supposed to dispose of our high-capacity mags? What constitutes a "relic" magazine (which can be possessed legally) in the new gun law? 2.) How in the world is each county going to handle the incredible clerical demand for renewal of all of our pistol permits every five years? And at what cost every 5 years to each of us? 3.) When I want to buy ammo, how the heck is each dealer going to handle the demand for a background check each time? Is this going to take 45 minutes every time when I have to wait in line just to buy three boxes of slugs? 4.) When we are forced to register our AR's, is this a segway towards confiscation at a later date now that we have disclosed our firearms on a statewide database? 5.) As someone who treats people with mental illness, will this deter folks from seeking medical treatment b/c of fear that I legally may have to report them to authorities simply b/c they own guns? I think every one of us supports having a safer community, but it looks to me that this legislation really doesn't target criminals at all - it's simply political posturing at it's finest......errr, worst..... - Chris

2103 Fall LOC - NO LAKE TROUT DIVISON!!!!!
momay4000 replied to GAMBLER's topic in Tournament Talk, Shows, Events & Seminars
I think it would be a travesty to eliminate the Lake Trout Division simply b/c the same guys win it year in and year out. Yes, I continue to see Barber's, Kledjy's, Yablonski's over and over again, but so what? To me, these guys - and guys like Gambler - are the Michael Jordans of fishing lake trout. The reason we see the same names is because these guys have mastered their craft, and are competing against a smaller number of folks specifically targeting the lakers. They're smart, they've adapted and they're great at what they do. I applaud a guy like Gambler who learns his craft well and adapts to target big lakers in an area when/where it's harder to land bigger kings that time of year. It gives him the best opportunity to win big money and he does a great job at it. Look at what Michael Jordan did later in his career to give him the best shot at winning: when his legs tired and he no longer could compete with the big boys with flashy dunks and constant driving to the basket, he learned - and mastered - the turn around jumper, both to save his body and give him the best chance at winning. He still dominated and won three more championships.....and I don't remember the NBA banning the turn-around jump shot. If it's a question of protecting the species b/c of a stocking issue, it's up to the DEC and not a tournament director to adjust creel limits for a given body of water. I hope this will be reconsidered and making up for it by paying the "Top 40" positions in the salmon bracket simply waters down the meaning of placing on the LOC leaderboard. Just my two cents now that I'm back from the woods and have more time on my hands to rant, - Chris -
Totally awesome - I love someone who practices the "Be Prepared" Boy Scout motto! Only one critique - pack more water if you can. If you're stranded for 24 hours with more than just you - you might need more than 24 ounces. Thanks so much for sharing - I think your preparedness is fantastic! - Chris

This is called "polymelia" and it can happen in humans and animals. It's probably a result of a conjoined twin when the deer was in the womb. It's sort of like a siamese twin that we see in humans, but in this case only the extra legs grew in a mutated form. I've heard of this in cattle and dogs, but never seen a picture of a deer with an extra appendage like this one. I must say, it is gross but really cool at the same time. As always, I'm always skeptical of this being a local kill (my guess is this picture is all over the Internet) but either way it's got to be extremely rare (my guess is many animals with this would die very young b/c of infection risk, neurological problems, etc.) and most animals would succumb to coyotes or other predators b/c the extra growth would slow it down. Thanks for sharing - what a fascinating picture, - Chris

Daiwa Saltist Line Counter reel- Any experience with them?
momay4000 replied to Sk8man's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I bought two 30 sized Saltists last year for my wires and used them the last few weeks of the season. Honestly I liked the retrieve rate better than my Sealines, but I HATE the large line counter that digs into my wrist when I was reeling. I will use these for a full season in 2013 so maybe it's not a big deal, but I broke my wrist in 2011 and it seemed like the line counter was digging into my wrist and made it sore. If it continues I will sell them..... Just my two cents, - Chris -
Great story and great buck - thanks for the feedback on the camera, - Chris

Brian, That's a very good point about the copper. I wonder if any aluminum tubing from rod holders, riggers, etc was also being sold at the scrap yard? To all the fellow boaters who had stuff stolen - call the police and see if you can identify any of your stuff. The more thefts they can link to these tools, the more time they can spend rotting in the can. Man, I hate tools like this, - Chris

Wow - that's a great story! Congrats on a Wyoming beauty Be safe in the field and thanks for sharing, - Chris

Looks kinda similar to this big guy I happened to get a few pics of two years ago. I haven't seen him since 2010 and I haven't heard that anyone shot him. Great pic man - I hope you get him, - Chris

Gorgeous typical and perfect shot placement. Thanks for sharing - be safe and good luck in the field, - Chris

