2012 Memorial Day Derby 5 fish Tournament POLL
final flight replied to Hookedup's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
after this years terrible fishing i don't know if i could put a five fish limit togeather, did get a dandy pre-fishing ,but did not get into the big fish friday (too far to drive for weigh-in) bad choice on my part. i also think it would be hard to compete against the bigger boats that are running 10 rod spreads . -
dave, i had problems with my auto pilot (simrad) found a broken wire inside the compass. was realy quite simple to fix but you need a very small souldering iron.. if memory serves me right it would only change the degree of heading by turning off then back on. was a true night mare because it would work to hold a steady course IF THE WIND WAS NOT BLOWING....... works great now!!

drove to watkins today (wed.) to reserve a room for the national derby stopped at wild bills for some goodies then drove over to the launch, parking lot is plowed and a hole is punched through the snow bank to get to the launch. next day the wind forcast is under 10 mph. the blue bubble will float again!! (clute park launch) GOD bless rollie

split, are you saying that i'm a peice of crap, WE all know that floats..... or runs slightly below the surface.

after the b&b turney i was B.S.en with a gentelmen by the name of brooks and he infomed me that the seneca perch love the oak leaf grub. this the one time that i'm lost on a type of bait. i been looking for info. on this critter and can't find anything out about them. so if anyone is willing to share some basics with me i would apreciate it ... like..were to look for them, what do they look like, what color are they, how do you keep them, can you raise them, is there a limit on the number, can you cross state lines with them. then there is this group of questions..how do you hook them ,what size hook, do you jig them or lay them on the bottom or run them under a float. have been trying for years to figure the seneca perch out so it's worth the two hour trip up to fish for them, normally give up after a couple of hours and go back to trolling for trout! thanks in advance.....rollie

A little confusion.....
final flight replied to orangediablo's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
don't forget to add a couple of assasins into your arsenal. they have a great speed range and a totally different action than the spinnie's. 8" took fish all day long last friday. they are being made by R&R (mytacklebox.com) GOD bless rollie -
first thing i would try/do is put wire on my rods, then set the outside dipsy's on a 2 1/2 or 3 setting and stretch them back to 240 - 280 your center rod would be changed over to a thumper rod so you could read the speed at or near your target depth. play with colors of dipsy. i normally run black in the morning and on dark days, chrome or shinny green on bright days. i really hope you start putting fish in the boat but remember to take notes on what is working and when it worked. things on the big pond change very quickly so don't stick with on set-up too long before you change it out. GOD bless and good luck rollie

for added fun... bottom spoon out 10' from ball fixed cheater at 10' then throw a slider on. makes a great mess when you bring back to the boat. this was not done on purpose just a SMALL brain fart!!
-
bloody death spinny and BW purple poofster high rigger early, deep rigger all day long....NK purple dalmation as the slider

What the DEC is up to behind the scenes!
final flight replied to Yankee Troller's topic in Open Lake Discussion
i would say that we need to really get behind (with our finacial support) all the pen rearing projects that are in place right now!! my beleif is that they are the reason there will be a 40 lber caught this fall and lets not forget the people on the other side of the pond! GOD bless rollie -
bought mine at Henchnens in henderson harbor...they do spred things out.. but remember to add around 15 ft. to your cable lenghts to hit desired depth that is if your below 100 ft. (15 % loss in depth) the ones i run track out far enough that i loose them on the fishfinder.have not crossed cables when i have been running them nor have i seen them spin. i run scottie riggers so they go down very fast. only down side that i have seen is when i'm running double dipsy's and forget to move the inside deep dipsy to the forward rod holder. if you do it twice like i have you wont forget the third time. BIG time tangle...

thats odd my boat the pink&purple has never taken a fish, what speeds are you running i'm at 1.7-1.9 at the ball no idea what sog is, i've turned it off trying to take away a peice of the puzzle. any size on the silvers?

greenish water ,warmer surface temps. it's time for the R&R razors. fished sat. did 4 nice browns all between 2-4.5 lbs.biggest came on a new pattern that dave sent for me to try-very bright green frog type of pattern, others came on the golden walleye. hot bite for lakers was a big weenie agrivated frog parked at 65 and 75. spoon bite was on the dipsy's 180 and 210. down temp. was 55 degs. at 60 ft. ran the 80-90 contour line east side from meyers to the red can. not much bait but there were hungry fish from 40 ft. to the bottom. GOD bless rollie
-
lay them on there back in one hand then use other hand to gently push from the rectum foward, several light times works better than one hard push. then send them to the bottom torpedo style. this only has to be done for the ones that come from the 70 ft. range or below.

scott, sent in my 20 bucks before forms were advalible, hope to get a reply via e-mail. if not can you get me a phone number to call. thanks rollie

i've dropped two probes this year, one on the fish hawk and one on the depth raider. if i were to buy another speed and temp unit it would be the depth raider because of the replacement cost. both units work about the same but the fish hawk factory settings were WAY off from the actual speed readings!!! i have found it best to set your speed by watching your cables and rod tips, then run at the down speed that your probe is telling you. Temp. is what i focus on first due to currents at different depths. as far as the most important piece of electronics on the boat it's a tough call but the fish(depth) finder is my choice due to the amount of time spent on the finger lakes, 15 ft. one way or the other will change your depth by 20-60 feet. gps is great to give you a heads up for changing depths but some portions of the navtronic maps are not real accurate, auto pilot is almost a must when fishing alone and very nice when you need to net fish or you have doubles on.BUT........ to really enjoy your fishing take grandpas row boat out and flat line !!!!!!!!!!!!
