I like to palm the reel so I use a shimano curado 300. its pricey but so well designed that you can cast a mile and never worry about a backlash-I love it. not heavy so it won't wear ya out and 5:1 will pull everything well except the biggest of DCGs. thinking about the garcia toro winch 4:1 to complement it. Season Closing LOU Muskie Outing
NitroMusky replied to NitroMusky's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Chad good thought about Chaut...I was contemplating whether to suggest that initially but thatlong a drive round trip makes for a very long day and better suited to an overnight IMHO which could eliminate a few potential folks from partaking. not that I knew it when I initially suggested this but I will be in syr Saturday overnite beforehand, so chaut isn't an option for me- as much as I prefer it. Im certain I or someone else wll have room for ya... [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Well its been a pretty good year of muskie hunting here on the LOU muskie forum No, I didnt put together some LOU slideshow or anything- thats Chad's job! But now that the season comes to a close, lets send it out with a bang (and hopefully a visit from a couple a muskies) by heading out to Waneta for the 'Unofficial, Season Closing, Catch a Muskie, LOU Outing' Weather on Erie this time of year can be tough if not prepared so instead it will be Sunday the 29th on Waneta Lake. 9-4 If we can convince Sol to bring his port-o-grill I'll bring some dawgs but we'll still need a few beers and sand...yes: sand. Once last chance to comiserate (or celebrate) in person before the winter lull. let us know whos coming.... C-ya there- NM Brad

Sqqy, I see you're from syr, so for what its worth... you might want to give Otisco a try. We were thinking of trying seneca yesterday but instead opted to try some tigers. the owner of the otisco marina there said the action has been pretty good lately, and we definitely saw some ourselves. 1 follow, we boated a small one (20 incher ) and had another one bite me off- that one was probably 30 plus by the way it pulled- never got a look tho . silly me for downsizing the line . ran 20lb flouro tied directly to the braid to keep the presentation more natural due to some pretty clear water for that lake. oh well... our action came around the deep weedlines in the N end. x-raps were the favored baits.

Bob sounds like you guys had a good day out there...say, shouldn't you be out on in the harbor for the NMA tourney now??? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

thanks. I had heard there was some good action up there beyond beyond the reaches of New York. this seems to prove it don't show that pic around too much . Between that beast and McNair's last year, people might think the St Larry's makin a comeback. get ready for combat trolling! [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

yikes! that things a Brute...and a beautful one at that! Wow, way to go. Out of curiosity only, what general area were you fishing (near what city)? [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

what are the best reels for trolling?
NitroMusky replied to ncallahan03's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I have the daiwa accudepth plus reels...fantastic reels for the $$. they have aluminum spools (another guy on here had 2 okuma plastic spools blow out on him so its metal all the way for me ). just upgrade the drags and you have a FLAWLESS reel. smooth progression even cinched down good. I put put detailed instructions for swapping them out and a link to buy then on this site a while back. good luck here it is: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9596 good luck NM [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
Anyone hunting toothies this weekend?
NitroMusky replied to NitroMusky's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
update: gave waneta the college try sunday (all trolling) but as Larry pointed out on his site: high pressure flat water shut the fish down or so I told myself ...marked a couple good hooks in the deep hole off the point on the E side and one 15 down over 20 near the 2 shore. tried it alll: fast slow, deep, shortlined, shallow off boards, big baits, little baits...zippo... but nice day to be on the water. saw a few others casting and trolling, riggers and boards. nothing boated that I saw. Sorry Sol, havent seen anything on Conesus in the past few days (or anything on the other good pike waters locally for that matter). might consider seneca though too if its not too windy...good luck NM [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Hey guys, I'm back from my week in London. exhaused but fully sudsed Ready to get back on the hunt now . droppin our daughter off at grandma's early and takin the ole lady to Waneta tomorrow...uuuhh... later today ! she still cant work the rod/reel too well on account of the recent shoulder surgery so mostly trolling, maybe some jigging..we'll assess the lake when we get there. Sol- sounds like some good action this past week on Chaut. poor bulldawg. Consider it the sacrificial lamb for all the fish ya boated this year! as for the end of season outing, lets plan on the harbor Sunday the 29th, for a bigggun. hopefully the wind cooperates. -
good deal everytime I pass over the wide waters near macedon I tell myself I should give it a whirl. thanks for the encouragement. just might have to break out the canoe too...been decades since I paddled the ganargua. come to think of it I haven't used 'arm power' since stepping up to the big leagues.. 'cept for maybe pushing off a shallow bar a few times is there a launch closer to macedon that will accomodate a trailered boat? NM

