  1. Nice fish and report, Take a look at this: http://www.fishcreeksalmon.org/atlantic-salmon-id.htm Thanks for sharing, - Chris
  2. Awesome news, However, I heard that 5,000,000 salmon just showed up at the governor's mansion to lobby against this going into law.....
  3. Thanks for the replies gentlemen, I-Bay is loaded with very dirty water, lots of floating debris, but I'm not running through anything too thick on the way out such as weeds, algae, muck ,etc. If the thermostat is "sticking" - should I pull the boat immediately and get it fixed or simply keep an eye on things since it levels out after only a few seconds or so? Thanks for all the help guys, - Chris
  4. Gang, I have an '08 Merc I/O 4.3L: Weird thing has started happening this year - boat only overheats for 10-15 seconds only when I start out in the morning going to a full plane out of the I-Bay channel. It does NOT overheat at idle, nor does it overheat cruising at 5 knots from my dock through the channel to the lake. As soon as I achieve full plane, it overheats and I have to shut down. As soon as I shut down the boat, restart the engine and push it to 4000 RPM at idle, it instantly cools off and things are fine for the rest of the day, including trolling and cruising back in. I can run the boat after that for hours and it maintains a constant temp between 170-175 degrees whether trolling at 2.5 mph or cruising at 35 knots back in. My guess is I have sand, rust, debris in the system which gets flushed out each time, or perhaps it's an impeller problem (I have replace it every other year but not last year) Any thoughts would be helpful, Thx, - Chris
  5. Fishing Report Chris / Liv n' Ellie: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):6/11/11 Time on Water: 6-10 AM Weather/Temp: overcast Wind Speed/Direction:NE Waves: 1 ft. Surface Temp: 51-62 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 13 Total Boated: 12 Species Breakdown: Lakers, kings, steelhead Hot Lure: see below Trolling Speed: 2.6-3.0 Down Speed: Boat Depth: offshore Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Great day on the water - constant action from start to finish - the name of the game was bright baits on the surface. It was a day of a few follies, but the fishing was great so that's all that mattered. Started out with my engine overheating when I hit plane - looks like it was debris on the outdrive b/c after I scrubbed it down the boat was fine. Then we lost my Subtroll probe and ball b/c of a kink in my cable at 80'. Nonetheless, we set up when we found some nice temp breaks offshore and that's when the action started. We fished without downspeed or temp, but right before the cable snapped we had 46 degree water down 80'. Steelhead started us off, lakers kept us happy, and the kings were sprinkled in to give a little variety. We had a crazy rip on the wire, but lost it after 5 minutes - seemed like a big fish. Surface action was best for us, but we took a few kings deep on the 95' rigger. Hot lures: NBK, Ruby Red, Steelie Dan, Ruby Red icicle (I think that's what it's called), orange slurpee, Seasick waddler Best set-ups: 2 color and three color cores, surface planer with 5/8 ounce keel weight, free sliders on the riggers. FWIW, ALL lakers (four or five total) were on surface action. Good luck to all, - Chris
  6. Fishing Report Chris / Liv n' Ellie: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):6/5/11 Time on Water:6-10:30 Weather/Temp: overcast Wind Speed/Direction: calm Waves: calm Surface Temp: 53 down to 46 Location: west of I-Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 8 Total Boated:6 Species Breakdown: laker, steelhead, coho, chinook Hot Lure: orange/red spoons; green Trolling Speed: Down Speed: 2.5 Boat Depth: 200 fow + Lure Depth: hits from 55' and upward ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Fished with my buddy Anthony, landed a mixed bag - bite seemed the best when you found nice surface temp breaks and debris lines. Hottest set-up was free sliders on the riggers - 35' down and three color core. Hits came on NBK, Seasick Waddler, Ruby Red ,Golden orange icicle, and Steelie Dan. Wierdest thing today was an 8# laker on three color core over 350' of water. Orange and red spoons and green spoons were the best. No luck with deeper stuff or wire or flasher/fly set-ups. When we first started we were the only boat offshore, but then it looked like most boats slid out near us at the end of the morning. Saw one boat hook up with a throwback skipper. Good luck to all - the lake is transitioning and temp should be stratified in no time. - Chris ====================
  7. Hello fellas, Thanks for the feedback guys. Scotty - not solo, just me and my brother. Mark - you're right...lol Jim - call me anytime you're on the water - I'll see ya in the office soon, and we haven't forgot about getting over the see the birds with the kids, either. Take care bud. - Chris
