Years ago I took a liking to the smaller size silver streak for spring browns, especially one called Janet Jackson. They have since changed the name to Pink Alwaife. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I have a 93 Sea Nymph GLS 175 Which has an aluminum floor from the factory, just wood over the gas tank. I know Lowe was an OMC like Sea Nymph but didnt know about Grumman. If it is OMC it would have an alum floor in 96. My transom is still good. That always depends if everything was properly sealed during its life. A little help for converting mech to hydraulic
lrg355 replied to Andre wallyandre's topic in This Old Boat
I didn't realize seastar made this setup for converting a rack and pinion cable steer mercruiser to a hydraulic helm. Going to seriously consider it with intent to interface a Lowrance Hydraulic Autopilot. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app- 1 reply

Rigger release, FishHawk and weight setup- need some advice
lrg355 replied to 1lastweekend's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I made a comment last year about losing a ball when the clip on a Blacks release broke at the bend. The release was a few years old and I remove the weight after each trip so the clip was opened many times. The fatigue and the wear from weight moving back and forth caused the breakage. Point being I replace the release on the probe downrigger at the beginning of each season. I use Cannon STX riggers and they are scary violent on start and stop. Tried Amish snubber but they are large and seem to increase blowback some. Tried the Dreamweaver snubber that is two twisted clear bands with a generic blacks type release between them. Was a bit too elastic for my taste so I disassembled it and used one of the twisted bands per rigger just above the ball. This works well to calm down the cannon stx stops and starts. Another thing to be aware of is the eye hook area on the Fishawk. The piece both top and bottom is a stamped part and has a sharp edge on the punch exit side. I deburr that sharp edge very slightly because I dont want it rubbing and wearing the clips, especially on the top one which can cause a probe loss. I vote for leaving well enough alone especially if no leakage is evident and since they did not spin by the impact gun. Apply more 3M caulk around them and remount. If they spin when retightening then that is another story necessitating redo. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

If your kicker has a steering tube as most have you could hook up a lowrance system. You would need to get a cylinder from a hydraulic steering system and install on your kicker. You get the pump with the lowrance system. You wont have a hydraulic helm But that will not matter. Lowrance HDS gen 2 or later running the pump only(no helm)to a cylinder in the steering tube will work great. You must get the cylinder separately. Many years ago I was given a black PVC tarp that is used to cover tractor trailer loads. Very heavy. Build a 2x4 frame over the 18 ft boat that looks like a tent. Tie the tarp down with many bungee cords. Never had a problem for the last 15 years doing this except for mice and red squirrels. Been using mothballs in the boat lately and that appears to be working on the rodents. The truck tarp probably has 20 more years in it. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Should also mention that I did not like the idea of using the screws provided for mounting in aluminum. Seems like they were meant only for fiberglass. I used Stainless 1/4-20 button head screws instead and plenty of the 3m polyurethane sealant. Worked well. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I have them on 2 boats and they work well. Put them on a Smokercraft Ultima 192 that had a porposing problem no matter how far the motor was trimmed down. Solved it and helped get on plane faster even though getting on plane was acceptable. Also, later put them on a Sea Nymph GLS 175 that rode rough in 2 foot + waves because of difficulty keeping the bow down without using excessive trim. Helped with that also. Paid about $100 a set for factory seconds that had a cosmetic defect. Cant see anything actually wrong with them. Bought them online but cant remember where. Usually can find videos of most any mechanical maintenance if you search online. About a year ago I was changing the rear brakes on a Volvo S60. Retracting the caliper piston had me completely frustrated. Was a very odd procedure that was explained by an online video. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

When you drain the block make sure it is completely drained especially if you dock or run in a muddy area. I always pull the drain plugs, let it drain, pull the lower end of the water pump hose, and some other hoses. I then use compressed air and a cone shaped fitting to blow into the block and headers. Plenty more mud, sludge and water still comes out. Started this procedure after a friend lost a block to trapped mud and water when he thought the water was all out. black box ?? testing boat
lrg355 replied to line guy's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Made the switch comment because I thought you were worried about electrolysis. Wont catch more fish but the Cannon riggers always pull a small current when plugged in, even when not in use. The switch will stop that. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
black box ?? testing boat
lrg355 replied to line guy's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Get a battery switch. Hook everything through the switch so all can be turned off except the connection for the automatic line on the bilge pump. Put that directly on the battery or the battery lug (input) side of the switch. Flip the switch when you leave and it will turn everything off except the automatic bilge pump. Put it out of sight and you will also get a bit of boat theft protection (from amateur thieves anyway!). Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app -
Late October
lrg355 replied to GreasyLuck's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I tried early spring brown tactics in Oct and caught plenty of smallmouth bass but few browns. Going to try the 62 degree water meeting bottom tactic this Oct. Now retired so I can pick nice days. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app- 1 reply

I lost one like that in the spring of 2018 in that area. Okuma Convector on it with 12 lb test Maxima. Cable from the planing board got caught on one of the eyes and lifted it out of the rod holder. Had eight of em for spring browns, now I have seven. Probably shot by now. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I am very familiar with Towne Marine in Bloomsburg. Bought 2 boats from him over the last few years. Something strange about him handling an Etec as new. They are a Yamaha dealer. I asked about Evinrude and Merc a few years ago and he said they don't deal with them. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I used the smart tabs. No electrics or hydraulics involved. You can set the load higher on one side by moving the self contained cylinder to a different mount hole. Should help your problem. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Have a look a Nautico Smart Tabs. They can be set so you can put more lift on one side of the boat constantly. I have the on my 2 boats and they solved my problems very well. $99 on line at Iboats They call them a factory cosmetic blem at that price but I can see nothing wrong with them. 88 or newer should have the short stop board. Trouble is the relays on the board burned up because they are on Omron relay rated for 5 ramps. The momentary surge on start is probably 4 times that. Most people remove the short stop board and put in a switch to do the job. I have replaced the relays years ago, very tedious job to carve out the epoxy to get at the solder joints of the relay on the board. I soldered wires on the joints and put on a higher rated relays. Worked good till I sold the boat. Now I have mag 5st and no problems. They are violently fast on start and stop so I use the Dreamweaver snubber and have had no issues since. Lost a few weights before using the snubbers. Sent from my SM-J737V using Lake Ontario United mobile app