assuming you have to re-run the full length of wire for each new transducer and checked for cuts etc, (which would eliminate a wire problem), my guess is the 'ducer was (is?) getting sent too much power - not enough to fry it but enough to 'slowly' burn it out. I'm not sure what voltage the head unit steps the power down to for the sonar (if at all) but maybe a bad voltage regulator. either that or a very intermittant internal short in the head unit on the sonar circuit. net net: its the head unit...there is no way that you got 3 bad ''ducers in a row....but on the off chance they are, you need to get a lottery ticket quick! good luck NM

Yeah Zach, survival it was! felt like combat boating: me against nature...and from the pain still this AM in my lower back I think I know who won. Nice job on the deer blessing in disguise for you. Was that the pic you sent me Sat? Phone's seen better days - they don't come through anymore I didn't get the one with Bobs fish sunday either...oops did I say that Im going to try to get back out this weekend if the wife will allow it given that I was just down there and now gone to UK through Friday. Probably waneta sunday if I can go. I think they only lower the water every other year and that was last year so the channel should still be ok. Unless a bunch of folks are already planning to scatter and head to the harbor or chautauqua, We should all think about planning a LOU get together/outing to close out the year. Last day of the season is a Monday so we could do it Sunday the 30th or the day before. Chaut is a bit far for a day trip but waneta or the harbor could be options... well I wish my report was filled with the same excitement that eminated from Chad's, but not to be... hit conesus on thur with Vince from Vince's spinner shop. had a great time- he is first class and his spinners are the same We casted and trolled. marked some bait around the points, and had a rip but alas no fish. rather bizarre day. I have never seen the water there flat as a pancake all day long. looked as pristine at 4 pm as it did at 8 am...never even a ripple on the water. could have used that elusive chop to get thigs going a bit. careful what you wish for, they say...and they are right. from there I trucked down to chaut for 2 days of fishing and what I found on Friday AM was the polar opposite of thursday: massive wind blowing right up the lake . knew I was in for a rough day...made a few passes at casting prendergast but the winds made boat control and good fishing technique next to impossible to do at the same time...so as much as I wanted to stay and fish the weeds I went trolling for a while. marked fish at bemus pt hole but the 3 ft waves building from the S basin tossed me around pretty good so that was out after a couple passes. made my way to pt chaut and into the mayville slot...which wasn't bad - until I tried to head back south and into, instead of with the waves. More 3 and even 4 footers : regularly found their way over the bow or threw it high in the air. about then I began wising for a deeper draft and higher gunwhales no time to clear the weeds- had to really steer every second. after I got out of the heavy stuff I ran the bilge pump for 5 minutes to clear the gallons that had accumulated. Zack - I did wear my pfd for obvious reasons casted (poorly) again around p'gast and called it a day around sundown. went back to the hotel to recuperate from the jarring day and saw the forecast for saturday :( gale force winds again out of the SW so I packed my bags and cut my losses. sounds like things turned around a bit on Sunday for Sol...but will await his full report [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
I enjoy fishing cross/seneca river...lots of different types of water/structure all close by: lake, river, and rocky bottom in the state ditch. I have yet toget a tiger there as well in the few times I've fished it...heard they pretty much all 'escape' into the river... Old man: that would be a long ride at no wake speeds...maybe this will make you consider going there more often: http://www.nyscanals.gov/maps/map4.html speed limit through there is actually 30 except in the state ditch portion. I put in at jacks reef and except for the the 1st 1/2 mile where its a bit shallow, its a quick cruise to the lake...if I don't stop and fish along the way. don't have to go through the state ditch. yep, those are tigers in there. in fact someone from Syr caught the state record for a tiger through the ice this past winter...been there 2x but not a whiff for me [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

GREAT story, well told. you've got me all pumped up for this weekend! I'd better wear my life jacket, 'cause if I saw that monster I'd not only be speechless, my knees would probably buckle and send me over I hope you get another chance at that beast this year...glad you had a good outing. -
great job! go get yourself a tiger and you'll have a really nice 'fall triple play' hope I do as well this weekend as you have been.
