  2. Ronix, before you go to Cross take a look at this site: USGS Seneca River The water there is up a good five ft or so above summer levels. so not only is it closed to navigation, the flow is so high that the clarity is like mud. Look for a gauge height down closer to 75 ft before you start considering it (summer is around 73.5 give or take). You can set up email alerts based on gauge height from the USGS site Usually up for only a couple weeks or so around the thaw but the wet spring is screwing things up. I hope they start lowering it soon! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  3. after bring woken up twice by getting smacked in the nose by tent, i thought it best to reposition [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

  7. using a snap for the leader allows you to change it out more easily on the water if it gets nicked. 80lb fluoro is difficult to get tied correctly and tightly and doesnt tie well to such thin lines either [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  8. I use 30lb mono- winds faster and you use less of it because of the larger diameter. yeah ibraid may have a tendency to dig in more to larger diameter line, but I put a strip of tape across the mono once its spooled on. this prevents it from loosening up while you're working the knot and winding the mono. the tape and tight mono both prevent the braid from digging into it...besides you really shouldn't be into the mono one the water if you have enough braid.
  9. I like to have a couple hundred feet of braid on my casting rods, about double my longest cast. i went into the backyard and made a cast with a heavy lure and then tied the line to something and walked it back and forth (i.e. 2x casting distance) pulling line off the spool as I went. then cut and tie uni uni knot and wind up the braid onto the reel on top of the mono. better to start with too much mono backing and having to strip the braid back off and cut out some mono than to start with too little mono IMHO. after the first time you will have a sense for the right amt of backing. another way is to figure out how much braid you need first as above, wind it onto the spool first. then tie on an wind the mono over top and cut when full. then strip it all off (not on a spool but straight out into the yard), then wind it all back on starting with the mono end this time. 10. I like my navionics on the iPad and fishfinder/gps...cndg is in HD...contour mapped down to the sq ft. For hardcopy, sportsmans connection book is good and has gps coords, but not HD. pretty sure I've seen it in both dicks and gander. http://www.sportsmansconnection.com/newyork/fishingbooks/western/ [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  11. A little more on the subject from the late 1870s clouds this a little more. Suggests to me that any musky caught in Cayuga was either an ID error (likely) or a rare or errant fish (possibly) but certainly suggests that if present, they were not at all common. Not sure if this google link will expire but here it is: Annals of the New York State Academy of Sciences v4 [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  12. Ok so you got me interested...in doing a little search of my own I believe that it's tough to know if the terms they used back then meant the same as today. for instance as recently as the 20s there were something like 8 species of esox including three species of muskie. So i think its tough to definitively conclude the fish we call muskies were indeed in Cayuga - at least to me. Maybe there is more info from the earlier days that could be found somewhere? If you're interested in the scientific classification, descriptions and views from 90 years ago, this is pretty interesting. Maybe you've seen it http://www.archive.org/details/pikepickerelmuska09weed You can click on the read online option to the left to see the scanned version with pics [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  13. could they be labeling pickerel as pike and pike as musky? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

  16. LOL....no not broken Capt Larry, just swamped this week...15+ hr workdays suck. told Zach I'm gonna try but have to find time during a normal work hours to get the boat, get the braked fixed (dragging) and see how my schedule for the Mondya after shakes out...may have to head out of town Sunday eve, and that would take me out it. could be close to a game time decision. If I do, it would be leave Fri afternoon, head back early sun afternoon...if I go, Bob, you're welcome to ride down...

  21. Finally! They have been talking about making it a trophy tiger fishery for at least a couple years now. Glad to see it moving ahead, but I personally would like to see the number even higher than 40. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  22. Very cool Zach How can I get my hands on one of those softtails? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
  23. Yeah I didn't put too much time against any of the numbers, since they are so outdated, but the patterns/habits and locations etc give a little bit of insight into the fishery and suggest a bit about where and how to target...if you can weed through the outdated stuff. Would love to see an update to this. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]
