  1. Yes. Very informative. I might add that in the last two perch outings at the Cat I was marking what I thought were eyes but turned out to be big Cats. I landed three of them . One was 25+ lbs. this was in 68’ straight out.
  2. Walleyes are still stacked over piles of smelt off the Cat. Fish were 85-92 for us but I did see boats out further and assume they were doing well. Most fish came on the riggers 63-66 down with harnesses. Also managed a few on wire dipseys set at 2 1/2 out 130-135. We did not bother with the lead line. I did hear of some nice perch catches straight out too.
  3. After a long three week break from Erie, I finally got back out of the Cat today. Like everyone said, they are stacked from 85-95’ i went west to Dunkirk and found school after school of smelt. The eyes were in there eating heavily. Harnesses on riggers set 66-70’, wire dipseys 150’ back setting 2 1/2 and lead out 9 and 10 colors.. Solid wall of fish out there. Get them while you can.
  4. I have fished Keuka for a long time and totally agree with Gambler on what happened. A die off of food for alewifes or a pollution problem with toxic chemicals would take a much slower progressive reduction in the population of salmonids. There was a sudden crash of alewifes on that lake following those two winters. Apparently, they do not do well in very cold winters. Those of you that know me know that I am not a big fan of lake trout but I do care a lot about the overall health of that lake including lakers. Starting in the spring of 2017 something bad was happening. Every perch I caught that May had 4-5 baby perch in their bellies. It was great fishing, but I knew it was going to get bad real soon. In 2018, we still had pretty good perch fishing but they were again loaded with perch fry. The winter ice fishing changed a little earlier than that when as Les stated, we were catching lakers in 20’ off Indian Pines and they also were filled with perch young. I tried a few more times after 2018 for perch in both the east and west branch. It definitely is not what it used to be. The best thing right now for that lake is to reduce the laker population. They will eat everything they can catch but eventually, their numbers will hit a level that the lake can sustain. That is if all those population charts I learned many years ago in grad school are correct. Once that happens, the population of other fish should increase too barring any other unpredictable environmental event. Unfortunately, it will take some time.
  5. Wow! And I couldn’t get out yesterday. You guys have it down.
  6. Nice going! I now have an incentive to salmon fish again!
  7. Just found out only 4 fish caught out of 144 boats were over 8 lbs. they were hard to find for sure.
  8. A buddy of mine recently was in a big tournament in Ohio. He made the trip east and fished in PA. He did have a 35 lb bag on a practice day so there are big fish out there. Granted, a little west of us but I’m guessing the big fish were just not found in the shoot out. It sure isn’t because they have nothing to eat. I took that shot near the PA border Friday.
  9. Good to know. Looks like I better get there even earlier on Friday. There probably will be a bunch of guys pre fishing.
  10. Nice. How deep were you.
  11. Took us until 9:30 yesterday to get our two man limit at Barcelona. Probably because we were 1/6 starting out. Just dumb luck. We stayed shallow and used harnesses and did catch a lot of shorts along with drum. I probably should head out deeper next time. Seems like bigger fish were in 68’. Hottest set ups were riggers at 50’ and wire dipseys set at three out 84 and 100’.
  12. Record time for our two man limit today. One hour of fishing, two hr drive! Crazy out there. Barcelona, 60’.
  13. Interesting info from a local. Thanks. I usually plan on July 1 every year for my first Barcelona trip. From what I am hearing, the big school hasn’t moved much east of the Cat yet. They seem to be staying around NE in PA through Dunkirk. They should spread out soon..
  14. Another quick two person limit out of Barcelona today. It took us less time to limit than to drive there from Rochester. We found some fish in 61’ but most came out in 68’ red barn area. Everything for us today was on harnesses. Dipseys set at #3, 84-102’, lead line at 7 color and riggers down 48’.
  15. Made it to Barcelona Tuesday. Two man limit by late morning. For some reason the wind was pushing 15 mph from the SSW most of the morning but my friends at the Cat said it was flat there. We could only put three rods out trolling west fighting current and wind. Fish were between 45 and 50’. Harnesses and a few stick baits worked best on wire dipsey out 84’ on a 3 setting. lots of undersized walleyes were caught too.
  16. I’ve been away for two weeks just wishing I was on Erie. Plan on hitting Barcelona on Tuesday for the first time this year. I usually don’t hit the Cat until the middle of July . Earlier than that, it seems a little inconsistent for me. I had to laugh about a long ride from GI. Try driving from Rochester and I’m almost as old as Biden! I’ll start reporting next week.
  17. Definitely what happened on Sodus. I think you should try those two fingerlakes ski dooz. They are not quite as big as Lake Ontario Rockies but with a little weeding out, you can have a bunch in the 1 lb class. In addition, you can get some perch in either lake and maybe even a walleye in Skaneateles
  18. I gave up on finding them in big Sodus yrs ago. Just not there like they were. But, I would suggest you try either Keuka or Skaneateles lakes. They are loaded right now
  19. It’s almost impossible to get out on Erie with our weather but when you can, it’s well worth it. Yesterday was a very good day!
  20. Nice mess of perch.
  21. Didn’t realize they were that deep in the St Lawrence. That’s Erie depths!
  22. I have an update for this thread on spot lock/perch. The past two weeks I have been perching on a very clear lake. Visibility down to around 22’ . I wondered if the Minn kota would have any effect on the perch clearly visible under my boat so I watched how they reacted to me turning the Minn kota on and off. Nothing! I was quite surprised. I did this as shallow as 15’ with no effect on the perch. This was not a one day incident. I experimented on 4 separate days even in glass calm conditions with the same results.
  23. Nice report. Your technique of slack line fishing is right on. Early spring perch react like this everywhere I fish for them. Expect them to get more aggressive after the spawn and then begin to actively feed..
  24. I remember a story that Gambler told me about tying a ballon to a perch in a local bay. If I’m not mistaken, the ballooned fish started taking off like crazy. Turns out a pike got it !
  25. It really depends on where you are, the clarity of the water and depth. Less is correct for most of the fingerlakes . I have watched them “ fly away” when someone makes a noise on Seneca or canandaigua. But letting the jig pound the bottom in other lakes , bays and Erie seems to trigger a strike at times.