Matt, With all due respect - this is not true at all. I have heard this exact same story (i.e. "my buddy shot a coyote with a tag and it was traced back to an insurance company.....") as far back as 5 years ago. There is no way an insurance company would purchase coyotes raised on a farm, truck them somewhere, and then simply "release them" in the wild. The liability would be enormous and any state DEC agency would squash this is a heartbeat. Also, I tried to Google "Coyote Farms" on the 'net and couldn't find a single one. Once again, it's the infamous conspiracy theory....... I'm sure your buddy saved the tag, so show me a pic of the tag with the phone number so I can call it myself. I'm not trying to be disrespectful at all, but I just don't buy it, - Chris

Jerry, That's a great pic - lol!! Thanks for sharing, - Chris -
Sorry it took me awhile to get to you Indian - I have been in the woods the past two days and it's hard to get to the computer during hunting season....I'm not sure how you know so much about me when we haven't even met? No encounters with large bucks eh? I invite you to join me for a cocktail in my game lodge - but be careful because you might hit your head on any one of my mounts or you might trip on one of my freezers packed with venison and salmon that I use to feed my family. Oh I'm sorry sir - I guess having deer heads on the wall would make me a "yuppie chest beating idiot"..... Take care and good luck this year - I'm off to the country club to join in a "perversion of what we should be doing" followed by a short trip to my local bar to brag about my opening day. I'll make sure to tell all the paying youth hunters this year to steer clear of your family property. Cheers

Guys/Gals, I am an avid bowhunter and more importantly a father of two young girls and I am 100% in favor of the youth hunt. Personally, I think the majority of the responses here are trying to justify reasons why a youth hunt is bad, but I can imagine "deep down inside" most of the bowhunters simply don't want a youth hunt during "their season" out of fear that it will ruin "their hunting". I share the same concerns, however, regarding safety. Here's some of my thoughts: 1.) There is absolutely no validity to the "deer will become more spooked" and "bucks go nocturnal" logic. Yes they might become a bit more skiddish a day or two after, but once the rut hits do you actually think a big buck is going to still be spooked two weeks later after a one weekend gun hunt? If this logic was true, you would see very few deer taken after opening day of gun season, but if you look at the 2011 Deer Take stats (FX posted this a few days ago) notice that 66% of deer taken last year were taken AFTER opening weekend of Gun Season. 2.) I share many of the same concerns over sharing the same woods with gun hunters when I am in full camo with a bow. However, a solution for this would be to adopt similar regulations that Pennsylvania has which requires archery hunters to wear 250 square inches of orange if they are hunting during a portion of their season that coincides with big game or turkey. We have been sharing the same woods with turkey hunters and small game hunters for years and to the best of my knowledge there have been very few - if any - fatalities of bow hunters being shot b/c someone mistook them for game. If safety is truly your utmost concern, than any bow hunter would adopt this in a heartbeat. I would also argue that the majority of the youth hunters would be hunting on private land so the odds of an accident would be slim. 3.) As far as poaching - poachers are going to be poachers no matter what. And yes giving them an additional opportunity during a youth hunt could conceivably increase their opportunities to take Johhny's gun and shoot a big buck, but I imagine this is going to be few and far between. An adult is not even allowed to carry a gun during the youth hunt, and I think this is a great idea. 4.) The youth are the future of our sport. With dwindling numbers of hunters year after year and shrinking areas to hunt, I think we need an opportunity like this to promote our sport and get younger kids hooked for life. To hunt during a weekend with fewer hunters in the woods, better weather, and a good chance at seeing a nice deer can help promote this enthusiam. I would argue that there is nothing that could hook a kid more than to harvest a big game animal such as deer. I remember shooting my first deer like it was yesterday, yet unfortunately I have completely forgotten the details when I harvested my first squirrel and turkey. I argue that we need to all look at the big picture and encourage participation in our sport. Is the DEC's current proposal perfect? Absolutely not. Does it have flaws? Certainly. But I think we can use it as stepping stone to adopt other policies to make our sport safer. Initially my gut reaction to a Youth Hunt during Bow season was the same as many of you stated above. However, after I thought about it more I think it is a good idea for everyone. Just my two pennies and I hope I have not offended anyone - good luck to all in the field, - Chris Disclaimer - I do not work for the DEC and none of my family have any relations to the current law. I am simply an avid hunter and family man and I love to promote our sport

Gentlemen, Help me out here - is the Harvest report an "estimated" report based on the 45% reporting rate, the field surveys of 15,100 deer, etc. or is it the actual number of killed deer that were reported? My understanding is the total tally of deer killed statewide of 228,359 is an estimated number based on the reporting rate, field survey work, etc. and it already takes inot account all of the nuisance permits, poor rate of reporting, etc. Let me know your thoughts - thanks, - Chris

Big Water, NYS DEC Regulations require cutbait to be "Certified" free of VHS and other diseases. It would be illegal to use smelts from your local fishmonger which cannot be verified as free of disease. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/47282.html Good luck on the water, - Chris
