Anyone hunting toothies this weekend?
NitroMusky replied to NitroMusky's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
yeah gotta leave early afternoon on Sat. Stipulation is to be home for trick or treating...lucky me! don't get too worked up by the weather yet...the way the forecast keeps pushing out, by the time weekend rolls around you will probably have the warm dry weather and I will get the cold stuff preceding it LOL...but bring your tent poles and fire poker just in case if im lucky and things stay as forecast I might just catch the tail end of the warm stuff and get the good bite of the start of that front... here's my report: nada, zilch. trailer brakes been sticking off and on and decded I better deal with it before my tranny comes out on the loosing end of that deal. got the week off to finish work on it, so I ripped out the actuator over the weekend...just gotta order the parts today with expedited shipping and Im back in biz by Wed  gonna hopefully hook up with Vince for some tigers Thursday on Conesus and then keep on motoring down to Chaut for couple days. woo hoo! Very generous of you Larry I'd be happy to join him for no reward (fishing is a reward in itself) and show him some of the key areas that *should* be good. But I cant say I've figured the tigers out , and have yet to run across anyone (in person or online) who has successfully targeted them-particularly trolling. Pike is a different story, but for whatever reason it seems to be just right place, right time for a tiger hit on Conesus (maybe a combination of low maturation rates- walleye eating juvies?- and large forage base) ???. I hope someone can prove me wrong and share some good insight

sounds like a great day! I've never targeted perch but I caught a few last year...on muskie baits different lures on different lakes each time and in each case the lures were just as big if not bigger than the fish were... and yes all were hooked in the mouth go figure...stupid fish [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

thanks but I don't think I will be hitting it by myself as a noob...I can just see myself straying and falling into the arms of the RCMP need someone with some experience there to keep my from straying and show me the breaklines and holes. But...I did get my enhanced drivers license last week in anticipation of the event...so my time WILL come! [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
searching for Skees at different temps
NitroMusky posted a topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
came across a good article that give some ideas where the fish (might ) be throughtout the year as the temps change. just hope the fish read the article too... http://www.fishinfo.com/fishing-articles/article_504.shtml for the rest of this year: 47: Fall Trophy Hunting When water temperatures plunge to 47 degrees, muskies are well-entrenched in the fall season. Fish are well-established in transition areas again utilizing vertical structure. They are now in the process of energy conservation and some of the larger females may even experience the beginning stages of egg production. Muskies are feeding and focusing on forage with high fat content, like suckers and ciscoes. Fish will most often be at their peak weight. Trolling these areas is now a primary consideration. Again fish may still respond during warming trends by moving shallow. Fish utilizing shallow structure and remaining vegetation make casting an effective option. 37: Break Out The Parka Fish are now usually found in deep water in their established wintering zones. Once the water temp drops to 39 degrees the upper level of the water column sinks and as the surface of the water column continues to cool, fish will seek the warmer deeper layer. Deep trolling and casting becomes an effective tactic. Muskies will often relocate to areas previously void of fish and may use open water far removed from any defined structure. Trolling areas out and away from structure is an effective tactic during this late fall period. Locating baitfish that have often pulled away from structure is the key to success. -

Check out Capt Larry's comments on his site for a couple reccommended spots...also sounds like a casting bite out there right now which is why I'm going to try to remind myself how to throw a lure again. good luck out there Mark. -
Anyone plying the waters this weekend or is everyone still crunchin leaves with the one-string harp? I for one am going to try to hit waneta Sunday if the weather cooperates...that means no rain...I think any hopes for warm temps are out the picture for the year Im afraid so that doesn't factor in anymore Just a trial run for chautauqua later in the week...will be poundin the weedlines with the casting rod. sounds like the girls are about ready to reemerge from the turnover funk and get the feedbag on. Bob So is the dock confirmed to be out now? I wanted to go there tomorrow but launching solo so I was going to hedge my bet and hit sodus instead. no place to tie off that I know of and Im not going to beach it on the concrete ramp... so Im not sure how I would launch solo with a 'glass boat. how do other people manage this time of year when they're solo, if at all?
-
construction should be almost done now, but I looked at a map and there is a way around the bridge to the east. left defoe the bridge, next three rights to the launch Im sure the detour signs are posted too. [ Post made via Mobile Device ]