  8. Fishing Report Your NameChris / Liv n' Ellie============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):5/28/11 Time on Water:7-9:30 Weather/Temp:foggy as heck Wind Speed/Direction:calm Waves: 1' rollers Surface Temp: 49-50 Location: west of River LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 4 Total Boated:4 Species Breakdown: chinook, steelhead Hot Lure: crazy B@#$H fly and spoon Trolling Speed: 2.5 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 80-150' Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS ==================== Foggy this morning so we waited until 6:15 or so to go out - it took us 45 minutes to get to the water we wanted. I actually did a complete 180 at one point while I was looking at my FF and not the compass and wound up off course. Thank god for autopilot. Fished deeper as soon as we found warmer offshore water that was semi-green. Steelhead liked Crazy B@#$h flasher/fly 100' out on wire and matching spoon on three color core. Small kings liked NBK spoon on riggers down 45' Good luck to all, - Chris
  9. YT, As always thanks for sharing - I always love reading your reports. - Chris
  10. Gentlemen, Anthony and I were fishing together on Saturday and many four letter words were coming from my mouth about the charter captain who pulled in front of us only 100 yds. away. Unfortunately this is not the only time I've seen a boat do this - literally we were almost on his boards he was that close by the time all was said and done. The tug boat situation was even worse and downright dangerous - kudos to the captain of the fishing vessel for keeping his cool and navigating appropriately. It takes a lot to get me going as this should be fun and enjoyed by all, but there's only two things that really burn my hairs: 1.) Setting up in front of me so close that I can see what lures you're using 2.) Charter Captains or first mates that "yell" at their clients when they try and get their point across about how to bring in a fish. I realize it has nothing to do with this, but just over the past few days I watched a video clip of a charter and I couldn't believe how the captain was yelling at two of his paying customers in the video on how to bring in the fish. I've been on the other end of that garbage and you bet I'll never set foot on that boat again. I've first mated on boats, fished tourneys with a few charters and payed myself for trips and unfortunately I've seen it way too much. In fact several years ago I actually payed for a charter with my brother b/c we were thinking about approaching the captain about possibly a joint charter business venture with him and buying his current boat (he was interested in buying a bigger boat) but after he and his brother chewed us both a new one after we lost a fish during a Pro-Am, that was it for us. Sorry to rant - and of course there are many, many respectful captains on this lake who are always courteous and eager to share information and I have talked with many of them and learned so much from their experience much greater than mine. By the way gang - Anthony is one of the most soft spoken and nicest guys you'll ever meet - you know this had to tick him off to rant like this...... - Chris
  11. Fishing Report Chris / Liv n' Ellie: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):5/21/11 Time on Water:6-11 AM Weather/Temp:60's sunny Wind Speed/Direction:west <5 mph Waves: <1 ft Surface Temp: upper 40's Location: east of Shipbuilders LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated:2 Species Breakdown: King, laker Hot Lure: king on NBK spoon; laker on Hammerhead chartreuse cowbells/spin n' glow Trolling Speed: 2.2-2.8 sog Down Speed: 1.8 - 2.5 Boat Depth: 12' to 75' Lure Depth: 45' rigger; 75' scraping bottom; 5 color core ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Fished with my buddy Anthony D. (Pike Hunter); no luck with the shoreline brown bite so we moved out deeper to find the elusive green water. Found nice water 50' and deeper, changed to a laker program and hit a nice 10-12# laker on a smaller Hammerhead cowbell/spin n' glow set-up. Next hit was on a 5 color core w/ a J-11 orange stick - lost the fish quickly. Final hit was a very nice king - around 15# on a NBK parked on a rigger at 45'. All in all we had a great time - as always it's nice to crush a chinookie!!! Good luck to all - special thanks to Anthony for a great day on the water, - Chris
  12. Some guys will attach a 50' piece of mono or braided line to the wire with an Allbright knot and then tie the mono or braid to the spool and apply a little tape over the knot. For me, I simply tie an overhand knot to attach the wire to the spool (I use 19 strand) and then wrap a piece of electrical tape over the knot on the arbor so it wont slip. This has always worked for me. Another tip - the first time you use the wire set-up, let out as much wire as you can with a dipsy and then reel it all back in so that it reels in nice and tight. GL, - chris

