  1. Good going, sounds like you ran into a few tackle busting locomotives!
  2. Brett's is a good option! I've done business w/ them & no complaints, another option would be to get a pair of combos from one of LOU's supporting members who also offers a good deal on dipsy combos; http://www.atommiktrollingflies.com/dip ... _combo.htm A word of caution about the Convectors though; since they started making them in China (several years now) many people experience problems w/ these reels after about a year or so of use. I've had far less trouble w. the Daiwa Sealine 47 LC, though it does not take in line as smoothly and rapidly as the Convector. There is simply no way around the fact that you get what you pay for, and if you have the means I'd actually suggest entertaining the idea of getting the Tekota 600 LC reels.
  3. Ditto what RR said above. No problem w/ coated cable & short stop. It's not really a big deal to swap out the cables & doesn't take long!

  5. The Finger lakes fishing community is truly blessed to have Scott at the wheel of these derbies. He puts a tremendous amount of time in to make sure these events go smoothly and that everybody feels like a part of it! Hats off to to you Scott, and thanks so much
  6. 13# Atomik torpedos will far out perform any pancake and reasonably priced too!
  7. It's not a secret (I was sticking it to Frisco on an old joke) I just drill out the bottom of a reg mag dipsy so I can make it fit onto a large SD. then I use SD's biggest ring. When I tried to get the SD w/ their 'bigger weight' to match a reg Mag dipsy's dive curve it just seemed to come up short, so I tried this and I'm happier w/ it. -Andy Yo, DButts http://slidediver.com/cart/home.php
  8. You might want to consider getting a good aftermarket chip for your gps plotter, that way you know where you are at on the map w/out a lot of figuring (sometimes it's best to be raising the riggers instead of wondering whether you should or shouldn't). I've got the Navionics Hot Maps Premium in my Lowrance Global 5200. This chip is also compatible w/ my little handheld gps that I use as a backup and other stuff. Navionics has a compatibility chart for matching maps w/ units. -Andy
  9. Hey Tom, that looks like a heck of a good time! Just gotta tell ya bout' the time we were bullhead fishing w/ the kids at my family's camp in the Berkshires and one of the unattended rods got dragged off the dock by a big one- long and short of it was we finally found it the next day while snorkeling and by gum we got the fish too!
  10. Vague response; I sent you a pm w/ my 'secret' directions for modifying the SD to achieve Mag dipsy performance levels
  11. I've got an 97' 19' Islander w/ the I/O, integrated kicker and an Autopilot. This boat can handle some pretty tough conditions and if it's too rough for my rig I guess I don't need to go out that bad!
  12. Good going guys Sounds like a blast! -Andy
  13. Tim, keep us in the loop on that 200-400 search. Hope to get out Tues... -Andy
  14. Same recommendation as years past; Cayuga. Launch at Myers & wet lines where the weed mats are scarce (check posts b/c this changes frequently). See you around- Andy
  15. DW Bloody death spoon & spinny w/ purple flies seem to work best on overcast days for me.
  16. Cayuga's got bigger' n better fish anyway
  17. FF line?????? I'm running 30# PowerPro and flourocarbon leaders. Can the weed mats be seen so that I can avoid them? Is there any reason to stay in 70' or less of water up there? I'm assuming the fish are oriented more around temperature than structure so that I can troll anywhere in the thermocline. Should I pay more attention to bottom structure and troll the thermocline where it intersects the bottom? Thx "FF" is flea flicker. I run 30lb Ande to the fc leader on my rigger rods, but the weeds will probably have you in & out of the water enough to keep the fleas cleaned off. I Don't know what you are running for dipsies but if you run braid , you might want to consider going to 65lb power pro for next year, it's the thickness of the line that inhibits the ability of the fleas to 'grab on'. The lakers will be anywhere from 60 fow to the middle of the lake, down 60-110, silvers will be scattered from the t-cline up, run cheaters for them & hope for the best- if you hit the LLs don't leave em, work the pod at the depth you found em. -Andy
  18. Oops! Thought I saw South 15mph, but it's 5-10. Should be good to go! -Andy
  19. Yes, many of us fish the fingers all winter, though only certain landings remain open and 'ice free'. Certain precautions and a healthy respect for cold water issues should be observed. Ontario fleas are actually easier to get off the line than the fleas on some of the fingers, not sure whats up w/ that! Seneca is probably gonna get bumpy tomorrow, especially by mid lake and on north. She can get nasty in a hurry!
  20. Started archery practice on the 1st. Actually I'm pumped for the early goose season- only 25 days on that one! -Andy

  22. I got two thoughts; 1. If you are really gonna run the rod down the chute most of the time then you'll be better off w/ a longer rod b/c it will lift the line out of the fish landing zone behind the boat and minimze conflicts w/ a fish on the riggers. So, looking at it from that angle, the dipsy rod would probably be best. 2. On the other hand I would encourage you to run the 300' out to the side on either big boards (my preference) or a Church Walleye inline board. You will be happier overall w/ the wider spread and minimal conflicts that come w/ running cores and coppers out on boards as opposed to all the b.s. possibilities associated w/ chute lines. For running the 300' off boards, I'd go w/ the 6'6" MH. I use6'6" Ugly Stiks for rigger rods on Ontario and I really like them. Just to let you know you can get a 7' Okuma Classic leadcore/copper rod for about $29. P.S. I'm not familiar w/ the DM 45 reel, but I'm somewhat concerned that it won't hold the amount of line you are talking about & I also think you may experience problems getting the copper to mono leader junction thru the eye of the level wind.I use Penn reels for my copper setups, they are very rugged. Not trying to bum you out, just my 2 cents!
