After running an Evinrude ETEC for 16 years here's my thoughts on plugs. BRP Evinrude called for the spark plugs to be indexed to the injectors which requires some time, and some plugs won't index so you have to shuffle the position. Based on that alone my suggestion is to learn the built in fogging procedure. I kept a copy of the steps on a clip by my toolbox- once you are used to doing it the process is quite simple and fast. I also found that my ETEC liked plugs so changing plugs every two or three years is required. If you see issues at idle or low rpms change plugs. Proper plug indexing and use of correct plugs will help with life. Proper torque is also needed as the threads in the head can strip easily and a dab of never seize is a good idea.

Dunkirk has been rough the last few days with north winds and that will pack the warm water. Might want to start in 80 and head north. See what screen shows but expect fish 40 to 60 down. It was rough enough on Monday that the Marina emailed slip holders to check moorings and bilge pumps on their boats.

Good temperature profile off Dunkirk today with good screen and consistent bite. Currents not bad either. Some good steelhead in the mix too. -
Was out of Dunkirk Wednesday morning until wind chased us off. Lake had flipped with a different profile even out in 90 fow. Now with a hard West blow through Sunday, things will be messed up. Should have warm water back but strong currents from all the Ohio water that gets pushed to Buffalo end. Probably most stable water will be well off shore and down speed will be all over the place.

If diver tumbling too fast- keep tension on divers of any type. I’ve un SD’s for years on both braid and wire with zero line twist issues.

Are you using a swivel at the end of the 30lb slide line along with a short leader to your lure? Don’t let the SD slide all the way to the lure. Fast deploy can twist things up too.

What size wire are you using and how long is your run? That includes wire to your fuse holder. I rewired my HS Cannons using 6 AWG cable with hydraulic crimped ends and circuit breaker for same this season and that has cured my issues with slow speed/voltage drop. You shouldn’t be melting fuse or holder. Suspicious that is at least part of your problem and needs to be heavier. Check your Perko switch for corrosion too- those switches due fail. -
Friday the 19th is Big Fish Friday with Main Event Saturday the 20th. Weigh in both days at Sunset Beach. Rules a bit different for Friday start but Saturday is a Shotgun start of whole field. Parking can be a problem as that is pretty congested area without an event. Just be aware of what’s going on.

A heads up to guys thinking about going to the Catt this weekend be aware that Sunset Bay Shootout is 19th and 20th. The majority of the field are trailer boats and that’s a 200 boat field plus or minus-lots of congestion in a pretty small area. Dunkirk was busy last Saturday and Barcelona has been that way for a few weeks. Good fishing and the word is out.

The location of the loose rivets will go a long way in telling you what the issue is. If it is in the hull itself in the running area that would point to maybe not handling the offshore swells like you imagine. A bracket mounting issue would likely show in transom and where bracket ties to internal stringers. I have a bracket mount glass boat and my transom has reinforcement plates just above main stringers. 20 or 30 loose rivets is a big deal and needs to be addressed/repaired correctly. I doubt this a trailering issue. -

I tried the 12 oz and it definitely will get you down. The issue I had was unless you cleared the whole side you couldn’t deploy. I wished I had tried the 8oz or 4 oz instead for a snap weight on leadcore. -
Big difference in price- 20 gauge duplex marine 70 cents a foot and 2/0 is about 7 bucks a foot single wire plus your crimped ends that need a hydraulic crimping tool. I added heavier cable for my downriggers and an ACR myself this spring and good marine components aren’t cheap.

What are you using 20 gauge wire for? Trolling motor hookup uses much heavier wire especially on a long run. They probably also installed a circuit breaker too and additional cables for battery switch. What’s your material cost and labor cost? Marine wiring is more $$$ than auto wiring as well. Go over the bill with the people who did the work.

Before Subtrolls, Fish Hawks and Depth Raiders most guys used downrigger cable angle and dipsey rod load to judge speed. Just as important is to watch your spread so it’s square - if it’s off to the side that is another sign of current effect- adjust heading to stay square. Those old LJ speed deals that you hang off the side have been around for 40 or more years. Save your $$$ for down speed and temp unit. -
Requirement of spare batteries is not true by either state or USCG inspectors. Batteries have printed expiration dates and I believe the regulations state specific length before replacement. Normally they just turn on electric flare and that is it. It’s been my experience that inspectors have made positive comments when they see the electronic flair on board.