  14. If I'm not mistaken, the only way you can create 24 volts with two batteries is when you connect the positive terminal on one battery to the negative terminal on the other and then run the batteries in series. You will then be left with a negative terminal on one battery and a positive on the second battery creating 24 volts. Based on your description, you have not created 24 volts in series. Usually the dual battery switch is hooked up: Jumper the two negatives of each battery together, then you connect battery #1 positive to the switch #1, and battery #2 positive to switch #2 on the dual switch, Then the common wire on the switch goes to the starter on your motor. Make sure your second battery positive isn't connected to the common terminal on the dual switch. - Chris
  15. Thanks Bruce - I hope all is well bud - let me know when you want those rod holders my friend..... Good luck this year, - Chris
  16. Thanks again guys - let's hope it's a sign of good things to come this year. Mark - It had a belly full of alewives - can you say Red Label size Familiar Bite......lol. By the way - great pics of your bounty at the bar - very, very nice. Good luck fellas, - Chris
  17. Fishing Report Chris/Liv n' Ellie: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):5/9/11 Time on Water:6-9 AM Weather/Temp: 50's sunny Wind Speed/Direction: calm Waves: flat Surface Temp: 46-49 Location: front of I-Bay LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 3 Total Boated:3 Species Breakdown: king, coho Hot Lure: Live wire spinny/Hammer fly Trolling Speed: 2.6 sog Down Speed: 2.5 Boat Depth: 50-70' Lure Depth: 45' rigger, 100' wire #3 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS First trip of the year for me on my boat - I fished with Anthony (Pike Hunter Saturday) on his boat. I fished solo today and I fished a scum line between the muddy water and green pea-soup water in front of the bay. My first fish of the year was a nice king - likely mid teens fish on the wire diver, Live Wire SD/Hammer fly. Fish liked shiny chrome stuff when the sun came up. It is the only time I've ever had a wire diver hit on my shake-down voyage. Coho hit on a Dave's Salmon slapper SS and a Carmel Dolphin standard DW spoon. Good luck to all - I think this is going to be a stellar year, - Chris ====================
  18. Steve, Thanks for the great report and tip on the color pink. We'll be at it for the first time this year on Saturday and it'll be great to get out. Thanks again, - Chris
  19. Gentlemen, As always - I thank you all very kindly for your advice. At some point, I'd like to get an I-pad w/ AT&T 3G capability (you can pay for service month to month instead of a lengthy contract) so I can monitor up to the minute weather radar and use the Navionics INavX app. Thanks very much guys - man, technology really has come a long way...... - Chris
  20. Does anyone know what the 3G/4G coverage is on the lake, i.e. as far as how far off shore you can be to still have coverage? I typically fish out of I-Bay between Braddocks and Hedges. Thanks very much, - Chris
  21. Great job Anthony!!! I'm looking forward to a great season this year...... - Chris
  22. This might explain it a bit more: http://video.buffalonews.com/player/?id=2764 -Chris
  23. Ryan, Electric riggers are a great addition to your boat - once you have them you will never go back. If you fish 1-2 days per week, they are definitely justifiable. My guess is the $320 BJ riggers are probably the Sportsman riggers (2' fixed boom, one rod holder), but if they are the upgrade Sportsman (dual rod holders, ball cradle) then $320/piece is a good deal. Look on this board for used riggers and you can usually catch a good deal. Keep in mind the Sportsman riggers do NOT come with swivel mounts, and this feature might set you back another $120 for a pair of swivel mounts. Personally it's a must have. I have Big Jon riggers and love them - however, all the various electric riggers are well made and each person seems to have their favorite.. My personal favorite things about the BJ products is they are built like a tank, very easy to service (everything is open), simple to install, relatively fast retrieve, and they have awesome aluminum rod holders. If I was to "sum it up" I think the best thing you can look for in a set of DR's is to have good rod holders (2 per rigger), ball cradle, swivel base, good retrieve rate and good customer service. Good luck, - Chris Disclaimer - I have no personal or financial ties to Big Jon
  24. Way to go guys! You guys really have some stones to fish in those conditions with the freezing spray.....great job..... Thanks for sharing, - Chris
  25. Excavr, I use trolling bags only, usually only one bag and it can affect my steering like it does yours. However, I use an autopilot so it's less of an issue. When I moved the bag more amidships, instead of near the stern, it was much easier to steer. Good luck, - Chris
