hey sol im convinced those magdas would not have blown out with braid. i think its the extra pressure that happens when mono is spooled while its stretched that did it. have you thought about putting the braid on those and the mono on the depth masters? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Ray, you reminded me I wanted to ask what brand those holders are. They look look like folbes. I've heard great things about them but Im not a big fan of the clamshell design, for down rods at least. Trust issues about the rod popping out I guess, a lot of guys run that style just fine. Quite the debate over plastic, those against typically haven't run it; but I haven't had a problem. 65lb line gave out before the rod or holder the one time the aforementioned 'drag n snag' issue happened to me. Plenty of other times I thought they would break...they flex but never break. #1 Dypsies at 3.5-4 with the ring on. No prob. Got lots of trust now. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

That looks pretty sweet old man! A lot nicer than the one I've got rigged up with a 2x4. My first set up was a daiwa accudepth plus 47lca which I bought as a combo with a 9.5 ft gander dipsy rod. It's been solid but the stock drags suck, so I upgraded those to carbontex for 10 apiece. Been good ever since and the drags are incredible now. My latest reels are okuma convector 55L for the lead core paired with okumas classic pro GLT copper rod. I really like these convector reels and my next purchase will be the line counter version in the 30 size which I will put mono on for short lining. its a bit more dough than the accudepth but worth it IMHO. As sol will tell you, be careful with plastic spools particularly if you are going to run mono. Otherwise his okuma magdas seemed great when I was out with him. As for rods, even the inexpensive trolling rods are good from my experience and what I've read. The dipsy rods seem to work well but I like the solid guides on the Classic Pros. Anyone know where I can still get my boat wrapped, hopefully close to Webster? Usually go to McMillan but they are all out of wrap. 18.5ft outboard. Short of that, I'd settle for some inexpensive indoor storage till march 15th, if it's comparable in price to wrapping. Guess fishing into December has it's downsides... Cross really isn't that busy on the weekends, no more so than conesus. Yep holiday weekends are zoo-ey everywhere. Weekdays you will have it to yourself. If you go there and see it for yourself, you will see that it's a full fledged lake, even though they call it a 'widening of the river'. It's not quite like fishing the finger lakes because of the river, which is a blessing and a curse if you are new to Cross. The river adds a lot to your fishing options...you won't be bored fishing there. Lake, river, slack water-tons of variety. But it adds another dimension to the fish movement and location. because the fish are free to roam up and down the river, and the oxygenation and temperature impact of the water flow, the fish may or may not be where you would expect to find them in the finger lakes. At conesus, you know they have to be in there somewhere, but not so on cross. So it can be more difficult to figure out. We bought property there (sorry no house yet, so no rentals) and I've been trying to figure it out myself. I can tell you I certainly haven't yet, but with all the lake shoreline and structure along the river to explore, it's always new and interesting. Long story short, you may or may not go there and immediately start hammering the pike but you will have fun either way. And as fishbear says if you are open minded towards a variety of species you can have some nice days there.
