I believe Ray has valid points, and until someone can come up with another reason for dwindling deer populations I will go along with that thought. But don't live in NY so I can't comment from personal experience, but in NJ I can tell you that the deer herd has been hit hard in the last 10 years or so but not by coyotes buy by hunters. I am a firm believer that the auto insurance companys in NJ (and there are alot) effectivly lobbyed the state legislature for a large reduction in the herd. Deer car collisions in NJ average about 30K per year that are reported. This apparently are paying out millions in claims per year. In the late 90's a herd of about 200,000 was reported annually. Since the liberal hunting seasons were put in place whereas you can hunt from early sept. till mid february with various weapons and with all the proper permits take a deer doe per day during that time period. I think you can take 6 bucks with all the permits offered with the various weapons. Recent laws passed to enhance the killing are crossbows and hunting on sundays as well as within 150' of a occupied dwelling with a bow. With all this, the herd as reported recently in down to around 130,000. With 50,000ish taken by hunters and 30,000 hit by cars, its a wonder the herd sustains itself. I will say one thing, the quality of the buck is evident in recent years. But gone are the days of seeing herds of deer in the 30's and 40's running together in the late season like in the 1970's and 80's. If we had the coyote problem NY has this herd could be decimated in short order. My prediction is in the future NJ is going to be a bow hunting only state with limited gun hunting on large state owned land, and that will result in a trophy hunting state like no other, provided we don't have a coyote population explosion

Apparently NJ bears have a liking for goats lately. http://m.newjerseyhills.com/mobile/arti ... 03286.html http://www.northjersey.com/news/1067186 ... oats_.html BTW these locations are about 30 miles apart, so its not the same bear. Poor Clyde

Let me clear this up... if beer is gonna be involved in hunting while in NJ, usually your drinkin while driving (preferably at night) on the highway and hitting them with ur truck. No need for shootin out the window while Earl holds the light.. (like in Greene NY) BTW if your lucky enuf to score, the State police will issue a transportation tag for your troubles so you can take your kill home Great buck, congrats

Had this guy within 50 yds this morning. He was doggin a doe hard, never could get a shot. Then a broken horn buck tried to get involved in his love interest, so he pinned his ears back and got tough chasing the little buck off. Woods were alive this AM. Saw 6 different bucks in a 2 hour period, all on move birddoggin' except one. Had a 6 pt come right to the corn block for a bite while this big guy was tryin to get some a short distance away. I hadn't had him on camera till yesterday, and only saw him for the first time this morning. Hope he stays in the area.

Happy ending?? I thought that cost $200 and usually involves an asian girl?? -
Well I usually don't worry about much mainly because my 40 cal. travels with me in the woods during bow season. I don't need some sow kickin my a## because I walked between her and her cubs. As far as getting mugged, that would be like christmas in October

Greg, not long ago I was at a Dunkin Donuts dive thru and this guy walks out in the middle of the day to dumpster dive for lunch. The guy at the drive thru says this is a daily occurance with at least 5 bears raiding the dumpster daily. This is along a major highway in a residential/commercial area.

Yes we have a bear problem for sure. All over north Jersey but some pocket areas are worse than others. The deer dont like heavy bear activity. Some days you will see more bears than deer. A season is on for this year but it runs the same 6 days as the shotgun deer season the first week of December. It should be in the spring IMO. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

This is a crazy approach that I knew a real horn addict applied to getting a totally nocternal slammer buck. In fact he has done it more that once. Identify his core bedding area if possible, then go in and bump him out once to see where he was. If you know where he goes at night approach the bed from another direction and climb with a portable right in the bed area, but heres the catch, Do this at 1 or 2 AM. Sit there all night and wait till he comes back some time before daylight. He should bed somewhere in the immediate area. Even though the big guys are nocturnal, they have to get up and move around in that very small area within their bed area throughout the day.. During that time you just might have an encounter. Now I wouldn't do this, but it has been accomplished.