Chautauqua Lake Last week
NitroMusky replied to Chautauqua Tony's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
yup thats my plan too...probably thur-sat of halloween week...just gotta make sure I can sneak away- work is BUSY, but I have almost 2 weeks of vaca I have to squeeze in still. clearing with the boss (Not the wife ) when I see him tomorrow. Tony, dont feel bad about this past week. I was going to come down for a day or two, but my "informants" told me turnover was in effect. fish were probably up real shallow and negative, so I bailed. by the end of the month things should pick up again tho. that said, a lot can change in 2 weeks this time of year, so its tough to say what the strategy is. daily weather will play a large part too...sunny likely means very shallow casting EOD on the flats (warmer water). otherwise, i'm pretty much with Bob: trolling, and with BIG baits. most likely gonna find the bait and let the temps dictate my trolling speed. if big fish are marking deep around the holes or on deep breakline, some Fuzzy Duzzit and Dawg jigging's in order too. -

Daiwa Sealine 47LC Reels
NitroMusky replied to emtystringer's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
thanks- you're right...I didn't make that clear regarding the different models. umm no..graphite unfortunately will not work fo muskie...maybe some brands' graphite is more durable than others but pulling baits with a 2-3+ inch lip at over 5 mph (to potentially 10) WILL put excessive strain on the spool...that's before a 30-40 lb fish literally slams the bait to nearly a standstill. another member here had two graphite spools blow up (albiet another brand) but Im not taking that chance when spending that $$. can ruin a good trip, vacation or tournament - which can each cost more than the difference in price between good and mediocre reels... thanks tho... anyone fishing waneta tomorrow?
NitroMusky replied to NitroMusky's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
well I gave it the ole college try...split time casting and trolling. not a whiff casting and only one good rip on the troll while over deep water... but it was off by the time I thumbed the reel I dont feel too bad about the outcome tho...The lake seems to be in turnover- appeared to be some upwelling going on- noticed what looked like some boils on teh surface and the there were also a lot of incosistencies in the temps: like tiny 'cold spots' throughout the lake. could be tough fishing for a couple weeks... -
Daiwa Sealine 47LC Reels
NitroMusky replied to emtystringer's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
I looked at these and he sent me pics...defintiely in great shape, but they are not the same as the SG47LCs that they're selling @ Dicks- this is the Great Lakes model. Would've picked em up myself but for muskie trolling I need the lower 4:1 and a metal spool. pretty bummed they didn't meet my needs as they definitely are a great deal for someone looking for a reel meeting these specs surprized they haven't been snatched up yet -
gonna head out there 'round noonish- let the water warm a bit - then fish till dark and hopefully catch a good break on the fall 'last-light' bite. anyone else going??? figured a couple a ya might be looking for a little redemtption after last weekend might have an open seat too...if interested PM me here. thanks Bob that pic did come out pretty good...looks even better full sized. I changed it just for you...I know you couldn't stand lookin at that scrawny runt of a pike [ Post made via Mobile Device ] -
just look for the cluster of other boats out over deeper water. this time of year the deep hole just south of Pt Chautauqua (Dewittville) is a good spot. hopefully Brian still carries these jigs. get the orange and the chartruse heads- never know whats working. lift and drop...lift and drop...

I say pike. two reasons: 1) look closely at the stripes near the tail of the fish on the right. that one IS a pike and matches the stripes on the fish in question 2) fin color: its dark like that of a pike (again like the other two) rather than a reddish color of a muskie. My guess is that the ligher color on the center fish is just overexposure in the pic from light reflection off the fish slime.

will be out there at some point...if I dont go to chautauqua this weekend. got monday off, so I might wait till then and avoid the crowds...all depends on the weather I guess. be advised, the creek bridge just north of the launch is closed for repair for the next two weeks as of yesterday. not sure if they now have a marked detour, but will probably add a few munutes to the drive. be sure to pay attention on the way down...
