  1. Canadian officials are expected to release a statement today clarifying how they plan to enforce their regulations on the St. Lawrence River http://blog.syracuse.com/outdoors/2011/06/canadians_expected_to_clarify.html
  2. US give them what info? don't you have your registration number on your boat in big numbers and letters??? if they key it in on the water or while towing through customs and you will get hassled [ Post made via Windows Smartphone ]
  3. I don't think the Canadian NATIONAL laws are set by body of water or even province. Apparently, you are right in that you only need to call, but supposedly it needs to be make from special border phones set up at SOME unmanned ports, or else go to an official port and do it in person. I would like to see a special number you can call from your cell if you will not be making landfall, just fishing etc. The way they have clarified this, it is too oppressive and WILL hurt local tourism and the economy on these border waters as well as putting the local charter capts out of business Our govts definitely need to find a workable solution!
  4. Either unenforced till now or many of the Canadian agents themselves have been passing incorrect interpretations among themselves. State dept and Highest Canadian authorities have confirmed the need to check in. Evading the authorities is some of the WORST advise I've heard. Don't think for a moment they don't have a database and are not flagging your boats registration number if they got it through their binoculars. Try taking your boat over via land or don't manage to evade them the next time and they will be doing a lot more than giving you a just thousand dollar fine!
  5. Read this article if you haven't already. The highest authorities on both sides have clarified that if you cross the border into Canada to fish you must check in. Sure, you can press your luck and might not get caught but I'm not about to roll the dice. http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20110622/NEWS02/306229942 Although north country boaters have believed for years that they could venture into Canadian waters without reporting to authorities as long as they do not set anchor or tie up to a dock, the Canadians have taken a firm position that the impression is wrong.
  6. I think a LOU side-pot is in order...Time to start placing those bets! As the odds maker: Nalod's coming off that 50 inch hawg from the end of last year...got some mo' going. Blueye is Mr Wooly Bully extrordinaire, but it's not a casting bite this year, hmmm. Solgrande...hasn't been fishing much this year, but he's a consistent producer on Chaut Zach: a slow season opener, but he's got all the colors in his box (even firetiger now!) Ronix, the newcomer. no pures yet, but his freshness and determination makes him a real wildcard Old Man. Can't lose...but can win either if he doesn't play Stinky Finger...you in? Hope not! You got too much experience Nitro...got a good batting average going this year, but I've been known to go three strikes and out too But the real winner will be ( drum roll, please): The Muskie baitfund. thanks again Larry for putting on what is sure to be another great tournament! So what's everyone else's pre game day prediction??? And who's in on that side pot?
  7. He must be working hard on lure orders... He's usually a motor mouth here. Either that or after Saturday he figures he needs some 'practice' before the tourney ...and with that, let the smack talk begin!
  8. ALL freshwater [ Post made via Windows Smartphone ]
  9. Schumer has weighed in as well, and he is chairman of the homeland security/immigration/border subcommittee http://schumer.senate.gov/Newsroom/record.cfm?id=333239 Hopefully we will get some positive resolution on this.
  10. Thanks for the info. We got to about 10-15 ft of them, but with the stained water and low light, just couldn't make them out. We did try twitching a few baits but couldn't get any interest. Will have to try again I guess.
  11. Alright, enough dinkin around already, what's the hold up? This is straightforward stuff. ...cuomo, I give you till Thursday to sign this thing! If it's not done by then...I'll just have to wait longer
  12. I saw that too...but what are your other two top lakes? I only see three listed I'm not particularly a bass head, but it seems Chautauqua might be on that list. Guys come from a couple hours outta Ohio for the nys opener every year.
  13. This has implications beyond the Larry as well. Being a very wide river, there is plenty of water on the American side to be able to stay well clear of the 'grey zone'. But what about the niagara? Not nearly as wide and the West branch is nearly all Canadian waters. Since there are no 'welcome to Canada' signs in the water it's very easy for someone to slip into Canadian waters unknowingly...or for the canadian authorities to 'mistakenly' accuse someone of being over the border ( if navigation on the US side there is even possible?). Pretty much makes the houses on the west branch on grand island a great view of essentially unusable water. Leave the boat on the trailer and take up dock fishing...bye bye property values there if this holds! Cuts a lot of lake Erie from Buffalo out of the equation, as well as similar scenarios across the great lakes
  14. Hopefully you got it fixed, but if not and need a new rotor, try waymires.com or call them. Called and ordered a new caliper from them a couple weeks ago, Tuesday the day after memorial day when everyone and their mother was dealing with their boat and trying to get parts. Well, they shipped it out the same day and had it by Thursday coming from indiana. Great cust service and super fast as well.
  15. A wise merc mechanic has said always start at the source: the impeller. Like hank said, Make sure that you indeed haven good water supply coming in as the basis to start from, then worry about everything 'downstream' - especially if as you said, the impeller has not been replaced recently, since it is indeed a 'wear item'. That said I'd do the 'stats at the same time, given the minimal cost and involvement. That is where my money is as far as the problem goes. Sounds like it's sticking. When you turn off the motor, no coolant flows, and temps continue to rise a bit, which finally get it hot enough to free the suspect stat and get it working again until it sits again at the dock for a while and the cycle repeats. Good luck. Oh and yes...do not wait. You could be sitting on a potential time bomb, a very expensive one at that!
  16. +1. When my high pressure pump went (intermittent failure) it was only evident under extreme loads, like getting up on plane, and sometimes at wot- high fuel demand times. Sputtered pretty good. The rest of the time it ran like a champ.
  17. Ok, here is a real story for ya...hope this whets your appetite for the tourney Went two for three trolling yesterday. 32 and 38 in the boat. nothing huge but a nice start. All came during the first few hours after daybreak. The 3rd wasn't on long, couple head shakes and gone. Here is the 38. This guy rolled up in the line a bit but fortunately no major damage care of the 4 ft flouro leader Chautauqua here we come
  18. Well at least those cats will get ya excited (until I see that it's not a nice pike fighting like all get out ) Speaking of fish sunning themselves...I noticed a ton of good sized fish up on the surface at cross last weekend, especially at dusk- they where everywhere we looked. Never got close enough to figure out what they were...spooked easily. I suspected carp given how many there were, but have seen esox do that as well. have you seen this on cross or know what they are?
  19. expiration, aka the 'sunset provision' [ Post made via Windows Smartphone ]
  20. I like 390 to I86. takes you right to mid lake. few minutes longer than the thruway but a much more scenic drove [ Post made via Windows Smartphone ]
  21. easy...just don't run 3 lines/man then. thats the beauty of it...no ones forcing you to take advantage of it [ Post made via Windows Smartphone ]
  22. NYSDEC is already stocking 1.5 and 2 inch in many waters here beyond that size the cost is unsustainable. Nice to see our state is not behind the curve for once.
  23. That would mean it just needs cuomos signature then to be official, no? I'd gladly hit the road and put it in front of him myself today if it meant a couple extra Muskie lures in the water for the opener tomorrow!
  24. Just added my "+1" to the paid list!
  25. sounds like a good day overall. any of them come jigging? [ Post made via Windows Smartphone ]
